Late to the party again...
Late or not, I feel this needs saying, so I'm going to say it... and not aiming in any particular direction other than generally at anyone who deems it necessary to try and blow holes in what we've judged to be an apt test of varied abilities.
I find it slightly ironic that someone from D1 Silver (GT5) thinks they're justified in aiming such an attack, citing the game's physics limitations as good cause for that. This is what we have to work with and, imperfect as it may be, the Renault/Willow Springs combo represents a test of ability just like any other combo. If you choose to 'toss the dummy' because it isn't as much fun as you'd like and you intend your WRS career to consist of weeks in which we're running something that suits your tastes, then that's fair enough. What is not fair enough is openly spouting off about it.
That said, I find it surprising that anyone with that level of skill would not want to rise to the challenge of a difficult combo, no matter what its limitations are. "Under-steer isn't fun" "The game's FF physics are broken" We seem to have a running fashion of moaning about anything and everything that doesn't fit into our own little preference window. Truth be told, I don't like under-steer, I'm not sure the physics are modelled correctly but I'm sure as hell going to give it my best shot and spend probably a good deal of time working through the technique necessary to squeeze everything I can out of it. I hated it when I first tested it in all honesty and was ready to dismiss it as a qualifier combo but, partly inspired by some stubborn impulse not to give up, I ran it again and again until I started to feel a rhythm and, in turn, began to see the value it had in presenting a test of skill quite in opposition to the M3 GT; exactly what we wanted from the qualifier.
In this instance it does seem to be faster guys that are calling the Willow combo out. Why? And don't say its because the physics are wrong.... What do you want from the WRS? To qualify high up in the ether of D1, to run the occasional combo when it suits you, finish in the top 10, then disappear again for weeks, months.... never run again? Great, good for you. No offence but the WRS is not just for you. We have a core of members that run in lower divisions, who nonetheless give it their all week in week out, trying every combo no matter the test of track or drivetrain, testing themselves, learning, adapting, and still having fun without ever complaining or trying to pick holes in the game or in our choice of events. These people are the heart of WRS, not the handful of D1 drivers who sporadically turn up hoping for a podium.
No matter what your skill level, though, each event and particularly the qualifier, should challenge you in some way. Competing in these events is as much a test against yourself as it is against the other competitors so instead of poking holes in it, why don't you take a deep breath and spend the next 3 weeks doing the best job you can with the tools we have and look forward to some good competition when the weekly events begin in earnest.
