Just had my first proper attempt at the BMW, albeit only for about half an hour and after a drink. And although it was a bit tricky at first, it's not too bad once you learn how early you can get onto full power.

Late to the party again...

Late or not, I feel this needs saying, so I'm going to say it... and not aiming in any particular direction other than generally at anyone who deems it necessary to try and blow holes in what we've judged to be an apt test of varied abilities.

I find it slightly ironic that someone from D1 Silver (GT5) thinks they're justified in aiming such an attack, citing the game's physics limitations as good cause for that. This is what we have to work with and, imperfect as it may be, the Renault/Willow Springs combo represents a test of ability just like any other combo. If you choose to 'toss the dummy' because it isn't as much fun as you'd like and you intend your WRS career to consist of weeks in which we're running something that suits your tastes, then that's fair enough. What is not fair enough is openly spouting off about it.

That said, I find it surprising that anyone with that level of skill would not want to rise to the challenge of a difficult combo, no matter what its limitations are. "Under-steer isn't fun" "The game's FF physics are broken" We seem to have a running fashion of moaning about anything and everything that doesn't fit into our own little preference window. Truth be told, I don't like under-steer, I'm not sure the physics are modelled correctly but I'm sure as hell going to give it my best shot and spend probably a good deal of time working through the technique necessary to squeeze everything I can out of it. I hated it when I first tested it in all honesty and was ready to dismiss it as a qualifier combo but, partly inspired by some stubborn impulse not to give up, I ran it again and again until I started to feel a rhythm and, in turn, began to see the value it had in presenting a test of skill quite in opposition to the M3 GT; exactly what we wanted from the qualifier.

In this instance it does seem to be faster guys that are calling the Willow combo out. Why? And don't say its because the physics are wrong.... What do you want from the WRS? To qualify high up in the ether of D1, to run the occasional combo when it suits you, finish in the top 10, then disappear again for weeks, months.... never run again? Great, good for you. No offence but the WRS is not just for you. We have a core of members that run in lower divisions, who nonetheless give it their all week in week out, trying every combo no matter the test of track or drivetrain, testing themselves, learning, adapting, and still having fun without ever complaining or trying to pick holes in the game or in our choice of events. These people are the heart of WRS, not the handful of D1 drivers who sporadically turn up hoping for a podium.

No matter what your skill level, though, each event and particularly the qualifier, should challenge you in some way. Competing in these events is as much a test against yourself as it is against the other competitors so instead of poking holes in it, why don't you take a deep breath and spend the next 3 weeks doing the best job you can with the tools we have and look forward to some good competition when the weekly events begin in earnest.

Did it on my phone Mohit.... edited it after posting ;)
Yes, well said! You'll get out what you put in with these events, and although I wasn't sure about them at first, they are a great test, and very addictive!
The WRS also helped me widen my depth of skills which undoubtedly helped me at GT Academy 👍

Well said 👍.

But maybe try some paragraph breaks? That wall-o'-text hit me like a wrecking ball ;).

Try reading it from a cellphone with a cracked screen.

Hell I can run d1 silver times on some of the combos but I'm far from d1 status. I guess everyone knows their true statue. People like Twissy, Eclipsi, Chris, Andrew and etc prove it week in and week out while some people just want a sig to gloat about and partake in point/shoot grip events. To each their own.

Sorry. I recently found the Tomorrowland setlist and I'm pumped up.

This post was written while dancing.

Edit: Spell fix ... still dancing

Loads of people are going to end up in the wrong divisions because of this Willow nightmare and I'm one of them. Partly because I'm just not interested in driving under these conditions where the feel of the car just has no resemblance to what you could feel on track IRL, and partly because I know my willow lap is so incredibly sub-optimal that (as a consequence) I have little interest in extracting all I can from the BMW; it will do little to salvage the situation and would be extremely time-consuming, let alone futile.

When you expose the shortcomings of a game by putting a car on what are effectively the wrong tyres and induce the "infinite understeer" that this game has been famous for, you are going to get messed up results. It becomes more about gaming the system than about displaying driving skill.

I was Div 1 Silver in GT5, I expect to qualify around Division 3/4 this time.

I'm just going to chuck a couple of times together and submit well below ability because the Willow experience is simply a hurdle to participation in the weekly trials where we can exchange splits and whatnot and where I actually enjoy myself.

:|

So you are another one that's going to take the sandbagging route? 👎 What a crock of 🤬 This is whats going to kill the enjoyment of the WRS for me, having to compete with people that by all rights, should be divisions higher than me. I really hope the admins do something about this.

I liked your whole post, Chris, very well said, but I'm highlighting this part in particular because to me that is the very reason those calls of elitism about the GTP tag didn't make any sense. Sorry to take attention away from your main point, but I just had to say this.

I don't know if we're allowed to discuss this or not, but I've found that the BMW sometimes just over steers for no apparent reason or some of the corner exits, I'm thinking there is some very small bumps or cambers. Also, the car is very easy to over correct of correct to early.

It's not about elitism, it's about pride IMO. Good point!

I think it's the brakes that cause the problem with me. Hit them too hard and the car under-steers.

The rumbles also send it spinning.

And sometimes on exit throttle can cause oversteer if you're too quick on it when the car is not balanced.

But anyways, that's just par for the course, really - get used to it, or find ways to prevent it with inputs and lines.

Ran at Willow quite a bit this morning and found it to be really fun once I got the hang of it. The car really isn't too bad unless you push it too hard. Brake early, and don't mash the throttle on exit and it behaves pretty well.

Also ran at Brands Hatch a bit and found that to be very difficult. Starting to figure out the lines and still getting used to the car.

This qualifier came just in time, my eyes were beginning to glaze over working my way through the game.

For my Country Canada, do I put 'Canada' or 'CAN' ?
Canada, please. Either would work, but making it explicit by typing the full name will prevent any ambiguities.
Only a few obvious ones should be using abbreviations (USA, UK, etc).

But remember, we're not accepting submissions yet. Partly to fully test our receiving process. Partly to force you guys to spend more time on this.

After running the qualifier tonite, I thought I would try the Renault's off road capabilities. Lots of room at Willow to explore the desert.

*snip*

👍 sadly my off-road driving, for the most part, has been unintentional :guilty:

It's a great combo though, very challenging but rewarding when you can tame the understeer!

I am from Romania and I use a UK account because there is no playstation store for this country. When submitting should I put Romania or UK?
thx

That sounds to me like a mission impossible for the admins.
Allso I think you should be carefull about the 'sandbag' stuff.
It wouldn't suprise me if I end up in a lower Div than I used to be.
And if that's the case, the 1 and only reason for it is I allways have to run a million laps on a new track.
Not even mentioning the different physics compared to GT5.
It'll just take much time (for me) to get used to it.

On-topic: propably I'm the only one over here who likes the Renault better than the BMW
It gives more feedback than the Beemer, and his limits are easier to find.
The R1 tires are just mean..they make you feel very comfortable, untill you reach their limits.
The squeel in advance before they leave the tarmac is hilarious ;)
Car is simply way to fast for an old brag like me :dunce:

I've always liked hatchbacks better than race cars!
