The groups for Fuji looks more like an elimination system designed to extract the best teams for the next race, rather than an attempt to get evenly balanced races. As I understand it, it's not until Spa that the groups will actually be balanced?

wow ghostdriver and PASM, awesome q laps !
even if high draft etc. these are very fast laps!
really looking forward to the races.

Explain. Elaborate. Provide examples of what you mean.

The lounges for round 1 were meant to be balanced based on team seed from quali. By balanced it means each lounge is "level" and has a mix of teams. If that's what you mean by elimination then yes.

Round 2 will aggregate the best teams based on points from round 1. That does not necessarily mean the 16 fastest drivers. 1 alien who wins a race could still end up in lowest bracket if his team doesn't do well behind him. So even i you don't win round 1 you could face some fast drivers in round 2.

Guarantee: there will be good races in all lounges. Isn't that what this is really about?

Like any tourney in the history of games and sports, brackets are never even. The top seed always gets the easiest draw... They earned it. But quali is one lap. The 4 seed can upset the 3. Or the 6 upset the 1. It happens.

No word from wge yet so we may be forced to change (slightly) to get a 2nd steward in room 1. Will announce in ~2 hours.

The big winners of the qualifying IMO are Team USA Red and Team GB. Team USA Red jumped from 7th to 3rd and Team GB from 8th to 5th. Well done all 👍

Of course, congratulations to Team UK for winning qualifying and also improving on their initial position!

Thanks Bart. I forgot to congratulate Team UK for their quali in the thread although I did in the lounge. Their quali was a thing of beauty... Not perfection, but it exhibited awesome teamwork and driver skill and planning. 👍 they deserve seed 1.

My team did great in the consistency department and very proud of that achievement. All drivers within a couple tenths. 👍

Bart, i get to race with you. 👍 I'm dreaming of a 0.005 finish. I can dream. :sly:

Cheers guys 👍

We didn't actually get together on track until Thursday, and had a very messy session trying out different strategies. We done some more practice about an hour before our quali run, and finally got the strategy sorted.

As for the actual quali run itself, I couldn't have asked for more! A new PB for me, and I think the same for Ghost. Silver done a great lap too, just unfortunate he couldn't repeat his warm-up time. I'm lucky my first hot-lap was a good one, as I made a mistake at the start of my second lap and pretty much gave up on it, then just wanted to give Ghost the best start to his timed lap as possible. Anyway, it puts us in great shape for both races. A good starting position, good pace, can't wait!

Don't sell yourself short. Your coordination and teamwork was fun to watch, even with one drafting mistake. Proud to be on the same team (though a different color). I'm looking forward to two full grid races today 👍

What I mean is that the system used will serve as an elimination system where the faster teams will eliminate the slower teams.
If you have a big tennis tournament, you don't want the big favourites to eliminate each other in the first round, you want to save them to the finals. So you spread out the favourites between different groups, so that they won't meet until the end of the tournament.

A system for close racing would be to have teams 1-4 in room A, 5-8 in B and 9-11 in C. And as I understand it this is what will happen in round 2, when the new groups are decided from the score of round 1. So round 1 seems to be an elimination round (or qualification round), and round 2 the grand finale.

Yes, exactly. That's the way it was designed.

Being a team event though the "lower" seeded teams will have fast drivers and maybe even a single alien type so there will be good individual racing even if the "team" scoring may pit strong team against weaker in round 1. For example, the top driver in terms of qualifying is on the 9th seeded team. The 4th seeded team has driver ranked 7th and 9th overall. The 6th rank team has a driver ranked 4th.

In round 2 a team of balanced mid pack driver may just end up advancing to the winners bracket. That's what I'm hoping for USA Red who has no driver ranked in the top 10, but 4 in the top 18. So the analogy to other tournaments (NCAA or Tennis) is decent, but not a perfect match for what you'll see here.

Also, if we had more time and more rounds we could do more with the brackets. This event is a celebration of 100 weeks of 3D3Racing and a prototype. Maybe next year we can examine other options... then again, it's a ton of work so maybe not.

Announcement!

Wes is racing 👍 However, he has computer issues and no connection to the google communication system the stewards will use to coordinate between lounges. So we are going with the alternate grid assignments as explained earlier, which effectively just shifts Team Nordic to Room 1 and gives us a 2nd steward in that lounge in MadMax.

In other good news, Mamba is an "almost definite" at this point assuming his connection holds up he'll be driving for Team Oranje. That means Room 3 will have only 3 teams, but a full 12 drivers. 👍

Here are the new grid assignments for round 1:

Round1Grid1a.png
Round1Grid2a.png
Round1Grid3a.png

Please note the lounges/lobbies used for each grid (all mics-disabled):
  1. Grid 1 will race in the main 3d3 lounge. Wes and/or MadMax will host this lounge and post when it's ready
  2. Grid 2 will race in a public lobby to support 16 drivers. Oink, Al and POrsche will set it up and post the room #. You can also follow them to the public lobby via the "yellow dot" next to their private lounge. Or just type in the number they will post when the room is ready.
  3. Grid 3 will race in my private lounge (GTP_WRP001). All drivers on grid 3 were already on my friends list except Small_Fryz to whom I've already sent a FR. This way I can keep the two alternate 3D3 lounges (A & B) with default track Spa and we can use them quickly for round 2.

Please arrive to your designated lounge at least 15 minutes prior to the race (19:45 GMT). We want to launch the round 1 races by 20:10 at the latest and may need to deal with a few connection issues so arrive early and follow instructions. Watch for loading bars and get on track and make sure you see everyone you should. Report any loading or invisible driver issues to a steward via chat.

After round 1 is complete, save the replay, exit the lounge and go change oil. Then watch this thread for round 2 grid assignments. It should only take us about 5 minutes after the last of the grids finish round 1. Proceed to your round 2 lounge as soon as possible after we announce them and proceed again with the connection checks you did in round 1 for loading bars, etc.

The tracks will be open for warm up at Spa for a short period before launching round 2.

Ideal Schedule:
  • Start Race 1 @ 20:05-20:10
  • Start Race 2 @ 21:15
  • Finish @ 22:00
*But we know things never go as planned with GT5 so we'll try to be as prompt and efficient as possible.

We do need your cooperation to stay on schedule. Arrive early. Clear your cache, reset your router, etc. Whatever you need to do normally to minimize your connection issues. Pray for a good day for PSN.

Good luck.

PS> Remember Fuji pit entry/exit rules: Two tires must stay inside pit lane boundaries (white lines), work on your braking point. No diving in and wall banging. No driving on pit road (to avoid draft) unless you are going to pit. On exit, just make sure coast is clear. If there is traffic you must stay on right side of white line. If track is clear you can move over to the racing line. Any incident is on you. Spa entry is not an issue, but be safe on exit just like Fuji and stay to right.

PPS> Report incidents via PM. They will have to be applied after round 2 unfortunately and will entail point penalties unless there is just blatant disregard for other drivers or rules which may lead to immediate DQ. Please drive respectfully and save us a lot of hassle reviewing things. If it's a minor thing, just contact the driver after to work it out via PM.

Well I for one would be happy to assist you guys organise an event like this in the future, and I'm sure others would as well. We all appreciate the effort and time you put into the regular events, let alone how long this must have taken 👍 This 100th event special is your celebration! Keep up the great work

Thanks! If we do this again there will have to be team captains at minimum and maybe even region reps to keep some of the team coordination/driver organization efforts delegated.

I have a quandary today... Do I wear my USA flag shirt or my 3D3 Racing shirt?

💡 Both... I'll change between rounds. :dopey:

Just a note to the administration:

I've been trying to contact Johan (GTP_Littledog) for 2 days, and have'nt heard from him.
I know he was (or still is?) out sailing with his family, so it's likely he's not back in time for the race sadly.
We're still 3 drivers though, but just so you guys know the situation.

I also want to remind everyone to use the correct car number. The number each driver is assigned is listed in the right column in the registration list in the OP.
That number is based on your rank within the GTP_Registry among the drivers who participate.
Should be awesome!!

Good luck out there! 👍 :gtplanet:

Yah Denilson, you are good with just 3. Luckily your lounge is bigger now so losing one isn't the end of the world.

On the other hand, Mamba just updated me, and he's back to not being able to make it. As the world turns.

Nobody else cancel from Lounge #3 please.

A big thank you in advance to the staff for this great event 👍
I'm excited for the races tonight and wish all participants a great race and good luck.
A special thank you to Team Nederland for "adopting" me, it's a honor.

Hey guys, I'm sad to say that I can't make the races tonight... I'm just messin. I'm really looking forward to this.

I'd like to say how grateful we are to have such awesome hosts that make events like this possible. I haven't been in very many events since I joined wrs a few months ago, but out of the ones that I have participated in, this is definitely my favorite because of the team aspect and I hope we can do some more events like this, and maybe with longer races or just make this a series.

Good luck to all today in both races, see you out on track 👍

My lounge (GTP_WRP001) is open for Grid 3 drivers to join. Small_Fryze, you need to accept my FR to join.

Stumbled upon an issue in that first race, had no loading bars seeing cars with lag. But when we entered the pits, on my screen it said Basse was still in the lobby. I did say it in chat, but max had already started the race. Anyway, didn't think much of it until after the race when Basse said I pushed him off after the pitstop. First of all I want to apologise, I wasn't aware of it. I then checked my replay, and from my replay your not even in the race! So something went wrong somewhere, and Im sorry mate.
