GTPlanet ITCC Driver's Meetings (pre- and post-race)

All this talk of changing the rolling start location, what about the grid start?
Not being funny or nothing, but we will look for position there. It's the best point on a circuit such as this. The rolling starts will theoretically be nothing in comparison to the grid. Due to the rules, rolling start will be rare to have 3, but the grid start could easily end up with 4 wide, let alone 3.

The man has a point. Possibly we could move the grid start just past the first chicane and just line up on a sort of mock grid. From that point, speed won't be too high in the roundabout and it's pretty wide anyway. Then a nice long run before the left hander requiring any braking.

It's that or do all starts at original location. The rolling starts will provide pure practice of the chicane. Maybe do a quick 2 lap race in place of the first, where the first is a formation lap to get some practice in on the day. Either way, Monaco is just as tight at the start. We move here, we move there. That just kills the grandeur in my opinion, especially as a season finale.

From a purist's standpoint I agree Damu, but I'm also a pragmatist. I've done all kinds of starts in all kinds of series and those that make some adjustments to start procedure for the sake of a clean start, generally are much smoother in the first lap than those that do not and stick to a formula, regardless of the potential hazards on a given track.

Just checked my previous post. Of course, I meant 2 laps in the pre-qualifying sprint. Just wondering about other starts. Most are relatively clean, although a 3rd one I'm not sure about is Indy. The way the track narrows funnels the cars like the French at Agincourt. I'm sure most of us know how that ended for them.

Did anyone actually read my post? :scared:

Yes. I just want to clarify that if we're prepared to grid start at the boxes, then rolling starts should be feasible due to less people being side by side. Heavy braking will happen in both forms, but in my opinion the grid start will be more dangerous as more people will get side by side.

Alright. Well, I think we'll give the normal starts a go first. If it doesn't work, I'll red flag the race and we'll restart after the chicane, using the crosswalk and the Puerta de Alcalá hairpin.

How do you decide what's a red flag and what isn't?

So if you're saying that all one has to do is pull over and type the words "abort" or something similar, you might want to put that at the beginning of this thread for the official start procedure. There will be no way to police this either as there will be no replay so basically anyone that gets a bad but legal start can just yell abort and we start over. If I had a vote, and I know I don't, I'd rather not waste the time with that kind of start and just go to the safe plan right away, in all the races.

Also keep in mind that the grid order will then be messed up and we have to line up manually.

This is why I reckon we should use a quick 2 lap race on the night, before qualifying. fact is that the first corner incident can happen on any lap, as can the hairpin. This really is into the deep end. Monaco seems easier & Indy easier still (remember there's an inside barrier to help cause collisions). Maybe making sure there's a gap between each row could help?

I'll open a room tonight if anyone want to practice and run some quick races. I need to break my car in more. Sometime between 6 & 7pm PST USA.

Pacific time... I think that that's about 8 hours behind GMT-0, and 3 hours behind GMT-5. So, that's between 9 and 10 P.M. GMT-5.

I might be able to make it. I'll shower and then go get my pita...:sly:

I can make it as well. I need as much practice with the g27 as I can. I will probably use the ds3 unless I magically become much more consistent with the g27

hmm, last minute thought. However, I've noticed the rolling starts can be stupendously close together, why not have a minimum distance limit, even just here? For example, when we stop on formation lap, we could get each row to go at 1-2 seconds intervals at speed limit. Hence, the field spreads out to alleviate the first turn build up.

1-2 seconds per row = 8-16 seconds in a full grid. Do you want to start 16 seconds behind in a race where the field might only be 1.5 seconds apart from front to back?...lol...I don't.

I'd rather start with the field bunched up exiting the chicane or in single file. I've done both and both work extremely well. If we're committed to using the start/finish line then we'll just have to put up with the potential calamity and make the best of it.

I am for putting up with the calamity and just racing.

Cnd, remember that hitting the clutch pedal doesn't slow the car down. Use only the right foot... Well, that's what I do @ autocross. Right foot-brakes/throttle, left foot-clutch.

I gave up on the clutch. Paddle shifters all the way now. I ran a 1.29.48 earlier today with the paddle shifters.

Nice! But, even if you have to keep the left foot on the clutch you're not using, it's better than your turn 1 oops moment.

Trust me I rest my left foot on the brake now. I decided to use both feet. My lap time is faster with both feet. I have gotten used to the g27 now. I had to reconfigure my suspension geometry, but I have figured it out.

Nice! What's your wheel setup like? Is it firmly attached to the old kitchen table, because your family replaced it? ( I miss my Xbox 360 wheel. But, as with everything Microsoft, it broke.)

Yup I have it strategically positioned so that the wheel is right where the wheel is on the in-car camera in gt5 from my line of sight. The gear shift is placed to the right of the wheel because irl in the U.S of A the shifter is on the right of the driver

Surprising... Considering where I'm from, I would've had no idea!

But, shifting and such is good fun, until you try it on an autocross circuit, and realize that you're slightly off line for a chicane, because you focused on the shift. The fact that I avoided those cones... miracle.

I hit the wrong gear sometimes too. The H-pattern is sooooooo narrow. It is a challenge to shift on heavy braking as well. I right foot brake when I drive the clutch. I would like to heel-toe it, but my size 12 feet are just too big not to mention the resistance on the brake pedal compared to the clutch pedal.

You'll get used to it... I did!

For my civic, as it's a stick, I use the h pattern in semi auto mode (no clutch) for me, it gives me the feeling of driving a stick, but it's quicker! Paddles are fun, but takes away from realism sometimes.

I have my wheel on a tv tray :D wheel in the middle, and shifter squished in on the side! And pedals on the floor (if it wasn't apparent enough...) it works for me!

Sweet :) If I am going to use gears then I will use the clutch. I either want it as realistic as possible or just use the paddle shifters.
