Really having trouble getting behind the look of those wheels.

I've been seriously considering buying my first scale model recently. Does anyone know the quality of Auto-art models? The one in particular I'm looking at is the Lotus Exige S, which is about 250$ AUD, and I don't want to spend that much money on a model unless it is a pretty damn good quality model.

AUTOart makes great models, though the Exige S is really only worth around $100-ish USD. It is one of their ABS plastic models rather than their usual diecast.

@Chameleon, Those clear window boxes AutoART goes for are a pain in the two necks because while it's a display window, it also has to suffer shelf wear, has the chance of scratching from handling, and taking out the model can be a bit flustering with the plastic frame snagging on something. So if you're stingy about keeping things in a presentable condition, you could try some other brands first. Minichamps, Spark, TSM, CMC, GT Spirit, UT, (older) AutoART use more if not all cardboard as the packaging so you can breath easier when handling these boxes.

As for quality, they're consistently on the high bar in quality control and level of detail, but not top tier in detail like Exoto or CMC.

I'd wait for the value of the Exige S to go down. I'm positive some current owner is going to let go of that within the next year.

I'm relatively new to the game and have exposed myself to more than a handful of models and brands already. Feel free to ask any other newb questions, as I probably have asked and answered those questions before.

Thanks mate! I'm not overly fussed about keeping it in perfect condition, obviously id like to keep it protected but I'm not about to loose it over a tiny scratch or anything. I would be pretty happy with a "high bar" quality level too, so they sound pretty suitable for me :).

Should I be worried about waiting for the price to drop? Because i've seen a lot of the models be sold out. Do they restock often?

MSZ
I paid $117 for my Exige S, like Venom said it is one of AA's plastic releases(most of their models since mid-2015 have been plastic). So yea don't overpay for one, especially at 250 OZ dollars.

Here are some pics of my model:

Well i looked into it a little further and its now 170$, so thats a little better. Slightly disappointed its a plastic model though. Oh well.

The real car isn't metal, so for an Exige, plastic makes sense. I'm concerned that they're not using metal for other cars, however.

The ABS composite that Autoart uses is pretty nice. While they could be charging less due to material cost (or in general because of silly price increases), the material gets sharp edges better than some diecast models. And there's no need to concern yourself over the material breakdown diecast is known to have (paint rash, zinc cancer).

Impulse purchases can lead to regret (when you learn of accessible lower prices in the future). Some brush that off with excuses. Some learn from their mistakes. Do what you want.

I like to think AutoArt models tend to sell quick due to fanbase hype. They don't seem to announce how many they produce so it's not baiting people on "limited edition" labels. As for restocking, I have no clue where you are shopping, and even if I did, I wouldn't have an answer to that. All I can say is, keep tabs on it somewhere, take note of how low it has sold for, and decide how much you are willing to pay (after knowing the selling prices) to secure one.

A local store I have is selling the yellow Exige for 155 CAD, roughly 162 AUD.

Ignition's got 3 new colours on that LB Kenmeri:

Just like the LB Hakosuka, there's a love/hate thing about the overall appearance.

@AMG Been wanting to ask if there is a reason why you leave in that bump on the backdrop floor directly in front of the model?

I speak of the part of the floor that is raised enough that the car's shadow appears to be cut off.

I know what you mean :) - its caused by 'curling up' paper :(.

I'm experimenting with hanging off weights to 'flatten' it with mixed results. I have plans to get myself a proper photography table to negate this paper behaviour but shortage of space to have it permanently available makes this a medium plan project. Such a table uses up approx 1.8 x 2.5 metres.

Ah. I get this with my 1/64s, but when I shoot the big cars I'm using a ping pong table surface and an extremely flexible and elastic fabric.

I don't really like the GT Spirit 993 Turbo I got recently so I am going to replace it with something else, probably just the alternate color version of the same model, since I have too many silver models. I am totally not trying to sell this here, but PM if would just love to have a 1/18 scale model 993 Turbo. :P

Edit: Sold and replaced with the grey/ red interior GT Spirit 993 Turbo! Maybe... the seller is being real sketchy.

Oh snaparoonies. It's time for the Shizuoka Hobby Show 2016. I was hoping for another round of exclusive 1/64 Kyoshos, but I've seen nothing yet.

I did however get some photos popping up in my feed:

As expected from one of Japan's premier scale model events; there's about a quadrillion things to gaze upon and drool all over;

  • I don't know much about One Model, but if they have a FD2 Civic Type R scale model in their ranks, I'm sold. Looks great,
  • Is it wrong to admit that I mistook that Top Speed NSX picture as belonging to TSM Models? The names and bases look quite similar... Either way, the NSXes are great too, and they cover many different sizes, so if you want a larger-than-life modern NSX scale model, Top Speed's got you covered,
  • TSM has one of my favorite lineups; it's good to see the 1/43 2017 Ford GT casting coming along nicely, especially now that TSM has included a striped concept version (because the concept has the best striping as everyone should know). If they have a yellow/black stripes version, have all my money. Also, regarding that amazing IMSA RX-7... Isn't that a Bonneville drag car next to the IMSA's 1/43 version? And Honda S660s above said drag car?
  • While the Devil Z looks like a million bucks (and probably will cost the exact same), I am more interested in that black AUTOart Mazda Cosmo coupe... Looks positively lovely.
