Waxmage on Instagram show off some amazing records they create. They're so good they actually sell blanks so people can use them as art.

It's amazing what they can do with different coloured vinyl pellets when feeding them into the press. đź‘Ť

My latest vinyl purchase, Radiohead's new album A Moon Shaped Pool (not my image since the special editions won't get shipped until September):

As for the album itself, I clicked with it far faster than I did with their last, The King of Limbs. I eventually grew to love that album, especially after seeing it performed live, but this new album is already above that. Jonny's soundtrack experience is definitely on show here with some beautiful string arrangements and it seems more like 'his' album than Thom's, which is The King of Limbs and its frenetic, rhythm heavy songs. Sonically it pulls on sounds from all their albums from OK Computer onwards, some of Colin's bass lines remind me of OKC, the space folky songs on the new album remind me of Hail to the Thief, there's some Kid A/Amnesiac electronica, and there countless other bits that sound a little like In Rainbows and The King of Limbs. That's not to say this album is derivative of their own work though, it still sounds like its own thing and it's very cohesive in a way Hail to the Thief and The King of Limbs aren't. There's a real sense of this album tracing an arc of the very best of Radiohead and I can't really say a bad thing about it. It feels like a warm hug from a friend I've grown up with, and really, that's what I've done with Radiohead.

BBC 6 Music did a listening party for it if you still haven't listened to it, @Sprite

Now, I'm off to hunt down a copy of the In Rainbows Disc Box to complete my 'awesome Radiohead box sets' collection.

@F1GTR thanks for the mini review. I have to be honest and say I don't have much in the way of Radioheads back catalogue.

They're not a band I ever got hooked on. I like thier music and they have some interesting things to say but beyond "Fade Out" which was on a Q magazine CD a long time ago I've only listened to "The Bends" & "Kid A" a few times.

This weekend I'll give the new album a listen via the link you supplied. If it's to my taste or I feel the need to own it then I might pick up a copy on release.

I recommend In Rainbows as a good starting point for RH, also since you like FlyLo, The King of Limbs is worth a listen. To be honest I sorta liked OK Computer when I first listened to them but it wasn't until I listened to In Rainbows that I became a proper fan and went through their entire back catalogue. The latest is their most richly produced/layered album too, so many nuances compared to their earlier work.

Just putting this out there just in case. If anyone ever happens to come across this in there digging I will pay a hefty sum for this. And if there is anything anyone here is chasing and would like an extra set of eyes let me know as i dig and go on hunts on a regular basis.

There were only 1,000 of these sets pressed and are very pricey to own. Hoping to find it one day in the wild, but not many made there way over to the US as these were UK pressings.

Picked up a few used records for the collection.

Jon & Vangelis - The Friends Of Mr Cairo (promo copy)

image.jpeg

The promo version has this embossed outer sleeve. Inside the inner sleeve and record are the same as the standard version.

Herbie Hancock Lite Me Up

image.jpeg

This is a great soul / funk record. If you like this kind of music it's worth picking up. Some interesting use of de-tune on the vocals, Daft Punk sound similar to this.

Sifted through my 7" singles today. I'd forgotten how fun they can be. Here are some highlights.

The Dickies - Banana Splits

image.jpeg

Here are a couple from a local guy. Bill Nelson. My mum once bought him a pint at a gig, she had a slight obsession.

image.jpeg

image.jpeg

Whitesnake - Still Of The Night

image.jpeg

Iron Maiden - The Evil That Men Do

This single got played so much when I was young. I half expected it to be warn to the point of no return. Despite the marks and young me fingerprints, it played fine.

image.jpeg

Yea that's "God Gave Rock n Roll too you" by Kiss.

This FYC (Fine Young Cannibels) was the first music I bought myself at age six.

image.jpeg

This was one of the boxes I looked through. Added about 150ish singles to my discogs collection. :)

Did a little more digging through the other LPs in the back bedroom and found some nice things.

image.jpeg

Couple of New Wave / Punk albums

image.jpeg

Rush - multiple albums. All originals and the records are perfect, just ware on the sleeves. There were also some others but didn't get photos of these.

Also some new purchases came in...

Mark Pritchard - Under The Sun 2LP
image.jpeg

Wicked City - Score on Green Splatter vinyl
image.jpeg

And this little beauty.

Mondo - Monster Squad 7" on Green / Clear Splatter with Gillman cover variant (UK Only)

Came home to this today.

Son De Mar by Piano Magic

It's such a fantastic soundtrack. Well worth a listen. This is release by 4AD and Norman Records which some of you may know is a local store to me. It's limited to 500 world wide and is a one off pressing.

Here is my newest gem: Roboterwerke by Supersempfft! A little background about this oddball record from 1979: Franz KnĂĽttel wasn't as good with the drums as with the soldering iron and so he built a programmable drum machine that he named Roboterwerke. Notable customers were Klaus Doldinger, Tangerine Dream amongst others. Together with former schoolmates Dieter Kolb and Franz AumĂĽller they teamed up to promote the machine and first and foremost freak out and have fun in the process. The result was a unusual electronic concept album built around the musician frog Sempfft turned into a superhero, and a georgeous gatefold cover in comic style drawn by AumĂĽller:

Had this turn up on Saturday. Survived a journey from Australia to the UK!

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard's Nonagon Infinity, 9 songs that play on an infinite loop. (Not quite on vinyl obviously)

This is the Emu Egg limited edition version, only 1500 copies worldwide! Came with an A1 poster too which meant reorganising quite a big chunk of my music themed wall. Highly recommend giving this a listen.

So I remember posting a few months ago in the "show off your latest purchase" thread that I made a very silly impulse purchase of Garden of Delete by Oneohtrix Point Never, making the realisation that this was the beginning of a very costly obsession.

And so far, this is my fairly small collection:

IMG_20160523_110948.jpg

From top left to bottom right:
  • My most recent purchase, "No Now" by Clarence Clarity on gold vinyl. Looks great, sounds amazing.
  • My first Record Store Day pick up, "Songs By Others" by Ezra Furman. It's just covers, but they're pretty good and I've got a real soft spot for the acoustic cover of "I Can Change" by LCD Soundsystem. It's also on clear vinyl as well, which always helps.
  • The second RSD record, a 12-inch single of "(We Don't Need That) Fascist Groove Thang" by Heaven 17. Got a link to the band and I also love the single too... so yeah.
  • "Music For You: Volume 3" by the Shirland Miners Welfare Band. My dad gave me this one, I can't really explain it and I dare not play it.
  • "The Man Machine" by Kraftwerk. Self explanatory, really. Tried to get an original-ish copy as well.
  • The first one I bought, "Garden Of Delete" by Oneohtrix Point Never. The music is great, but the packaging is fantastic as well. I'll probably put it on Instagram later...
  • The third RSD record, a single of "Rage Hard" by Frankie Goes To Hollywood. It's a good song, but I'll be honest - I bought it just for the pink vinyl.
  • "Meliora" by Ghost. It's just a really, really good record. Easily one of my favourites from last year.
  • "Morning / Evening" by Four Tet. Two 20 minute long singles and they're both great. Really relaxing too
And I've got a fair few 7" to sort through as well:

IMAG0137.jpg

The ones on the front are a RSD copy of "This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)" by Talking Heads with a boring cover on the B side and "The Wheel" by PJ Harvey. You can't really see with my awful photography, but on the B side, there's an etching of the cover of Harvey's newest album. Looks great in person.

The ones to the side and in the crate were all bought for ÂŁ5 from a charity shop. I'm currently sifting through them looking for any good stuff, and currently I've found some Beatles, T. Rex, Roxy Music and Rolling Stones, among some stupid stuff like Frank Ifield (the yodelling guy) and a personalised birthday record for a Richard. It's probably the worst thing I've ever heard.

Still keeping it, though.

And I also forgot to take a picture of my final purchase from RSD, which was a 10" of GoGo Penguin playing some of their latest album at Abbey Road. It sounds great and it also lets me say that I have a jazz record in my collection.

*puts on black turtleneck and thin rimmed glasses*

Picked up some original and in pretty great shape Miles Davis (seeing as it would have been his 90th birthday today)

I also picked up Thrust by Herbie Hancock. Nice to have a little soul, Jazz, funk, fusion going on every now and then.

I've put off getting any records because we don't have a working record player at the moment. I'm thinking of saying screw it and splurging on a few interesting ones.

Any advice on caring for them?

Great song. Definitely on my wantlist. I'm jealous of some of those others too.

Keep them dust free, clean them every once in a while (you can find specific products to do this online) and keep your record needle clean too (again, products online).

Try not to handle the grooved part of the records with your hand (avoids buildup of dirts and oils from fingers or scratching from nails).

Keep in a cool, dry area to prevent long term damage (warping) to your records.

When you're not using them, keep them in a paper sleeve as opposed to the plastic ones you can buy.

Erm, I'm sure I'm missing a lot here but they're the basics which I've picked up đź‘Ť

Nice to see some appreciation for Sheffield's finest! Who needs The Human League, eh? :P I'm sure you'll be able to find a copy on Discogs for a decent price, even if most of the copies are from the UK and Italy (?).

Anyway, I had a slightly longer lunch break than usual on Tuesday and this is what came out of it:

IMG_20160527_213206.jpg

"The Things We Do To Find People Who Feel Like Us" by Beach Slang. A really fun and loud record, even if one of the tracks is just 5 minutes of guitar reverb. It's also a gatefold but not a double LP, there's a massive lyric booklet instead...

IMG_20160527_213409.jpg

I was also 30 seconds away from getting an original copy of Trans Europe Express by Kraftwerk on eBay. I was cheated out of it by my college's slow internet. That's going to take a while to get over...

Of all their songs I think Temptation is first on my list. Coolest use of Shepard tones I've heard in music. đź‘Ť

My discogs wantlist is a mish-mash at the moment. I use discogs mainly for pinning down the dates of more obscure songs, but every once in a while I'll also add something. So right now I have ten or so disks ranging from David Bowie to Celia Cruz to the Hi-Fi Bros to The Fifth Dimension.

Eventually I should probably go through and add every song and album I'm interested in, but I imagine I'd start having trouble prioritizing my purchases.

Any advice on caring for them?

I personally take my records from the outer sleeves to stop ring ware. I put the records in to Mobile Fidelity inner sleeves. These are anti-static, lint free & don't have an abrasive surface against the record.

I then put the record and outer sleeve into a Blake outer cover. These allow easy access but stop dust from getting to the record as they seal up, plus the spine of the record is very visible so when on a shelf I can easily see (unless worn off like on some used records) which record I want.

As said above don't touch the playing sides even in the run-in or run-off as you'll then get grease dragged into the grooves and around your needle. Once the record is on the platter I turn it on and lightly run an anti-static brush around once (I do it multiple times if the record is new and even a few more times if second hand) brushing away the dust with the brush cover every time.

I clean my needle with a Magic Eraser (the white sponge you can pick up from stores) I cut a small bit off and have it with the turntable. At the beginning and end of each session in place the sponge on my platter and using the lowering mechanism on the tonearm I drop the needle on to the sponge. I do this around 2 to 3 times. When it's dropping or touching the needle I never move the platter or sponge as this could damage the needle.

This keeps it clean from gunk. If I'm playing dirty second hand records I clean the needle between plays and sides as you'll drag crud from deep in the grooves.

Any more advice or info let me know.

I just wanted to show an update to the vinyl collection.

image.jpeg

The four across the middle and the two at the end bottom are full. I just need to get more Blake sleeves and MoFi inners then onto organising them.

Two albums arrived yesterday from Denmark.

Code Elektro is a Synthwave producer with hints to Vangelis, John Carpenter and others.

Edit...

Well I decided to go to town and picked up some more used records. 3 jazz and 3 prog rock.

The jazz were all Thelonious Monk.

The prog was all Marillion one of my favourite bands.

I also picked up an order for my fiancée.

Adam & The Ants - Kings Of The Wild Frontier box set. It comes with some CDs and a DVD of raraties and outtakes etc. The album comes on a nice Gold LP and sounds fantastic.

Hello all, some of you may have seen my post in the show off your latest purchase thread.

Anyway quick question, in that post when I mention I found an couple of boxes of my old albums I mean pretty old with them not seeing the light of day for about 20 years at best. So onto the question, some of them are in dubious condition. Dust wise is no problem as I have a brush to clean them but some of them have god knows what on them.
Now I intend on heading into my local record shop on Tuesday as that's the next time he's open to discuss some cleaner but in the meantime I'd like to play a few of the dirty albums.
Does anyone know of a homebrew concoction I can mix up to wipe them down with to get me out of trouble or is it just not worth the hassle and wait until Tuesday?

Thanks, Shaun.

You can make your own cleaner rather easily.
