The width of the page is determined by pixel count, but high-pixel-density displays ("HiDPI" or "Retina" Apple devices) actually render pages at a width determined by their pixel density. The Samsung Galaxy S4, for example, has a 1920x1080 pixel screen, but it will render a responsive web page at 640x360 pixels (in landscape mode).

If you're not technologically-inclined person or a web designer and that doesn't make sense, don't worry. It will "just work" and the new site should look great on your mobile device. 👍

I am no web designer, I do know some things about technology, probably more than your "average Joe", but nothing super extra. And the post made sense to me, I'd ask some more stuff but I'll just wait for the site, plus it would take the thread off-topic too... 👍

That is great news, very much looking forward to the new site, to bad we have to wait 2 weeks and 1 day for it. :(

Can we get pictures straight from our USB to the new Modern thingy with the new software?

Yes, you'll be able to drag-and-drop files directly from a USB drive into your post.

Do you need any pre-launch testers, Jordan? :dopey: :D
No plans for any beta testing. Thanks, though. :P

Will GTPlanet be offline for the mandatory update?
Yes, the forums will be closed for a few hours during the update. I'll provide further details when the transition date is announced.

Looking in that link you mention you kept the tradition of keeping the rotating images at the top. Have you selected some new ones for GTP XII?

I want to know that too. :sly:

Anyways, awesome news, Jordan, can't wait for the new forum software!

There's no more rotating pictures in the header on the new site.

Even on my linux box?
Yep, drag-and-drop file uploads are supported by any modern HTML5 browser. If your browser doesn't support drag-and-drop, you can still attach multiple files using regular file selection methods.

I have uploaded hundreds of images in the past. Kind of a shame it's all going to be undone, yet I've moved past that a while ago too. If profile pages can continue to be customized, I'll be down to make a new one.

Jordan, I asked about images before, but not this. The Facebook app and mobile browser version can upload multiple images (to our own wall) from our iOS Camera Roll by using a "check mark" for those images. Will the GTP have a similar feature?

I don't know if I'm really slow to pick up on things, or just stupid... I'm only noticing this thread now. Can't wait to see the changes, Jordan. Sounds like this year the changes are going to be bigger and better than before. 👍

Pretty sure the site and everything associated with it will scale to whatever device's browser you will be using. There will no longer be a GTPlanet App, for any phone OS. If I'm reading what Jordan and others have posted correctly anyway.

It will use Safari's basic file upload selection mechanism. Safari doesn't currently support (not in iOS 6, I haven't checked this in iOS 7 yet) multiple image selection like the Facebook app. After selecting one image to upload, however, you can quickly choose another file to attach.

I am very sorry for the inconvenience, but I hope you'll find it's for the better in the long run. On the subject of profile customization, that will no longer be supported by the new software.

Please for the love of god, include Windows Phone.
Windows Phone will be fully supported, along with all other modern mobile smartphone operating systems with web browsers.

Jordan, I appreciate the work you are doing to improve the site and community, as well as reaching out to the community. You are obviously putting a huge amount of time and energy on this and I would like to say thank you in advance.

-Dan.

Are you going to allow larger avatars for both Regular and Premium users? Say, 130 x 130 for regular and 150 x 150 for premium. I think most people's internet can support larger avatars now.

He's already answered that.

It will be an all-new forum software platform, hence the lengthy development time. Avatar limits will remain the same.

Personally, I think 120x120 is good enough, it's noticeable without being too large.

I'm cool with my Avatar. Been Mr May for over a year now. Sorta took on the persona....

I suppose it's fine, I just never got why most sites are still at 100x100 to this day. When my forum goes live in a few days the limit will be 150X150 for all users, since I'm not going to offer a paid subscription right away and it would interfere with my carefully crafted ranking system anyway.

Thanks for the kind words, Dan. :)
I'm curious what forum software you're switching to. Invision Power Board?
It will be a white-label version of another community software platform. I'm not going to comment on the software's name just yet, but it's not Invision Power Board.

It's an issue of aesthetics and usability; avatars should not overpower the posts they are next to. Of course, that's my view, but everyone's tastes are different.

I suppose it has a lot to do with how wide the strip to the left of the messages is. On some forum software, apparently including IPB (which is what I'll be running), 150x150 (though not much more) can be displayed without widening that strip (at least not significantly). On GTP's current platform, I doubt it. I haven't seen the new one so I obviously can't comment on that.

^^This. I agree completely.

I doubt I will have any trouble with my avatar regardless of what the new software allows. ;)

I really hope it's not Lithium.

I'll put my money down on phpBB or Proboards. By the way, seeing as we're going to a new software, will current thread URL's stay the same?
