Episode 4 - daan

Our 4th guest for Start in a Reasonably Priced car is another one of our Super mods as well as one of our very important contributors in the slow beginning of this program, please welcome daan!

What brought you here to GTP? How long have you been a member?

I joined way back in the GT3 days of 2002. I had been playing GT since GT but wasn't really aware that there were online communities until I found GT3Times. I had went online and was looking for times to compare myself with and found there. It was through folk there that I found GTP, so I joined here too as it looked a fun place and you could talk about just about anything in the various forums.

How has GT5 been for you?
It's been great. Best GT yet in terms of car handling, graphics, sound & car slection, but lack of different races is an issue. GT5 has been the only game my PS3 has played since it came out.

What has been your favourite vehicle to drive at the moment?
The car I've driven most has probably been my own RX8. I haven't modified it at all apart from the sports tyres it's currently got. My 2nd most driven car is my racing modified 1970 Dodge Challenger in Plum Crazy. I loved driving it round Cote d'Azur terrorising a Ferrari 330 P4!

How about tracks? anyone particular favorites you have?
Nordschliefe and Suzuka are my favourite tracks in GT5. My favourites from previous games were SSR5 Reverse and Tokyo Reverse. They're still in GT5, but I haven't really driven them much yet as the game doesn't seem to use reverse tracks very often.

I had thought Cape Ring was going to be a great track when I saw the map, but it's a bit of a dissappointment. It's still a decent track though.

Have you played around with photomode at all? If so, how do you like it?
Not really. I have taken some photos for my profile pic and for my PS3 desktop, but haven't really gone any deeper.

What is your favourite GT game and why?
It's a toss up between GT5 and GT3. GT5 has the graphics, sound, handling and car selection, but GT3 still has the greatest series in GT history. The PD cup was epic! 20 laps of reverse tracks in unmodified street cars and the only thing you could change was the tyres. I did that series constantly, numerous different cars, and absolutely loved it. I posted a race report of one of my attempts. Ironically PD have killed the PD cup in later games. In GT4 and 5 it's not even a shadow of it's former self as it's just another boring series.

Any other video games do you enjoy playing?
I used to play a lot of Championship Manager then Football manager, but I got out of them as they were taking up too much of my life, and I eventually realised that I wasn't very good at them... The other games I play these days, apart from GT, are the ones on my PSP. Angry Birds is currently the most played game on my PSP. Others are Peggle & Bejeweled. My PC gaming has pretty much been knocked on the head by GT5, but I used to play GTR2/Evo on that. My PC is getting a bit old, so I can't really play it with the graphics as I'd like, so GT5 is my sole driving game at the minute.

Switching to real life, what do you drive? Is it in the game and if so, how does in compare?
I drive a Mazda RX8. It has been represented very well in game, although it did take me a while to find a Nordic Green paint chip (Thanks Neal for that), and the fuel consupmtion is better in game than it is in real life!

Whats your favorite car and what is it about it that you like so much?
McLaren F1. I love the design philophy of it. Everything that is on it, is essentially there to make the car go faster.

Whats your other hobbies?
When I'm not at work, or on a computer, which isn't very often, I like reading and listening to music. I read a lot of biographies of motorsport folk and like reading about historic cars & races. My music tastes tend towards the metal side of things, Iron Maiden, Scorpions, Helloween, Stratovarious, Nightwish etc.

Anything else you'd like to say?
GTP is a great place and it has been such a huge part of my life. I count many of you amongst my real friends, and I've even got a photo of 5 GTP members that attended my wedding last year.

Cheers GTP

And on those cheers, lets have a look at your lap,

And you've done it in One...Thirty....point...Zero Nine Seven, which puts you 2nd on the leaderboard, congratulations

And only 0.023 off of first place! Can I get a mildly moist? I'm sure the track was a bit damp...

:dopey:

Another cracking interview 👍

If only tyre wear was on and it was the last of a 10 lap stint that counted, you'd have won it by a mile...very smooth driving as usual.

Well done, daan!

You wheel users and your abnormally quick times. :grumpy:

And if daan gets a mildly moist, I want a hot. :D

Is there any way we can transfer the first posts to RACECAR? I really appreciate him stepping up and carrying this on! It's everything I had envisioned!

Already been done, friend :)

Also, I've got a even better setup for recording videos coming along so very soon, every video will be exclusively in HD.

This thread is the sole reason I joined this forum. The idea is genius (but Top Gear is too, so...), and I hope to get to try someday. Also, I did the race myself for fun, and the times up there are pretty decent ;D

I swear RACECAR, you should start dubbing it too. :) It would add to the "top gear" effect.
It kind of seems "empty" with nobody talking....
Good Lap anyway Daan.

Another great interview and another revealing inside into one of the forums great insite into one of the forums most known member.

Episode 5 - Joey D

Our fifth guest for Star in a reasonably priced car is non-other then the Visionary and original creator behind this series. Please give a round of applause, for Joey D!

What brought you here to GTP? How long have you been a member?

I saw an article/blurb in Sport Compact Car years and years ago. It looked like there was an online GT3 tuner or something but that wasn't here. I ended up staying though. Been a member for 8 years, going on 9 in April.

Seems useless to ask given your comments but (in the interest of science of course :P), How has GT5 been for you?

I have mix feeling about GT5, it just didn't grab a hold of me like previous GT games which is disappointing. I don't know why GT5 didn't do it for me, it had better physics, sound, graphics, car selection, there's an online mode, and a course creator. It just seems like it's missing an element of fun, it feels like I have to work at the game and after working 10-11 hours a day to coming home to work in a virtual world just doesn't do it for me.

The lack of premium cars kind hurt my love too, the premium cars are some of the best game models I've ever seen. I understand why they didn't make all 1,000 cars premium but their choices on which ones did make the cut seem kind of weird to me.

I do hope with patches and DLC my love is re-kindled or at least heated up in the microwave slightly.

What has been your favourite vehicle to drive at the moment?

When I do fire up GT it's almost always hot lapping in the BMW Z4 M Coupe, lighted modded, in a dark gold/brown colour with black rims. It eats up the corners and can get a little sideways for added fun!

What about tracks? anyone particular favorites you have?

I'm old school, Deep Forest has always been my favourite track. My most exciting GT moment was breaking into the sub-1 minute on that track.

I also really miss the Complex String and Midfield.

As for new tracks in GT5, I like Cape Ring Periphery, but hate the full Cape Ring.

So as the original force behind this show, have you always wanted to do something like this and if so, how long have you planned it?

The idea popped up shortly after the Top Gear partnership was announced in 2007. I never thought it would take off. I just wish I would have had the time to commit to it, but life happened all of a sudden. Guess that's what happens.

Getting to know people is always fun and I think it helps bring the community together too. I was the editor of our newspaper back in high school so I kind of always had a desire to interview people and learn more about a part of them. The human element to anything is always a cool thing too.

Have you played around with photomode at all? If so, how do you like it?

I have but I didn't really care for it. The locations, while unique and cool in their own ways, weren't really suited to modern cars. Anything old school fit in perfectly, but there just wasn't that modern car vibe.

I also wish it gave me more options for angles, lighting, and lens choices. I guess it's me being a slight photo-geek but it just seemed lacking. Although I am simply amazed what people have done with it by taking some pictures and then cleaning them up in Photoshop. I've seen some pretty realistic stuff, so a big 👍 to everyone there!

What is your favourite GT game and why?

It's a close race between GT3 and GT4, but I think GT3 was more fun despite having less to do. I spent hours and hours when I was younger playing GT3 and I remember doing the Super Speedway enduro race countless times in the F1 car to get money. Typically I had friend help and we'd see who could get the fastest lap time.

Also other favourite was the Complex String and hot lapping it with various cars. I'd start off with a stock car and run a few laps, then add a performance part and run it again to see how the car improved.

Any other video games do you enjoy playing?

I have always had a thing for RPG's, especially action RPG's. Oddly enough I still Diablo II: Lords of Destruction despite having beat it more times then I can remember. Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 were both excellent games I spent a stupid amount of time on, as well as it's fantasy counterpart, Dragon Age. Neverwinter Nights 2 still gets played but that comes from years of Dungeons & Dragons with my friends in their basements.

Another lesser known game I play quite a bit is Mount & Blade and Mount & Blade: Warband. It's a pretty unique game that combines RPG elements with large scale battles. The mod community is epic too so you can make the game pretty much do anything you want.

Past that Kari, my girlfriend, and I play the Lego games quite a bit. Our favourite is Indiana Jones 2 but I just picked up the Harry Potter one for us to try. They aren't really hard but they make for great co-op games we both can enjoy!

As a keen viewer, how do like the show? Is it in anyway as good as you wanted it?

I am glad you picked up the ball I dropped and continued this, I enjoy reading the interviews and it's everything I thought it would be and more!

You have done a fantastic job bring the show to life and getting some interesting members who really know how to drive well! I am looking forward to seeing the lap time board grow!

Switching to real life, what do you drive? Is it in the game and if so, how does in compare?

07 MINI Cooper in sparkling silver/black. The MINI Cooper S it in the game which has the same suspension as my car (mine is a Justa, non-S). Even though the game car is more powerful the handling feels similar enough. I have driven several Cooper S's and they feel more planted but it's hard to recreate that in a game so I'll give GT a pass on that one :P.

The interior is slightly off though, but only a MINI owner would ever notice the little glitches.

Whats your favorite car and what is it about it that you like so much?

Hmm tough one here. There are a lot of cars I really admire and respect. I guess if I had to pick one vehicle to drive and love for the rest of my life it would be a Land Rover Defender. I've always wanted a proper Land Rover that I could go out and explore the world in...although it would probably break down on me .

Whats your other hobbies?

Travelling is a huge interest of mine, even local exploration. I just get into my car and go find some place interesting. We have a lot of unique places in Michigan and it's always neat to seek em out. I also enjoy photography, which sort of goes hand-in-hand with travelling.

I also do armature archaeology when the ground isn't frozen. My degree is in anthropology and archaeology, but since the US isn't real into the whole digging the past thing I couldn't get a job in the field. Volunteering my time on the weekends though to go play in the dirt is something that keeps my interest peaked. I'm still working on a local dig involving the homestead of the founder of a town near by.

Anything else you'd like to say?

GTP has really been the best time waster in the entire world. I have no idea how I would have made it through all my boring classes, work days, conference calls, and what not without it. Big props to Jordan for making a place to call my internet home 👍!

Let us see how the creator does with his lap

And you do it in One...Thirty...Four point seven fourty four.

Mine lap would be a "C" instead of a "W", I'm allergic to wheels on video games .

Great interview Joey and Racecar 👍 I must admit I've got a soft spot for Defender's myself :)

How come you never see this track in the wet?

The Top Gear track doesn't have dynamic weather.

So this is why Joey bailed on hosting the SIARPC! You can't be the star when you're the host!

You know I kid, Joey. Good interview and good lap!

Great format for a thread, thanks to Joey for the idea and Racecar for taking up the mantle. 👍

The interviews are great, it's nice to get a bit of an insight into some of the members here.

Keep up the good work. 👍

Cheers Shaun.

Nice lap Joey, good interview too. Nice to see this coming along, though I'm secretly dreading each one just in case someone comes along and thrashes my time! It's like being Jay Kay, only without the massive ego. And the money, to be fair.
