I feel like celebrating friday's PAL-GT300 race with pics of the race seen from my seat.
The RM tyres is an interesting new twist. When to use them? And would it be possible to do a 1-stopper with them?
Lap 2
Start, nicely lined up after the formation lap. I have pole. The whole furious Team Garaiya (Moleman, C-Falcon and Nepalii) is right behind me.
I expected that at least someone would start on RM's and blast away from the start. But it turned out that everyone started on RH's.
Lap 2
GV27 in the Lexus drafts and outbrakes 2 Garaiyas in corner 1 and goes from 5th to 3rd.
Lap 3
Moleman passed me on the straight. GV27 tried too, but we got close and both got a poor exit from corner 1, allowing Moleman to escape, while Nepalii and Josh-F catch up. C-Falcon is already out, in pit for damage repair.
Lap 8
Lap after lap, GV27 and I battle for second place. Hot on our heels Nepalii and Josh-F are doing the same for fourth.
And while we all waste our time swapping positions, Moleman just gets further and further ahead.
Lap 10
Josh-F had lost our draft after a small mistake in the chikane, Nepalii caught up, and our pack of three went on swapping positions on the straight mostly. Moleman stays 3-4 secs ahead.
I pit early (end of lap 11) and switch to RM's.
Now to go hot-lapping!
Lap 13
Moleman comes out of pit, followed by GV27, Nepalii and Josh-F. They all stay on RH's!
On the straight I pass C-Falcon as well as the guys in pit.
So early pitting worked, even despite I lost some seconds on lap 12 due to bumping C-Falcon in the brake zone before chikane, thankfully no damage for either.
Lap 13 becomes my fastest, and I quickly catch up with Moleman. Everything is looking good, but then Moleman puts up a great fight, and I make more mistakes, so it is not until ...
Lap 15
... that I finally pull a badly timed draft overtake on Moleman. He just barely misses winning it back before the end of the straight. Behind us are GV27, oalithgow, Nepalii and Josh-F.
Lap 14-15 became .43's instead of 41's, the best part of my RM's is wasted. Frustrated I go on trying to build a lead, but I know I have blown it already.
Lap 23
Nepalii catches up to GV27 after a long hunt, while Moleman maintains the 3 second lead he built in stint 1.
Ahead by 8 seconds, I end this lap going to pits and back to RH's.
GV27 also comes into pits as I am leaving.
Lap 25
Moleman gets out of pit right behind GV27, who closed the gap by pitting one lap earlier. Nepalii following some seconds behind.
The wolf pack is out. They are all on RM's for their final stint. The sheep is 8 seconds ahead, but only on RH's.
10 laps to go. All I can hope for is they make mincemeat out of each other instead of me ... but on lap 31 the inevitable happens, Moleman takes the lead.
Lap 32
I had expected them to blast by.
But I am still hanging on!
Lap 32
When both GV27 and Moleman go wide in corner 1, I am back in the lead!
Lap 32
The battle is fierce, but I am not intent to roll over just because I have worse tyres.
Lap 32
There are many overtaking spots on Fuji ...
Lap 32
... but it is hard to build a lead.
The battling slows Moleman and GV27, and it allows Nepalii to get close enough to catch our wind.
Lap 33
Nepalii caught up on the straight, and Moleman is almost beaching it.
Lap 33
I can not believe that I have stayed with the pack for two laps now, despite the tyres.
Lap 33
How will this end??
Lap 34
The beginning of the end. Me, GV27, Nepalii, Moleman. The race is more open than ever before. Everyone are all in now, it is racing as it's hardest, and finest.
Lap 34
I forget to defend the inside of corner 1, and in an instant, GV27 and Nepalii pass by.
Lap 34
Not long after, Moleman follows suit.
Lap 34
What a joy to race like this. No contact.
But my tyres are not up to the final push. Or is it my head?
Lap 34
Final corner of final lap.
GV27 keeps the lead onto the straight, with Nepalii and Moleman following.
Lap 34
But Nepalii steals his draft, and the victory!
Amazing race guys
Sprint race
No pics sorry. It was a good race for me, many others had accidents though. Started on RH's, fought my way up, pitted on lap 5 to go on RM's.
I got away with Josh-F, we ran neck to neck for the entire second half of the race, building a good lead.
And so it was all down to the final corner again! I went in first, but messed it slightly, Josh got up on my side so I could not go behind and use his draft, and so it was a drag race down the straight, which he won by a mere 0.076
All in all, I could not have asked for a better racing night, and it promises well for the season.
