First race of the season, and damn, what race it was. I don't know how long this luck is going to last, or whether I'm improving as a driver, but the last two races, PURE Daytona and this one, have just been brilliant. Seriously, I was buzzing for the whole race, but that feeling of pure adrenaline and intensity stuck with me throughout, and I love it
Definitely given me some faith in GT5..
Anyway, enough of the deep stuff, pictures + report = jammy heaven.
Too many nerves in Qualifying ended up with me way off my PB and down in 10th, so I had to have a good strategy that would be as quick as possible. I went for a 2-stopper, with a pit on Lap 13 and another on Lap 26 for mediums, and this seemed to work very well in the end. I also made small adjustments to my tune, and somehow it went from oversteery to understeery
It really affected the car more than I expected, I wasn't able to lap very fast, but I was really consistent, and it paid off.
The start mostly went off without a hitch, and one of my finer moments of the race was in the beginning, because I just kept overtaking, ducking through any gaps I could find.
After a small battle with Lynchy, I caught up to Stretch, mainman, and OK8, and fought my way through each one of them for several laps. I got trumped on the straights, especially by OK8 in his trollin' NSX, as the Lexus just doesn't have the acceleration, but I made it up on the corners. After a while, all 4 of us huddled together to keep warm, and traded positions in a thrilling, clean battle, and then Red decided to get involved! Fun stuff indeed, great work guys 👍
Eventually I got close to my first pitstop, and as my tires were fairly worn, I decided to calm the pace a little, not that I had a choice as the oversteer was frightening in the tight corners
Our group of 5 was still together, just a little spread out, as I pitted on Lap 13.
OK8 pitted at the same time, and I made a lot of mistakes on the first lap out. Cue some serious time-gaining on the straight. He didn't need the draft, got right on my tail in an instant
He got past me fairly easy, and really spread the gap on the straight, leaving me with no way of responding. He rode off into the distance, catching up to mainman as I was getting ready to deal with Lynchy.
Things really got interesting though when I found tony and FAK_EV1L limping round the track. Suddenly I was in 5th, not too far off the podium! Not bad considering I had started in 10th. With Stretch soon to overtake me, on Lap 25 I pitted again, but after putting mediums on the front, I accidentally pressed OK, resulting in mediums on the front and hards on the back, and I thought I had thrown the race away
Luckily the car was still quite grippy, just with a bit more understeer. I came out of the pits right behind a resurgent tony, who was on hards, but still quite hard to catch. I managed to get close to him as he fought past Lynchy, whose draft propelled me closer. I overtook Lynchy around the outside of Turn 2, giving me full rein to rope tony in, and after a small, but tough battle, I finally took him and pulled away at Turn 3 (I moment I will never be able to relive
)
As tony got embroiled with Litchi, I noticed that Stretch was falling back rapidly due to his one-stop, and I figured I would catch up to him by the end of the last lap.. and I was right. I jumped into his rear mirror at Turn 5, but I couldn't pass him until the second-to-last corner, only just making it around the outside. He had my draft, but it wasn't enough to take 4th back off me..
A thoroughly exciting race all-in-all, clean from my POV as well, looking forward to more of this kind of stuff in the future. Sprint race report will come later, this took more than an hour to compile
Oh and a last note, I did end up going outside the kerb quite a few times on that last corner, but it was by no means intentional. The car was very unstable through that corner, if I turned it too far right it would slide a lot, so I just had to let it go as straight as possible through there. If anything, the distance past the kerb was minimal, and the time gained was minimal as well, so hopefully no harm done.
