Thanks Simon! And wow, 27 on RM!! I knew you were going for zero stops, but I was joking when I said "yeah, all the race on RM!". I thought you'd use RH. You must have had one hell of tyre management, Simon 👍 .
Today was the sweetest "racing weekend" I've ever had. Pole position, second place on feature race and a victory on the sprint race. Seems like taken straight from a dream!
I knew my car was not the fastest here, because it lacks top speed. Actually, it may very well be the worst car on top speed. However, on the Monza chicanes it went well enough. I used a specific qualifying setup that would allow me to make the most out of my engine, and changed the gear ratio for the race. I tested it before starting, and I realised I was losing only about 0.150 per lap, with the "new" setup. I knew I had nothing to do if I used the qualifying tune, so I had to adapt.
My strategy was quite simple. I would stay in the front group for the whole race and hope to manage a way to steal the win at the last moment. Either this, or hope for a mistake of Josh, who I already knew would be my biggest rival today.
From the beginning I realised we'd be close together the whole race. And it was exactly like that. Thrilling battles, cool cooperation as I bump-drafted him to escape the group that was chasing us during the first third of the race.
I decided to pit one lap before I had planned. It would give me 2'5 seconds distance to Josh, after he pit next lap. If I managed it properly, maybe I'd be able to maintain the gap, or even increase it. But he was a little bit faster than me, and consistently closed the time difference. I also ended up catching Simon, who was on old tyres, and even so, the engine of his RX-7 made it hard for me to overtake him, and I lost even more time to Josh. Soon we were already together. If it wasn't for Simon, Josh would have caught me anyway, though!
The last part of the race was exhilarating. We both knew it would all come down to the last lap, and at some point we were both slowing down so the other would take the lead, in some laps. I wanted to try and practice some final straight overtaking maneuvres. The one that came closer ended up with me being 0.005 behind him on the finish line.
On the last lap, I was on the inside of the chicane, and we touched a little bit. We swapped positions, and Josh touched the grass, lost his car a bit and almost went off track. He hit me, and I was left with damage for the remainder of the lap. I would not be able to fight like that! Fortunately, the damage was light, and I was able to keep up, and on the last straight it looked as though I would be able to make it. I kept the appropriate speed and distance... but as I moved to the left, so did Josh. My car touched his, and the race was over.
I was so disappointed at that moment, but so happy about a great race finishing in such an amazing fashion. I was delighted that my damage did not really ruin the last lap, since it would have been a shame. Congratulations to Josh, who did a great job, and we had such a fun race.
As for the sprint race; I was going to come out on hards, but then, a last minute decision, and swapped to medium tyres. I had been thinking about it the whole afternoon, and I decided to take a risk (I thought it was risky, since I had to overtake a lot of people, and medium tyres meant I would waste some laps making my way through the field).
I can't really remember much of the race, as it was frenetic. I do remember colaborating with Paginas for a while to catch the frontrunners, and I felt like a wolf chasing its prey. Pushing harder and harder, wanting to get first. The luck seemed to (finally!) be on my side here, and even though I entered the pits on 2nd place behind Johnkiller, my crew was fantastic and I came out on first place. From then on, it was just pushing as hard as I could, with Josh slowly catching up. I'm convinced I could have maintained the lead one single lap more, but not two. So two more laps and I would have been in the exact same situation as in the feature race. Being quick enough to follow him, but lacking speed on the straights, which would make a victory impossible.
Finally, winning a race, and on WSGTC, too!! I'm really happy, and a lot of people here know just how long I have been chasing a victory for!! A victory on a sprint race sometimes means you started in front and used a good strategy, but today I think I overtook everyone except for Josh, who was behind me the whole time, and johnkiller, because of the pit stop. That makes me really proud, as it means the victory was well-earned through speed.
It really means a lot, so today it's a day to rejoice! I hope that this weekend is a breakthrough for me. Not so much in terms of talent as in terms of mentality. Drivers tend to improve after their first victory, as they "realise" they can actually win. I also hope that, withought the burden of never being able to win, I can concentrate on getting the best out of every race, instead of obsessively chasing a victory.
