High School

Anyone elses school require them to have 40 hours of community service before they graduate? I know here in Ontario, Canada we all have to and to me its just another addition to the stress high schoolers already have.

South Carolina would probably deem it as communism.

I live in BC, and I have to do at least 30 hours (Though I could do 90 if I wanted) of "work experience" to graduate, which I guess is pretty much the same. I decided to do 90, and I'm filling out the last 10 or so hours in May with some small volunteer things popping up.

Community service wasn't a requirement when I graduated, and as far as I know, it still isn't here. Then again, even if it was required, most people in my class would have lied about that anyway.

The thing is you can't lie about the hours since the school keeps track and it is mandatory to be able to graduate. I find it kinda silly because half the hours I've done weren't really helping the community. Mostly just helping out at school.

School is part of the community ain't it :P ?

While BSing work experience hours, BSing how much time I log for "daily physical activity" (because that's a grad requirement for some reason) is somewhat easier as long as I can get someone to sign off on it. I walk at least 20 minutes every weekday anyway, even if I end up taking the bus all the way to school.

The way the buses work where I live, I can get off and walk 20 or so minutes, or I can get off at one station and catch a bus that only comes every 20 minutes, but takes me right to the school. I usually only double bus it if I get to the second station within 10 minutes of the bus coming.

Here in Australia (or at least my school) it is only mandatory to do "work experience" if you are doing Work Studies or Hospitality. I don't do either :)

At my school, "work experience" is only mandatory if you are in Yr. 10 (you must do at least 5 days) and for TAFE (Yr.11 and 12 only) you need to do at least 70 hours over Yr. 11 and 12. I only have 25 hours left out of the 70 mandatory hours. I did 45 hours in 5 days (9 hour days) last year and I'm doing 36 (4 days) next week. Yr. 10 I did it at my local mechanic, last year I did it at my local mechanic and next week I'm going to do it at my local mechanic. I scored myself 3 extra days there while I didn't have anything on at school over the last 2 weeks of the term. I got $50 for those 3 days from my supervisor.

It is a lot of work, but it is what I want to do later in life.

Well i was going to go to school for one of the last few days left but apparently there are big rumors about fights and stuff happening today. Their was more police at my school than usual so I just decided to go back home, I don't want to be a part in anything.

Do you have such kind of "work experience" activities as part of your curriculum in your high school ?

While I was a high school student we didn't have that but I surely had an alike activity similar to "work experience" your school has while I was a junior high school pupil, principally in order to understand what it is like to have a job, how harsh your life will be when you actually start working, and to learn to prepare yourself for how you're supposed to do as a part of society after you become a grown-up. Yet it went like only 5 ~ 10 hours and wasn't mandatory for graduation like in your high school.

I live in Japan and I think some Japanese junior high or high school have similar work experience thing for students to have a chance to learn what exactly society is which can be useful when they find a job in the future or start working as a part-time outside school hours after you enter uni. :)

I guess you could say it's part of the curriculum, considering it's a requirement for graduation.

So I only have a week and three days left and then high school will be officially over with for me. As far as the rest of my life I may actually have a job if I want it at a car paint store, but I'm not so sure as of yet.

School starts again for me. I only have Maths and Ancient History this week.

I'll tell you guys my exam results once I get them but I think I've only passed Maths and English

I have to go all the way to mid June.

I'm guessing that's cause of the weather where you live at and school closings.
Or we're just on a different schedule. How many weeks of spring break do you get? I get two. Weather isn't really a factor. The worst we usually get here is rain (Though it did in fact hail briefly on Sunday night).

I started in late August and i get two weeks for my spring break. We did get out for one weather day this year cause we had a tornado happen.

So my brother went for a tims run in the car during his spare block and some fellow student ran up and lay done on the hood of the car. When he told me i was frickin pissed so now i am contemplating kicking a nail into his tire or not. His car is a brand new HRV and apparently he got away with speeding because his dad is on the local police force so no wonder he thinks hes top feces.

I've got a girl like that in my agriculture class
Meanwhile, I don't know any cops in town and I don't even drive. I take the bus to school. And before I moved last year, I walked. And I still have a 20-ish minute walk from the bus stop anyway, unless I can properly time the second bus that takes me directly to school but only comes every 20 minutes.

We had the typical ANZAC Service today. Never bothered with it.

I got my Maths Exam result, I got 99% :D. First time I ever got into the 90s.

He tapped on the side of the car like a drum set i seriously want to key it and put a nail in his tires.

I hate people who have spoiled upbringings and become absolute dickheads.

Thats probably the best way, there are always morons who want to wreck your stuff and if you walk or take the bus they got nothing to ruin for you.

I got equal 5th out of 8 students for music half yearly music exam, I got 67 / 100. the highest got 85 and the lowest was the only person who got less that 50, 7th got 60.

I thought most Japanese High Schools banned any sort of working and jobs?

Not exactly, to be honest. :P In my country about two third(?, not sure precisely how many, though) of the students actually do their own part-time labour in order to gain their own allowances independent from what their parents might give you once per each month, even though lots of high schools in Japan state it's more desirable for their students to focus on their study instead of accumulating experiences in society or any kinds of activities related to that, thus they "superficially" ban any type of workings including those part-time jobs as a side job which is irrelevant to their study at school, by school rules. But they are actually being slack to clack down on those students these days and the rules are getting less strict taking their parents' wishes into consideration, and especially in accordance with what students are planning to do / which path to go in the future after graduating from high schools.

It's becoming tougher for both students and their parents to pull in their money they have at hand since the school fee is rapidly increasing nowadays for the raise of prices of commodities / taxes and so is for students as things get more and more costly they need in their life, it's kinda being an old notion to "stick" to only studying as the main calling free from doing other things outside the school hours. Even though the percentage of those students entering university is more than double than about 50~100 years ago it's becoming a predominant idea to get yourself poised to social activities as soon as possible so as to lessen "future" concerns, rather than just for "earning money" for their pleasure / leisure activities.

Over here it seems still quite a "minority" but some high schools even go to great length to make their students exposed to what adults do through the "work experience" thingy similar to what Naveek(and some others) mentioned in their earlier posts. Yet my school was quite rigid at that point so I didn't have nary such an activity in my school curriculum, and there was only a handful of students involved in part-time work for "personal" reasons such as lack of money or training themselves before going into the world on leaving the school. :)
