Good Morning All and welcome to a very special HST Top Gear Special Event!
This past Thursday we were told to go out and buy the best 2nd Hand Classic Muscle Car we could find. Show up at our typical meeting spot, and see what "the producers" had in store for us.
Naturally, jay*doc was the first to arrive and he's driving a 1970 Dodge Challenger! Bold choice on the color, I must say!
Next to arrive is @
Ph1sher , in what appears to be a car he used in GT5 during our last Muscle Car Challenge. "That's right, same old Corvette from the GT5 event, still kicking! Just a fresh Chrome Blue Wrap and a new set of wheels!"
Up next was @
euclid58 , in an ultra mean sounding Challenger, he said he got from sold old NASCAR driver called Richard Petty. We'd have to ask Hammond who that is…
Following right behind was @
BionicDerp and @
3forSpeed . Derp was driving the HMS Plymouth and Roy went for the underdog, an awesomely classic looking Pontiac Tempest!
Right, so down to business. First challenge, reads: "Of all the vehicle choices you could have made, the average cost of those cars was $65,976.00. You'll receive 1 point for every thousand under, and lose 1 point for every thousand over."
Jaydoc and euclid both ponied up a massive $75,000.00 on their Challengers, giving them both -9pts.
Roy got an impressive deal on his Tempest, paying only $52,600, starting him off with +13pts.
Bionic got the deal of the century with his HMS Plymouth, at only $42,440.00, gaining +24pts.
But Phisher, recycling a car from GT5, saved his money and only paid for wheels and a wrap, spending $12,000.00 on the vette he already had, gaining a whopping 61pts! Nicely done Phish.
"Now you must find out how these 2nd Hand Classics Perform with a 7 Lap race of Laguna Seca, 100pts will go to 1st place, 90pts to 2nd and so on."
In vehicles built over 40 years ago and sketchy maintenance, we hit the track for our first race. Phisher, Derp, and Euclid had quite a bate at the front, and Jaydoc and Roy huddled at the back of the pack. In their excitement to get going, Jaydoc and Roy both played in the sand in Turn 1 to kick things off. With slick tires, it was a fight to the finish for all the racers!
After finishing Race 1, Euclid realized that this "Richard Petty" guy he bought his car off of must have known a thing or 2 about cars, his car was really well done! Thats the luck of the draw when buying a used car, and he still managed to wrangle it around the track, and pick off racers cleanly 1 by 1 to make his way to the front!
1st: Euclid, 2nd: Phish, 3rd: Bionic, 4th: Roy, 5th: Jay
"Now it's time to see just how much Horsepowers your cars have lost over the years. You'll lose 1 point for every Horsepower lost."
Jay's car, having never changed the oil, went from 425HP down to 363HP! Thats -62pts!
Phisher's Corvette, started life at 350HP, and now sits at 312HP, not bad. Still -38pts.
Roy's car, began at a modest 325HP originally, and has now reached 285HP. That's -40pts.
Euclid's car, staring at 425HP, has only lost 25HP over the years, bringing him to 400HP! Only -25pts.
And Bionic's Aircraft Carrier, set sail at 425HP, has come down to 380HP. -45pts to him.
The second race event with the lowered horsepower went off without a hitch, but the power loss really took a toll on Roys car. It came to a dignified stop after the race, but that was all she had.
1st: Phish, 2nd: Derp, 3rd: Jay, 4th: Euclid, 5th: Roy
"it's time to pack up and head from the West Coast, to the East Coast. You'll now be racing at Daytona Raceway, and may tune your vehicles any way you like, without swapping the engines (must keep power limiter on). Be careful though, your tires cannot be changed, so balance power and grip."
Arriving just before dusk we hit the track, the road course proved to be a good challenge, and a nice warm-up for the challenge that lies ahead…
The race was dominated by Phisher and Derp, battling back and forth the entire time. The Challengers didn't do so well, especially coming off the high speed baked corners. Despite this, Euclid managed to overcome the handling, and steal 2nd out from Phisher before it was over! Great work!
1st: Derp, 2nd: Euclid, 3rd: Phisher, 4th: Jay
The next morning, our final race challenge had arrived: "You may now tune your car in anyway you like, 100% full power, any tires, the works. You will be racing on the NASCAR track, just as some of these cars did in the 70's. Good luck, and try not to get killed."
A couple of cars around an oval, how hard can it be? Somebody had to say it… These cars proved to be quite a handful, and Dayton Road course has many more dips on it than we thought (and we don't mean the racers).
After an eventful 10 laps, of sliding, bumping, scraping, and spinning, we made it, all in 1 piece.
1st: Derp, 2nd: Phish, 3rd: Euclid, 4th: Jay
"Now, before you blow them up, sell your cars on ebay, and you'll get 1pt for every $1,000 it current bid price it at!"
Jay 60pts:
Euclid 60pts:
Phish 9pts:
Roy 12pts:
Derp 86pts:
After all was said and done, Derp and Euclid made a bet with Jay and Phisher. They thought that Classic NASCARs could outrun Modern Nascars and beat them in a 5 lap race. 50 Bonus points were put on the line, and a race was had…
NEW NASCAR vs OLD NASCAR
Euclid Drives with Nerves of Steel, if I were here in this situation, I'd be in the grass, but he kept his cool and avoided a wreck with Bionic.
Now, in the end, the winner was…. Phisher! In the New style NASCAR. BUT… upon further review, it looks like there may have been a little sabotage… There may have been slight contact (see: pit maneuver) between the Phish and Bionic. Our goal was to find out who had the faster NASCAR, and when it comes down to it, Modern Cars have the Grip, but the Classics have the speed. I'm calling this a draw!
Massively long post for the Top Gear Events! Now the Final Results, on my official scoreboard!
Looks like Derp is 3 for 3! Good Work Derp!
