ilikewaffles11's Toyotas

I eagerly await the "Oh.. I bit off more than I can chew" post.

I'm not so sure. As an autocrosser the body shouldn't matter too much as long as the frame is in good shape. From what I've seen of autocross you want a car you don't mind getting banged up.

How many cars does you dad have?

Short answer, a lot. If you include cars that don't run or are only used for specific things, such as the plow, I think it's ten at the moment.

Prettt much this. Since I don't plan on fixing the rust, the biggest thing is the fact that it needs a timing chain and a lot of brake work. I don't see why that'd be unnecessarily difficult, I have the resources available to me to do it. And the frame is indeed solid, just the body is rusted away.

My dad used to run and equally beat up '86 MR2 in autocross when I was a kid, and that was allowed to run no problem.

Now that sounds fun. Does he have a daily driver, or does he just keep a few at home and drive whatever he feels like?

You understand how unibodies work, right? The body is the frame. With massive hunks of the body missing like that rigidity will be abhorrent - add the increases stresses of hard cornering and the body is just going to rip its self apart within a few laps.

The car's toast, wouldn't touch it with a 50 ft barge pole for any purpose.

Well, he has a few daily drivers or just bad weather drivers. Then he has the few fun cars, which he'll generally rotate around. Usually he'll have one out for 2/3 weeks, then he'll get another one out and do the same, and then continue the cycle. Whenever the weathers crappy, he drives the crappy weather one and the fun cars stay home. And one is my mom's car.

Ah, right. Unibody is a thing...

Honestly though, I'm not so sure that the body is really rusty enough that it's that big of a deal. Maybe I'm wrong, I'm far from an expert. The only hole in it is the one in the drivers side floor, and that's not THAT large. The rest for the most part is just rotted and rusty body panels, not the body itself. Correct me if I'm wrong, but surely that won't have any affect on ridgity no?

Depends. The outer skin is as important as the inner layers if they're not bolt on (front quarters for instance) so the fact there are big holes is a big issue - the biggest concern however is if there are massive hunks missing like that what's the inside like? AW11s have glaring design flaws when it comes to water, now if you keep it garaged or at least kept in a car port it's normally fine, but if it's been sitting outside under trees with dirt all over it? chances are dirt has seeped into the water channels which will turn into mud come rainfall which will block up those channels and leave you with nice little reservoires of water mixed with plant matter - that's where harder to see and more terminal rust happens.

Not to mention with the "Bonnet" design of an AW11, literally everything inside that engine bay is going to need replacing. I'm not saying all this to be a dick I'm saying this to try save you from a too far gone project - you can find far more suitable beaters for a lot less than what I promise you'll end up spending trying to get that hunk moving under it's own power leave alone try and sort out it's wet wheatabix chassis

Once rust starts it's like a cancer, if you don't get on it quick it's spreads to the point of no return, this AW11 unfortunately is well past that. Theoretically it's possible to repair but the labour involved makes it entirely uneconomical - and again this is all just based on what I can see from these photos who knows what the inside is like.

You do whatever you want bro, I'm just giving my view on it and trying to help.

I've just been speaking with my flatmate, he's a certified mechanic and has been doing it for over 10 years. I showed him the images and told him your plans and he's advising the same thing, too far gone.

I understand where you're coming from and I see what you mean. However, I'm not really fixing this up to be a nice restoration project. It's basically just to get it running, get a few more years out of it, have fun with it, and probably just scrap it after that. The thing is, the engine is still pretty solid. It ran last time it was parked. Yes yes, I know 'ran when parked' doesn't mean anything after sitting for a while, but with a jumped battery it started right up every time.

This whole project is dependent on if no more major problems have developed since it's sat. If really all it does need is a timing chain, brakes, tires, and maybe a few other odds and ends, I'd think it's worth the investment personally. Again, no body repair except for what is absolutely necessary, such as the hole in the floor. If we go through with it, it's probably gonna look like hell, but I'm sure it'll be a blast to drive and that's all that really matters.

My dad has been showing interest in fixing it up as well since he loves them as well and wants to see it run again... So I've also got that going for me.

If you're serious about going through with this the first thing you need to get is staggered rims, AW11s from factory were sent out with matching widths, despite common knowledge that MR cars need to have rear tyres at least two sizes larger than the front. That's the accepted norm now but when the AW11 was released Toyota for whatever reason didn't run staggered, could have been regulation? never really looked into it.

Either way, make sure that's the first thing you do if you don't fancy being wrapped around a pole, along with all new bushings and suspension - the kit that's in it will be screwed.

If I go through with it, will do. 👍

If you need any parts for that AW11, let me know. Me and my dad stripped a couple of 88's that had to be crushed. I do have a 4AGZE with an auto tranny, all computers, and full engine harness if your interested.

On the topic of staggered rims, you shouldn't need staggered rims unless you have enough power to break the rears free. The best setup, from what I have researched for my car, is 205/50r15 all around. I personally plan on running 205/50r16 because I picked up a set cheap.

If I need something, I'll let you know! 👍 I think we have some spare parts at work though. I know there's at least a spare 4AGE sitting at work.

Yea I was wondering about that. My dad used to autocross his '86 and he left the stock wheels on it without a problem.

I'm not saying that power is the only way to break the rears loose. What I'm saying is that the MK1 MR2 performs best with a square set up, unless you have gobs of power.

But hey, what do MR2 owners know. (http://www.mr2.com/forums/threads/70855-Which-Wheel-Size-15-quot-or-16-quot)

I'm not even going to bother, tired of trying to help people on this site - all so clueless and entirely unwilling to listen to any opinion that isn't their own even when blatantly wrong.

If you had any basic grasp of physics you wouldn't be arguing with me, so I won't bother - simply don't have the energy for the intelligence level of this site any more.

Isn't it rather common sense? I mean, with more weight towards the rear of the car, with narrow tyres, they're just going to be overwhelmed, in an effect that the weight pushes the rear around making it an absolute pig to drive. That's a basic definition to my understanding, but it seems about right to me?

Lol, like power is the only factor for breaking rear traction  That's adorable.

But hey, what would I know.
Your opinion.

Lol, How Ironic.

I didn't realize grasping basic physics is opinion now?

It's the same as not believing global warming.

@ilikewaffles11 one Toyota fan to another, worth it?

5G for the truck and spares... I'm just skeptical about the price and condition.

I would try and chew him down a bit because of the body work and paint job it needs. I mean hell, you could get a much cleaner one for that price. Otherwise I would say yea, worth it.

Though that soft top looks awful. :yuck: I hate those. Looks a million times nicer with the removable hard top.

Edit: Just saw the bottom text you wrote. Didn't see that it had spares. I would say it's worth it if you're interested.

Yeah I hate the soft top as well. Found an '86 4Runner with a hard top and soft top. Looked better. All the Celica's are coming out of the woodwork this time of year! Maybe I can get one! Drive down for Cars and Coffee and make sure you're not the only Celica :P

Plus I just think the whole removable hard top idea is awesome. If a pain in the ass. When I get one eventually, I'm definitely going to the drive in with the top off! :D And of course doing some cruising!

But damn those Supras and Celicas are clean! All the ones on the local CL are mostly beat to hell. I really like that blue '82. One of my favorite colors, especially when it's the two tone blue. That and terra cotta, I wanted to paint my car that color.

Damn, that 1UZ swapped one is awesome! Even has a digital dash!!

The MK1 Supras are cool, but I don't know if I'd want something so old. The MK2 is at that right age for me that it's old but not TO old and it feels just right.

There was a really mint silver Celica Sunchaser on Craigslist a while back which was interesting. I was browsing 'Bring a trailer' this morning and found it on there.

I love these cars. This is what I hate about this time of year. All the nice cars come out now but if I were to buy one it would go straight into storage. I am really interested in that 1UZ-FE however I'll probably never get to drive it. I was looking into more trucks but only a couple of them were decent.

I know that feel. Supra will have to go away soon. Not looking forward to it. Will be sad. :(

And yea, better get used to that. :indiff: Most of the trucks are pretty shot.

So got to show my Supra at a larger than usual car show today. Which was enjoyable. Went with my dad who took his Triumph TR7, in all of its bright yellow glory.

So finally got a chance to wash it Saturday after like two weeks of not doing so. Hey don't blame me, blame the weather. Was absolutely filthy, but hey finally clean. I also put some tire shine on it for the first time ever...

I like it
image.jpg

So I got to be the pack mule again. Such practicality.

Dat ass, with my old man and the most stereotypical looking Pontiac Fiero owner in existence on the left.
image.jpg

Of course as per usual at predominately American car shows, hardly anyone cared. Saw a few people looking, some guy offered to sell me a spare tire for one. But whatever, I don't really go to car shows for people to gawk over my car, I'd rather look at everyone else's! :D Plus at this show, people always hand out free candy and stuff, it's pretty legit.

I was also promised a dash plaque in my goodie bag. I was lied to. I'm upset. :grumpy: I got like, some nail clippers and other various items as such though. Which is.. Interesting. I guess.

Leaving was fun as well, considering how nobody is paying attention to me trying to drive by.

So yesterday I had some time to kill so figured may as well go for a drive. And I discovered I absolutely ****ing love driving in the Fall.

Large photo dump incoming

Went to the usual windy road

image.jpg

As much as I wish the summer was still here, I love fall in Pennsylvania simply because it looks so damn pretty...

Unfortunately, the nicest section (which happens to be my favorite section to drive as well) has nowhere to pull off for photos. Believe me when I say that it looks like a road where Porsche would do a photo shoot for their brochures or something.

image.jpg

Makes me really wanna get a GoPro. Would be a pretty cool video I think. At least I'd enjoy watching the scenery go by as the sound of the lovely exhaust note fills the air.
image.jpg

image.jpg

But this'll have to do. :P This little road here is nice because nobody goes on it so you can stop and get some photos wherever you please.
image.jpg

I also took it to a cruise in that night. Nobody cared as usual.

I've got about two weeks left before it goes away for the winter. I'd like to make the most out of it!
