Look at that F1 car. Stretched tires. Freaking idiots.

Someone from the internet should call those guys up and give them a lesson on how dangerous that was.

Yeah because everyone that has stretched tires knows more than car manufacturers and current F1 cars have stretched tires. I mean, I'm ok with some stretching, even some cars have OEM stretching as seen here:

But thing like this are just not right

I know. I'm just saying that because everyone seems to think that stretched tires are the single leading cause of tire blowouts and car crashes or something.

That, and that it started with some idiots in a VW Golf, when it clearly goes back WAY further than that, and was actually done for a reason.

Not to mention that they weren't stretched, that was just the shape of the tyre. It'd be like calling a motorcycle tyre stretched because it curves all the way to the rim...

And you know this how? Do you have pictures of an old f1 tire before it was mounted? Because after being mounted, stretched tires somewhat remain stretched.
This is the best I could find; 1970 JPS Lotus Goodyear.

The seller didn't specify it as being used.

I can go all day, and not just the Fiat cars.

Since that F40 is mounted with Michelin PS2s like every other modern supercar, it needs to be given a modern road test to see how it stacks up. I bet 20+ years worth of advances in tire technology would be quite noticeable on the stopwatch.

The same needs to be done for a McLaren F1. I've never seen one with PS2 tires mounted, or any other modern supercar tire for that matter.

My friend is very adamant about the F40 being t3h suck, both then and now. I've made this argument and he believes any up to date tests of the F40 or the F1 (it was brought into a Veyron discussion) aren't using 20 year old tire tech...

As interesting as it would be, the Eagle F1 tires on the F1 are made & developed specifically for it, similar to the Veyron's case.

Evo did just this.

Result: Faster than an Enzo around a circuit.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the F50 would be faster than both the F40 and Enzo around a circuit with an ace driver and equal tires. That thing was an absolute monster in the corners.

Lose the attitude. My point is that old F1 tyres were designed for that fitting. They didn't design a tyre to fit a certain rim and then stretch it over a smaller one, no more than current F1 tyres bulge out at the sides because they're fitted to too small a rim.

Whatever you think of the look of stretched tyres, they aren't designed to be fitted that way, otherwise cars would leave the showroom like that. F1 tyres were designed to be fitted that way.

Does Goodyear still make those original tires for the F40? That would be pretty wild.

That was so cool. The F1 is pretty much the ultimate "my kind" of road car. Usually I don't like cars that are mad powerful and highly capable, but that car makes you work hard for what it has to offer, unlike most modern supercars. The F1, F40, F50, Diablo, etc. Takes balls to drive any of them fast and that's the way it should be.

Oh, and it has a proper manual box, of course.
