Input lag really isn't lag?

First party devs do not need to go through the same lengthy process as 3rd party devs for certification. At least a few of us here understand this...

^ What above poster says

From what i understand, 3rd party developer patches go through weeks and weeks of testing before a patch is released for it. First party developers do not.

Exactly.

Take a look at the TDU2 patch. It took ages before it was finally released.

Forgive-me if the question i'm about to ask is stupid. I'm far from being a developer so I can only understand economical and political reasons on why this delays occur.

What needs to be tested/certified that delays the process so much?

I mean, the SDK is the same (maybe this is where i'm wrong) for all developers so you'll know it'll be optimized for that one platform.

One can test the software all they want, no software is perfect. More often than not patches even have regressions.

Just asking.

Thanks for clearing that up

But now I have to say that Microsoft software is 0-day hackable from the beginning... But I understand Sony's side :)

Also maybe bricking systems and such too I would guess.

Not sure if it's possible to screw up your hardware but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

^ No, it's not likely (as in practically impossible) that a system will be bricked, or otherwise destroyed by any games.

The lengthy testing and approval process for 3rd party developer is probably partly for security reasons, as deftonesmx17 mentioned, in this day of Internet enabled consoles, and also for actual game testing and quality assurance. They (console manufacturers) will not allow 3rd party developers to screw up and make their platform look bad.

Shift 1 had lag from the beginning and they never patched it.

Why would they release Shift 2 with the same bug if they were able to patch that?

I fear this not patchable.

And Im affraid you are right :indiff:

Quick post to say that we've removed the lag internally (well, down to hardware limits) and we're have a blast in testing with the wheels here. Some 'late in the day' asynchronous changes with a view to optimization put things out of kilter a touch. The changes mean that the input is now processed very early on in the frame and filtered through to the physics as quickly as possible.

Big thanks to gtplanet forums and members for the feedback. We do read as much as we can.

This post made me buy the game... too bad it wasnt true... the patch did not fix the imput lag at all... or the FFB on and off issues... or the jittering cars in replays, and its a shame that we cant know what it was suposed to fix because nobody from SMS or EA has made any comunication regarding this.

Is it that hard to keep people informed...

'This' patch didn't fix it, but the next one might, if there is one. I haven't lost hope yet and have actually become used to the setup.

This game is brilliant, and if you are suffering from lag, its in your brain. I have the PC version and PS3 version and both are fantastic. I didn't even change anything on the PS3 version and the game drives perfect for me. I think its the group think mentality. OMG LOOK THAT GUY SAYS HE HAS STEERING LAG, I SUCK TOO SO I MUST HAVE STEERING LAG TOO!!! etc, etc. I do admit though that the steering sensitivity on the PC version was set too low. I use an XBOX controller on the PC, setting the sensitivity to @40% and deadzone to 3%, and smooth driving after that.

I am waiting on my DFGT wheel to see how it is with the wheel, but as for the controller, i see no problems. Fix your eyes. Get lasik or something.

@IanBell

This game is amazing, there a few things I would love to see:

An option to play custom soundtracks (PS3/XBOX).

Damaged lights in night racing (no headlights after front end collision).

Debris on track after impact can cause flat tires (if this already happens, I haven't experienced it), however with no pitting this can be a love/hate relationship.

Windshield wipers are used (auto or manual button press) to clear dirt off the windshield.

I think those can be easily done in patches, but I am not a dev so I wouldn't know. Great game guys!

There is lag, this has been acknowledged by SMS themselves an will be addresses in patches 1 and 2. Pc will be patched in 1 go, but they split the console patches up. Not sure why.

So, the lag should be fixed in v1.02 which will be released soon.

PS3 owners breathe a sigh of relief!

Besides my brain lagging and me sucking and my eyes needing a doctor what else do you recomend... so that I recomend the same at SMS because they acknowledged the lag and adressed it in the patch.

Do you really need to be offensive to get your point across? wich in fact is wrong.

I fixed your post for you. :sly:👍

The severity of the lag probably depends on the specific controller/wheel you're using.
Personally, I play with a HKS Racing controller, and for me the lag is barely noticeable. If it's there at all, it's nowhere near the 0.5 second that some are experiencing.

Before or after 1.01 patch?

Would you mind posting your controller settings in the HKS thread please?

Thanks! :)

I know it sounds harsh with what I said, but seriously I have no idea what this input lag is that everyone is talking about. I run the game on the PC and PS3 with no problems. I edited my PC version controller settings (XBOX controller) and set the sensitivity to 50%, 0% Dead Zone and even better driving and lap times then my previous 40%/5%.

Helmet Cam + No hud = Epic racing!.

I will fraps some of my replays, and frap a live race and post it on here.

I really wish those additions I listed can be implemented by SMS, it would make this game legendary in my opinion.

Pitting, dynamic weather, and day/night transitions would be great but I think they should save that for a third installment if possible, or provide it as a DLC.

Side Note:

I noticed some cool things after more racing. The helmet cam is great for giving you cues on what to do, when to start breaking when to turn in, when to accelerate. You just have to really pay attention to the movement. I guess you really have to pretend you are racing.

Also after figuring out there are different telementary displays, specifically one that shows tire temp, after doing a lap from first start, I noticed the car was more loose, I had to break early for corners in order not to slide off the track. After the first lap, and in some cases 3/4ths of the way through the first lap, once the temp of the tires got higher, i was able to be more aggressive and really push it. This to me is one of the many little details that I love about this game.

Again Cudo's to SMS for really making a fantastic game.

patch destroyed ffb in driving force gt. Do not reset wheel setting or you'll loose the ffb. Now it's bugged. The first race i did has ffb than if a pause or start another race i lose all the ffb, every time.

Play GT5 for awhile. Pay attention to how quickly the car reacts to your turn inputs. You turn and nothing happens for .5 of a second in s2u. Equivalent to playing Rock Band and your drum hits or strums take .5 sec to register in the game.

Which reminds me Guitar Hero. But GH lets you calibrate the controllers using a few tests and voilá, problem solved.

Is this "technique" not possible with a wheel? Any dev care to answer? :D

That only proves that the steering rack moves with the wheel, not the physics engine.

I am just now getting into the game since getting the day it came out. I set the sensitivity to 100% and 900 lock with 0 speed and it drives pretty good.

drifting is just silly with a wheel. Rant***HIDDEN TXTHow does GT5/FM have one physics engine and nail drifting and Shift has a dedicated engine that's pure fail?end***

^ There is no separate engine for drifting. Just different tyres and increased power for cars with < 500HP.

Shift 2 lacks steering assist filters in the controls, which, even though people bitch and moan about them in Forza and don't notice what they're doing the rest of the time in GT and Forza, it's what makes drifting controllable and easy.

Same with steering. People find Shift 1/2's steering 'twitchy' with a pad, but it's because the inputs aren't as filtered, so pressing the stick full left/right will cause full lock pretty quickly, unlike in the other games.

Well then to me in my opinion, if these changes are forced then the engine is different even if its technically not. The cars spin too easy even when the wheels are not spinning. On top of that there is a bug that forces the car in a fixed direction at low speed with wheel turned the other way. Drift mode is not user friendly using a wheel.
