Interesting game review

Speaking of advertising, commonsensemedia should be sued for false advertising in their name. Calling themselves "common sense" is akin to calling your pet dalmatian "Stripe".

When are they going to realise that the problem isn't with the games, or the TV, or the music? It's in the person. If someone is dumb enough to think that because they can bounce off a concrete wall at 200mph in GT4, they can do the same in real life, then they had problems long before they got near the game. I grew up watching Road Runner cartoons, but never once in my whole life have I believed that I could regularly plummet 3000 feet down a ravine and survive.

By the way, what's "Shoots and Ladders"? Is it, like "snakes and ladders" but where you get to shoot your opponents? I can't believe that they'd allow such a family game in this day and age :dopey:

While we are on the topic of rather odd reviews, I thought I would share this interesting reader review from a magazine that I used to subscribe to (and is no longer in print);

I have been a loyal fan of Gran Turismo since the beginning. I got the the first game on the first day, and through me literally hundreds of people have experienced (the game) and brought their own copies. I own all four Gran Turismos-with three memory cards dedicated to GT3 and preordered GT4 over three years ago, such is my dedication. I am SO disappointed in GT4 the developers took away all the freedom and sucked the fun right out of the game. The races feel more like a chore than fun. In the quest for realism, they have ruined what fun the game once had-the whole tire-changing thing is just annoying. The two-player mode contains the most evidence of the game's incompletion: splitscreen replay? Are we back in 1994?
Where's my option for one solid replay? Why can't I save my replay in two-player mode? Why give us cars we can't compete with? The racing is solid, but the options I need to enjoy these races are missing. The game is unfinished; even the menu screens feel rushed. I love GT but I would have waited another year for them to get it right.

Then this guy ("Nigel", BTW) gave it 3.5 out of 5, compared to the magazine's rating: a perfect 5 out of 5.

So, is he right? Personally, I think he's wrong, but that's my opinion. I want to hear you guys' opinion, what do you think?

Did Ned Flanders write that review?

I diddly-i-o think so.

Ahh, man... that's the worst review I've ever seen in my life. :banghead:

LOL... Yeah, forget about the enhanced physics, hundreds of new cars, improved graphics, new tracks, new gameplay features, etc... the most noticeable change by far is a few dotted lines on the track. Sounds like the reviewer spent about 3 minutes completing a driving test, then assumed the rest of the game would remain exactly the same as his first impression. I really dislike this reviewer... what a complete idiot. 👎

Edit: Wtf? Why does this kid also add a comment about the adds?:

Yeesh... what an odd 14-year-old

I say: Horrible Game in the fun department...
This game is probably one of the most boring, stressful games I have ever played. It is absolutely impossible to handle the cars unless you are extremely farimiar with the series. The only reason I still play it is because I like taking pictures of my car. At the same time, the game was not inappropriate at all in my opinion. All of the Ads make it look like a real world.
OK for kids my age: Y

Boring and stressful?? Sure, I can see that...it's one person's opinion after all, and it is a pretty tough game. But the original review itself just goes on some weird tangents that seem to include a parent's view of the game; as though GT4 is bad for children in some ways. 👎 It's just a rather odd position to take.

Growing up, I did know some kids who had some weird rules about watching TV enforced by over-protective parents. These are the sort of parents who thought just because their kid saw someone get shot on Starsky & Hutch, the first thing their kid would do as a grown-up is go off and buy a gun, and hold up some liquor store or something. Whatever.

I think he's loony. Who would watch something as cool as the simulation pit crew change tires and then complain about it!!!???! :eek:boggled:

On the other hand, not being able to race a whole slew of cars is completely bogus and annoying. And not being able to watch a 2-player replay is (let's face it) a bit odd as well.

"Races feel more like a chore than fun" -- Agreed.

"Attempt at 'improving' the realism was what ruined the game's fun factor" -- Agreed.

"'Tire-changing-thing' is annoying" -- That could mean one of a few things. I don't know.

"Two-player-mode's split-screen replay and inability to save the replay are evidence of poor design decisions" -- Agreed.

"Cars that can be earned yet can't be raced are further evidence" -- Agreed.

"The game feels unfinished" -- Agreed.

"I love GT and would have waited longer for PD to get GT4 right" -- Agreed.

I mostly agree with the kid.

While most of his points are correct, and I was a bit disappointed with the removal of certain features, I don't think it ruined the game. I still find it a lot better than many other games. It's not as bad as when GT3 downsized so much to compensate for better graphics.

Why is he typing in my colour though?

He has a few good points - some of which I have made myself on this site - but is a smidge harsh. I've no clue what he means when he refers to the "tire-changing-thing" though.

The whole realism thing in GT4 ruins the game for some people, I get that. But for me, personally? I dig it. On the other hand, I was also disappointed by the removal of certain things..like in GT3 you could set the replay on random and it would switch from car to car for you more like a real race...with car fade-outs even.

...but then again, PD is always changing from game to game. There's stuff I dig in GT1 that wasn't in GT2 and stuff in GT2 that wasn't in 3...and so on...

I think watching those guys change my tires & insert fuel is so much more awesome than pulling up to a dead, empty bay and then sitting there like a 3-year old, while my pretend pit crew changed my tires! :dunce:
