GT5 does low downforce road cars on non racing tyres really well, but when you start adding downforce and/or racing tyres into the equation I think GT5 just goes further from reality with each car.

That's interesting, because this is the EXACT conclusion I came to a few weeks ago :dopey:

In GT5, details of the aerodynamic modeling (and how DF interacts with the car dynamically) are far too simplified and unrealistic. The racing tires are also very poorly modelled and almost seem like an after thought compared to the quality of feel/realism that was achieved particularly with some of the Sport tires.

From my experience with the Super GT cars in GT5, the cars (with full DF, R3's and good tune) have something like a 10 degree allowable slip angle for maximum lap times in mid-high speed corners....which is rather ludicrous for a car with that much aero and full blown slicks. Try throwing around a fast car in iRacing like that (especially the FW31 or even say the C6R) and you will end up in the barrier in a few corners more often than not  Cars the level of LMP or Group C and beyond just end up taking GT5 to an arcade-ish level in terms of realism, IMO..

With this said, I'm quite happy with GT5 particularly when the racing is kept on Sport tires, but for anything with a lot of DF and cornering speed I will turn to iRacing in the blink of an eye (particularly the FW31 @ Spa ) However, one thing I do like about GT5 is that it is much more convenient in terms of finding a quick casual race at anytime. With iRacing you either got to commit yourself to a series and/or building up your license credentials, or finding a random open session (or paying $3 to create a session) where you can spend say 2 hours practicing and qualifying only to be taken out at the first turn and then having to call it a night. So far most of my time spent in iRacing has just been in free run just working on my driving (which I find to be quite fun),.. as I find the the whole license thing to be a bit of a nuisance to me, although it would be nice to sign up for one of the many cool leagues out there.

So I got my PC up and running again and looking to "level" up in the next season and hopefully work towards an A license.

Currently C class with 4.5 SR and 3000 Irating (Road)
What would be a good car/series to focus on for next season? I plan to just race 1 series and focus on that for the best possible result and work on increasing my Irating. What are the requirements for leveling up again?

For anybody who wants to add me, my Iracing is Dion Holzheimer. 👍

Dion, you probably would want to race the V8 Supercar on a Monday Night (very good competition) if it's good racing your looking for. A few really really fast drivers in that series.

Grand AM is popular in the american time zone (so mornings for AUS/NZ) so that could be another series worth looking at if you're into long races and multiclass stuff.

You could also drive the Indycar in B Class from where your safety rating is which is also a great series. Very challenging, long races and a pit stop is required to get to the finish (fuel is the limiting factor).

Up to you mate, but there the series' i'd suggest. Of course i'll talk to you more about it on messenger or maybe even Teamspeak one day. 👍

All i can say is SIGN UP NOW! :)

Awsome racing at Okayama with the skippy! 64 drivers registered for the next event
it´s week 13 so no SR loss .

I just did that last race and had a great battle with Evan Maillard and Dave Gelink. The Skippy is just awesome around Okayama. I love it, can't get enough of it. I don't know what they changed on the skippy, but I used to hate it... Now I love it! 👍

yea i did a race aswell just now :) awsome!
started 8th, passed 2nd place on last lap in the lefthander that goes uphill.
He then turned into me so it got a big pile-up there lol.
I lost my position by probably around 0.00002 seconds ;)

I did a Schumacher/Barrichello ´10 ;) was great fun!

Question #1: Do you iRacing fans really think each track / car is worth the $12 they charge? :ouch:

It seems like it is mandatory to purchase these things to progress. I'm really worried bout their microtransaction model. But laser scanned tracks is very tempting + their attention to tire modeling seems crazy insane. I see their main programmer Dave Kelmmer (sorry cant spell) goes way back and is true old school as well

I've been debating biting the $12. I am sure I will be impressed. But I am afraid of becoming addicted....

Question #2: Do they discuss racing wheel setups on the forums often? That would be really cool engaging with a sim community dedicated to getting the best out of their setup. I am feeling drawn towards the PC due to the ability to make the ultimate combo (favorite racing wheel + favorite brake pedals + favorite shifter)

I think its absolutely worth it. They have all been captured incredibly well. I think as far as serious hobbies go the prices are quite reasonable especially for the level of quality here. As far as being mandatory, I guess that kinda depends on your playstyle and goals within the game. If you're set on a specific series you can be strategic about your purchases and avoid spending anything too crazy.

Yes you will become addicted!

As for your second question... I thought the setups people were posting here on GTPlanet were pretty nice... boy was I amazed when I started looking through the iRacing forums (not to take away from anyone here, but some of the guys are on a totally different level). Makes my Obutto and G27 look like children's toys.

I'm not at all impressed by iracing to be honest. I've only got the rookie download so I've only tried this limited version of the game but to be honest once my free one month is up that's the end of it for me. The overall cost involved just doesn't make sense with much more reasonable pay once and that's it games like Rfactor, LFS and NetKar Pro.

The free one month offer by the way for those who do want to try it is available to Indycar Nation members here:

http://www.indycar.com/

It doesn't cost anything to join so it's worth it just to try this out.

Question 1: YES :)
There are no other tracks like the ones in iRacing. Sure 2-3 are laserscanned for Rfactor but the similarities ends there. Okayama which we got for free is simply astonishing.

Then add the fact that they have given all the tracks even more fidelity from the pointcloud meaning even more bumps from from the real track is felt now.

Which in turn enhances the FFB even more. I´m blown away by Okayama really.

Question 2: Yes, there are many threads about whatever wheel you have and the best settings for just that wheel. They have a staff member working solely on FFB now which we will get in the next build i think.

Not only was the FFB above everything else before this build, due to the track getting more fidelity, its even better. And with the upcoming build it will get even better :) I can´t see how they possibly can make it any better now.

Basically the hardware section has all the answers you could ever need.

Quality costs money ;) That isn´t iRacing specific.

Guys I have 1 question about iRacing, have they ever talked about or announced multiple cars classes? Not mixed class racing, but more than 1 model car per class. In other words, are they gonna ever expand from spec racing?

I was just thinking about that the other day. Its not something I've seen mentioned specifically... but maybe someone whos been on iRacing longer would know?

Hey guys, whats your fastest lap on Philip Island with the Ford v8? I'm down to 1.35.9 which is about right for a v8 but not sure how quick it is in iRacing.

I've done a 1:31.9 in an official server, but I put up a server at Phillip Island in last build and did a 1:31.7. Not sure if the car has changed much since then but here is a setup... Such a hard track to get right and to set up for. So therefore the setup is no where near perfect but probably not a bad starting point.

They haven´t said a word yet which sucks bigtime.
I´ve rooted for the ALMS GT2 Class because i think it would be perfect but it seems that iRacing will go the spec series route for now...

That would be awsome! But I understand, they prefer to have a bit of everything rather than focus all of their resourses in just 1 class. makes sense from a business point of view, hopefully they'll start doing it in the near future. If they do it I'll guess they'll just start with Nascrap since it is the easiest one.

Love the street stock challenge at Charlotte but wish there weren't so many idiots racing. I'm coming second, 2 seconds behind the leader and reeling him in with 5 to go at about 2 tenths a lap, and some silly twit who had a clearly damaged car, loses control trying to keep up with him and slams into the wall and then flicks back out in front of me.... Seriously pissed off. I felt bad on the next race though. Was carving through traffic after being put on the rear of the grid and got loose in one of the corners slid up and hit the front of another car and then bounced back and hit another.

I really think for these kinds of events where you have inexperience and experience drivers, they should have small fields taking into account lap times. I don't mean to sound arrogant but in the race where I clobbered some guy, if they had been racing at my pace, I doubt I'd have made that mistake given I find it alot easier to pass somebody roughly going the same speed. They tend to be less jumpy.

If there are enough racers, it will split the session.

The people with the highest iR rating (which tells you how good you are and how safe you are) goes in the higher splits. Wreckers in the lower one.

Problem for guys like me even though i´ve gotten it up some is that i usually end up in the lower split. Which means i get punted off because people clearly doesn´t know there is a pedal to the right of the gaspedal...
So increasing the iR is impossible when that happens.
But just hang in there, if your consistent and have some luck and don´t get punted of or get caught in wrecks you will increase the iR and sooner or later move into the higher split.

Thats kinda odd for street stock racing. My experience with it has been one of the cleanest/safest in the game so far, but I guess on a bigger track like Charlotte things are a little different.

I don't know what license level you are at, but I think once you get to D and have an iRating it is supposed to create the splits using that (if i understood correctly).

Just put up a hosted session.

1 Lap shootouts at Okayama in the Williams. You line up on the grid, then do 1 lap. Winner starts last in the next shootout etc.

iRating is a number that decides how well you do in races. So if you start at the back and finish first you will get a massive increase in iRating.
Basically it´s a number set by the iRating from all the drivers in the session so if someone gains 100 in iRating, someone will also lose 100 in iRating.

Only 3 months left... Pretty good months aswell since it´s summer here so they will swoosh by like it´s nothing ;)

Can't wait for the Acura and Ford. They will be awesome. Interested in the New Nationwide purely to get a feel of the new tyre model.

But now would be a great time to buy iRacing, a few good deals going round plus 12 weeks away from the new tyre model which i'm sure will be fantastic considering how excited Dave Kaemmer sounds.

Thanks for the tip about the free one month man! I've been having a blast in the MX-5 at Summit Point!:dopey: I just won my first race by 9 seconds :sly: good experiences so far.

Only I don't like is the new Nationwide car, because it means its that hideous Impala they currently race and it'll replace the far better looking old car :(
