OMG!!! This afternoon during the last irl race of the season there was a giant crash involving Kenny Break.... Im looking for links right now but its real scary...

Lets hold a moment of scilence and pray for the man's life.... He aint dead but they dont kno yet...

Heh, that's what you get for selling your brain, and racing in Tony George's joke of a race series wreckfest.

Get well Kenny, if you're still alive.

Luckily for the IRL people, the stands were empty, as usual, so there are no spectator injuries.

Don't take the IRL reports for gospel, though. They're known to dumb down things a lot, to make it sound better than it does. Kenny's not doing that good... I doubt he's even conscious at the moment.

Thx punkRock sry i was posting
I agre whit u about open wheel on ovals.... Whe lost Greg Moore cuz of that... Lets just stay on our race tracks... their way more fun and way less boring.

And safer too

The following is from Autosport.com:

Kenny Brack, the 1998 IRL champion and 1999 Indianapolis 500 winner is reported to have suffered multiple fractures in a violent accident on the 188th lap of the Chevy 500 at Texas Motor Speedway - the final round of this year's IRL IndyCar Series, according to the Reuters news agency.

The Swede, driving for Team Rahal, made contact with Tomas Scheckter's G-Force Toyota on the back straight at over 200mph as the pair fought over third place. The two cars locked wheels and Brack was launched into the air. His car flipped into the safety fencing and broke apart before rolling back down the track.

Scheckter was unharmed in the crash, but Brack had to be removed from his car and was taken to the circuit's medical centre where he was said to be awake and alert, before being airlifted to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. Brack's condition is considered serious but stable.

“Brack was cracking jokes with (wife) Anita while in the Texas Motor Speedway Infield care centre," said Brack's team manager Steve Dickson.

The race was stopped six laps early to muted celebrations. Gil de Ferran won the race, his last before heading into retirement, while Scott Dixon won the championship by finishing runner-up. Britain's Dan Wheldon finished third.

PunkRock: It's not really just oval racing for open wheelers though. There have been some massive accidents at ovals from which the drivers have been reasonably unharmed - look at Mario Andretti's Indy testing shunt for an example. The problems arise when the cars get airborne, and the aerodynamic platform is destroyed.

Mr Devil: Wasn't Greg Moore killed at Laguna Seca?

Greg Moore was killed at an oval think in florida... he was running in the pack and got to some bad air... lost control at the exit of the turn. did some rolls and hit head first (litterally head first) the infield wall at incredible speeds... It was a great loss he was a great driver...

The guy that died at Laguna Seca was.... well im not sure but he hit the wall just before the corkscrew (lost brakes) and did a flip and a half to land on the top of the car

The smililarities are scary...
Cuz open wheelers dont have roofs 2 pilots died right there....

If two cars touch wheels at 200+ mph, it's obvious they'll get airborne. It's almost like they're jumping over each other (Christian Fittipaldi, Monza 1993, or Gilles Villeneuve at Zolder, for examples) It doesn't help that the IRL cars seem to have an inherent design flaw that cause them to "fly" when the airflow changes over the wings, a bit like the 1999 Mercedes CLR. Well, not exactly, but you get what i mean.

I find it sickening that no one cared much about the crash over there in Texas. The race report made no mention of it, Gil de Ferran never even said a thing about it, same thing for Tony George and Scott Dixon. Idiots.

i noticed that and had a little chuckle. then stopped because kenny is in serious trouble. i knew that someday the irl would have a big crash like this and someone wil get hurt or die. even though i hate the IRL with every gram of my body, i dont want to see people getting hurt, espically a driver that i like (kenny was awesome in champcars)

get well soon Kenny

i saw some footage of it on the ITV1 Evening News(english tv channel news). ****ING HELL THAT CRASH WAS ****ING MASSIVE:eek:      They said he was in hospital with a broken back, two broken ankles, breastbone and adnother broken bone somewhere.the main thing is Kenny's ok. best wishes kenny and get well soon. 👍

Yes, Kenny's OK, in only the way that someone with "a broken back, two broken ankles, breastbone and adnother broken bone somewhere" can be!

Make no mistake, this guy is seriously unwell.

but lately though the safety in american open wheel racing has improved dramatically. still there is some work to be done.

but the thing is, no matter what racing series, there is always a chance that a driver would die. even from go-karts. while safety should always be improved, it will never be 100% because motorsport can throw up some uncanny circumstances

From what I heard at at 8.00am 15th GMT time, he had just had a second operation on his lower back, the first having been on his thigh and both his ankles.

Sounds like he should survive because if his condition was really life-threatening they would have immediately operated on his back.

He could move his legs and toes so it's sounding much better than I expected.

Nice double post. ;)

Anyway, let's get this back on topic. I just watched the video of the crash. Wow...nasty stuff.

Luckily for the IRL people, the stands were empty, as usual, so there are no spectator injuries.

first off the speedway usually does not open all the stands cause it would'nt be economical to have spectators strewn around the track and then having to open more of the bathrooms and vending facilities. so instead they just allow the main stands in the front stretch to be occupied, and granted even those sections were not filled to capacity but they were close.

Don't take the IRL reports for gospel, though. They're known to dumb down things a lot, to make it sound better than it does.

i could say the same about the CART series, fact is almost every series does it.

Durring the actuall airing of the race many people did make numerous remarks towards the accident and in hope of Kenny being alright, though they did not make any assumptions as to his condition. though i did find them trying to stray away from saying too mucha about it.

when i saw it all happen i thought he was either dead or had spinal cord injuries, luckally he should be ok though from what i have heard.

Indeed, there was quite a lot of comment from the drivers after the event.

He should make a full recovery, but there is some doubt that he will be able to return to professional racing.

It was quite a shocking accident - I think the thing that saved him was there there was no direct point of impact, and that much of the energy of the accident was disappated with the car spinning in multiple smaller impacts, rather than just one big hit.

Nasty business. Schekter does seem to have a talent for getting involved in these things (not that I'm implying any fault - I haven't seen enough footage of the accident).

NO there were no spectators

but that accident reminded me of an F1 crash in 2001 at the Australian gp where unfortuately graham beverage, a track marshall was killed when jacues villenurve's car rammed the back of ralfs car and hit the fence like kenny, but not as high speed.

no matter what series you barrack for, you dont like to see a driver, marshall, anyone get hurt

get well soon Kenny
