Is PCARS as Good as GT6?

Am I right in saying that PCARS doesn't have proper triple screen support and GT5/6 do?

By proper, I mean multiview, where angled side monitors are given compensation so as to not have a distorted image. Considering that it apparently took one guy only four days to implement a comprehensive multiview setup in Assetto Corsa, it is pretty shameful if the pc version of PCARS is without it.

I have seen quite a few pictures online of people running multiple screens, not sure how it's working for them

The big thing like I said is whether or not the angles can be compensated for.

Driving in a straight line it's not so bad, but when cornering it's a horrible and almost nauseating thing to be dividing one's view between undistorted (centre) and distorted (left/right) screens.

I just put in about 6 hours into the Xbox version, and while it's not perfect, the game is nowhere near as bad as some people said. I got my controls sorted out now and while it's not as precise as the wheel, it's still good enough that I can drive and enjoy the experience. Have to knock the AI down 10% from driving with the wheel though. Th graphics look good on Xbox, there are some occasional stuttering and frame tearing but overall not bad. Multiplayer works pretty much like on PC version, I've discovered. There is join in progress, flags and penalties and stuff, just can't pick and choose lobbies on Xbox yet. Anyway, it's just the beginning and soon enough SMS will fix some of the bugs, game will be even better. I'm pretty pleased to actually have bought it on Xbox, thought it will be way worse. Now I have something to do on the console other than watch Netflix all the time :)

For me personally I'm enjoying PCARS over GT6 even with the bugs. I rarely have the time to go online so that side of it doesn't bother me. I'm just enjoying the driving whether it be weekend races or solo time trials. Yes the cars and handling can be twitchy at first but that all comes down to retraining the brain how to handle a new game with a new driving/physics model. The liked the physics feel of GT6 however I'm loving the feel of the PCARS physics more. I'm just pi**ed that I sold my Fanatec CSR a few months ago so now I have to wait until mid June for a Thrustmaster T300. Hopefully this time around I'll get a T300 that isn't faulty but that's another story.

Project CARS is way way better than GT6.

Around the time of GT5's release I moved over to PC sims (mainly iRacing) as I was so disappointed with GT after playing it since GT1. I bought GT6 and was still disappointed. So I don't have a PS4 and don't intend to buy one either so there'll be no GT7 for me, even if I felt inclined to buy it.

The two things I really really miss in GT are decent AI and configurable race weekends. Project CARS has both. GT has neither and I don't have confidence in PD to provide either. The current GT AI can't really be classed as AI to be honest, it is that bad. I get the impression that PD are not interested in implementing it properly. Sure, Project CARS AI isn't perfect either but at least SMS tried and have done a pretty good job with it.

So, I'm delighted that Project CARS is available for the consoles so you guys with only a console can get to experience the level of racing game we've been able to experience on PCs for a long time. I see Project CARS as a good stepping stone to playing sims like iRacing and Assetto Corsa for those who want to move to the PC.

No doubt Project CARS 2 and GT7 will appear about the same time and I fully expect Project CARS 2 to be way way better than GT7 on every front other than car count. The best thing about GT is GTPlanet which is why I'm still here! The fact that Project CARS has an in game car skin with GTPlanet plastered all over it and that no GT games do says a huge amount.

Would you recommend iRacing for the price it is at? I need a new PC to play it, I just have a T300 and PS4 for now.
I've always wanted to get into iRacing but the cost puts me off a little.
Plus, are there plenty of online racing races for touring cars, GT3, open wheel etc?

Oh it feels sooo good on a CSR ;)

iRacing can get expensive but it is worth it (IMHO) - there are also plenty of promotions for the subscription and content which make it much cheaper than it looks at first. There is excellent drop-in online racing that cannot be found on any other game unless you're running in a league (due to their rating systems). There is plenty of racing for open wheel cars and GT3. No touring cars in the service at the moment (although there are cars like the MX-5, Jetta, Solstice, Cadillac). To avoid taking this thread off topic PM me if you have any questions or take a look at/post in the iRacing forum here (https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/board/iracing.263/).

It's safe to say project cars was over-hyped beyond belief in my opinion. The fact people want to compare it to GT6 on 8+yr old hardware shows an inferiority complex by the developers. No excuses once GT7 is out equal generation, equipment.

I think you might be misinterpreting the values against which they are being compared.

I don't think anyone is expecting GT6 on PS3 to match anything on PC or PS4 for hardware limited features, like graphic fidelity etc...

but you can compare on gameplay and philosophy of approach.

My first big surprises playing PCARS were...

Unmapping the windscreen wipers, because in GT you can only turn them on / off when you don't need them (very realistic). In PCARS they are essential (as in real life)

My first race start: I didn't know you could jump start, got an instant drive through penalty on my first race.

To me though these things aren't annoying, they are brilliant. I haven't felt so immersed in any computer game since I started playing them in 1981 :D

It's cheap enough to get in the first time and the only way you'll know is if you try it. I couldn't get into it for various reasons. Graphics are old school, environments feel rather lifeless, I didn't really feel any sense of community etc. For me though the biggest weakness was the tire model and how easy it was to go over the edge of grip. The transition from grip to little grip to no grip is very fast and didn't seem very realistic to me. It's worth a try though, it might just suit you and it's quite popular among the sim racing crowd because in terms of organized online racing it just can't be beat.

Define over-hyped.

I'm entitled to my opinion, as long I'm being respectful.

I gotta ask.

How does our behaviour reflect the developers' mental state?

That's like saying my customers' behaviour is reflecting my mental state - and I'll be damned if that was the case :scared:

That aside, I partially agree with you. One shouldn't compare hardware dependent features like graphics, but there are a lot of design choices to consider, like GT's notorious quantity over quality approach. Stuff like that is fair game, I think.

You ought to be prepared to have it challenged, though. Especially when sharing it on a public discussion board, don't you think?

Project Cars is gorgeous. You're driving down the track with the sky and clouds above you. You see the shadows of clouds on the track. Light comes through the clouds in parts of the track. The weather variations are all beautiful. The beauty of this game makes is so much more immersive.

When you're driving out in the open and you see an Ariel Atom in front of you. You see the heat from it's exhaust. You see all the suspension and parts moving around. It's just astonishing how detailed it all is.

All that and you can feel it. With a T300 it's the best game I've ever played on a console. And the sounds, a Clark Synthesis TST 209 takes this game to an even higher level. I love what they've done so far and am excited for what's coming next.

I like the weather: Can't see a thing through the spray other than a hazy running light and hearing the rain hitting the cockpit.

My personal opinion, I've owned all 6 gt games and loved 1 and 2, loved 3 and 4, was okay with 5 and 6. I was not a supporter of pcars, so I would consider myself unbiased. Also, I know very little about physics and which is better. But I had absolutely so much more fun "tinkering" with the Renault Clio cup car. I never had the same lever of fun when on gt series...

With that in mind, I will still get gt7 just because there is a part of me that still hopes for a better game, and I do love the car collecting

I think we can all agree that driving wise the game is simply breathtaking. Outside of that though there is a ton to be desired from the UI, car-selection, career, features and online. However, the good thing is that this is the first iteration of a new IP. The future looks bright and if all you want from a sim is a good drive pCARS can offer it. 👍

When your driving in the rain you can see the reflections in the puddles of the trees, clouds and trackside structures.
That's a lot of processing just to hype your driving experience. Plus, this is their first venture without a conglomerate to oversee their fortune in the gaming world. There is enough details within the game that has already been said above too see that Project Cars is on the right road to succeed.
In my opinion this will greatly introduce a new format for racing/driving titles on today's consoles. I hope they sell loads.

I think PD and SMS should have a meeting.

PD - Ok guys, online, replays, and UI works like this....
SMS- look what we have done with AI, physics (tuning and telemetry included), and FFB...

It would be perfet for everyone...
I don't think that the AI is good on Project Cars...
