They won a free holiday, a really expensive steering wheel and a red t-shirt for playing a video game they enjoy, that's not exploitation.
I used to be of this mindset, but after reading Andrew Brooks’ account of one of the events in Japan, these events sound worse than most business trips. If you take a 16 hour flight to a country for 3-4 days, and have no actual time for sightseeing, that’s not a holiday.

Yea but that’s when you come out of pocket a bit and extend your stay to make it a holiday

I don’t understand your point. Having to pay to extend your stay isn’t a “prize” for anything.

Neither is it’s PD’s job to pay your way to a location for anything other than the agreed upon reason your even there. It seems that hosting these live events “costs” them money, and therefore by extension, is bad business. I’m sure PD’s CFO would look at the extra 40K it would cost to keep everyone there an extra day and deny that request immediately upon arrival

So these finalists should have to pay for their own flights and hotels because a multi-million dollar company is putting on a show?
I still don’t understand what your point is. Either the players have to pay extra to make this a vacation, otherwise it’s not a vacation. Which means if you’re going to fly someone to another country and have their time completely booked, they need to be compensated accordingly.

Maybe I missed it, but does PD market these events as an “all expense paid holiday”?

If they do, then I can sort of understand the gripe. But if it’s not marketed as such, then there’s zero legs for anyone to stand on who feel they should be allocated time for sightseeing

Yes, and as you're already out there, could 'easily' make it a holiday by paying a little extra to extend it. It's an option anyway, depending on your situation. I'd be tempted too having already flown half way around the world, jetlag and all the ballache that comes with airports.

Idk. I think most of the contestants know exactly what they’re signing up for. I think it’s the vocal minority who are trying to make esports into something it’s not, and most likely never will be. This whole thing in a way, reeks of the whole equal pay for women’s sports argument. To anyone with a brain, it will never make sense. Like women’s sports, 95% of esports will never bring in the revenue to justify the prize money or salaries. As others have correctly stated, these WT events are more for promotional purposes than anything.

The harsh reality with esports, is in the end these events are filled with an overwhelming amount of nerds playing video games. It’s not appeasing to the eye, nor is it sexy. No one but the hardest of hardcore fans care. And sim racing is but an even smaller subset of esports.

I think you lose your right to call anyone a nerd when you’re posting on a gaming website.

And how this turned in to a rant about women’s sports is beyond me.

Never once did I exclude myself from the nerd category 😂

And all I was doing was eEquating the fallacies of this argument, to that of the women sports argument
