It's the same as neck braces. I wore one when I was younger, just to stop any neck strain. But I got to a point where my neck was strong enough to handle the weight of the helmet and cornering forces and decided to drop it. It makes moving you head a little easier, and I find that to we worth a few tenths over a race.

Ah, sun. Something the UK lacks!

 👍

ASN Canada FIA mandates neckbraces, across the board. No exceptions. :(

wow, didn't know that. Is that for all classes?

Every single karting class, except as permitted on a helmet-to-helmet case:

This one, for example, would likely be exempt.

Edit: costs $700

Again, I have no neck brace. However, I do have a rib gard

Here are some plans on a helmet design; going to get my helmet painted. What do you guys think?

EDIT: Here's what it would look like with the parts grey (I know it's half-🤬 but couldn't be bothered with pixlr too much. I'll try and recolour it on paint.net).

I'm never going to have my helmet painted, one simple reason.

Helmet Paint : Cost £350 +
Time Gain: 0.00 seconds.

3 New sets of tyres: Cost £360
Time gain: up to a whole second..

Also less colours you use, cheaper the total cost....

I completely forgot to post these from last year. My friend captured some great battles with his gopro.

I'm in the CRG, Kart #99 with the white helmet.

I missed the start of this race (was looking the other way!), but we went on to have an epic wheel-to-wheel battle towards the end. I pulled a Kobayashi on driver #13 on the last corner.

Another fun battle at the start of this video:

If you want me to be brutally honest, I think the purple and blue clash. If the purple was white then I would prefer it, but then again it's not for me; so whatever you prefer.

Well, this weekend was awesome.

I really enjoyed it, even though we didn't have a kart stand, the chain fell off twice, a rear wheel came off, and I was not exactly anywhere near the pace.

Edit: we also broke a spark plug. Has anyone else ever broken a spark plug on a kart?

Good point, and for this reason I'm only going to be painting it when I have a bit of spare cash.

Thanks for your opinion, really helpful 👍 . I knew the blue and purple would probably clashed if I used those two colours alone but that's why I added some white and gold to make it look a bit better.

Maybe the purple areas in grey or red would be better?

Grey would be beautiful, I must say. :)

Also, what's your editing software? I think I could show you how to smooth out those lines.

I was using Pixlr, which if interested can be checked out here.

Also, did you get banned the other day? I was wondering why I saw banned next to your GTP name  . Anyways, off to change the purple areas to grey and red (will edit the original post, save you guys some scrolling :sly: )

Alright, I used pixlr for a while, but I got GIMP 2.0; it offers a bunch of tools to make the lines smoother. Don't worry, pixlr doesn't offer that, as far as I know, so you can't change anything with that.

Its ok, I'll have a look later

Taking a while to get a quote for my helmet; wondering if I should scrap getting my helmet painted and customize it through stickers instead.

Well, that's a free option...

Setup/driving questions:

1: should I ever hear tire squeal? (I think it's slightly too much oversteer)
2: is slight lock-up faster? (Braking hard on entry to a very tight corner, trail-braking)
3: should I widen/soften the rear for better handling (president of the kart club suggested it, but, the fastest guy in my class is running the same track width?)

1) Yes. Tire squeal is fine.
2) Depends on the corner. If it's a relatively tight turn, yes. But you might want to rub the throttle a little to keep the rear axle spinning. On a relatively fast, sweeping corner, you want to make sure you're not killing all your momentum.
3) Try and do a couple laps behind the fastest guy in practice. Find out where he's faster than you. Think to yourself "what do I need to go faster in that corner?" (ie front grip on entry, rear grip on exit, etc.) Adjust the set up based on that. Setting up a go kart is more of an art than a science. Don't be afraid to ask more experienced people what changed they would suggest making.

I wouldn't change the set up and just focus on your driving if you're just getting (back) into karting.

I've been karting for 8 years, but, I've not owned my own kart yet. The guys who are changing their setups, tire pressures, etc. Are way faster. I'm hearing that my driving line's good, but I can't think of where I'm losing corner speed, but, in the sharp corners I can't keep pace, and in the fast corners I'm faster. :scared: Problem is, there're only three fast corners, and the rest are pretty sharp hairpins.

Tire pressures you want to ask around what the best hot pressure is for your track. Go out, drive and get the tires up to temp, come in then IMMEDIATELY take the pressure and drop it down to what was recommended to you.

It sounds like you might be a little wide in the rear or might need to take out some caster.

What rear axle do you have ? Soft , medium of hard ?

Well, I'm running 48" rear track width, most people are running 49.5". It would suck to run 47" or such a lunatic setup.

Is there an easy way to find out? Diameter of axle?

On the most axles are characters aa says it is soft/soft AB says soft/medium bb says medium/medium bc says medium/hard cc says hard/hard

Alright boys,

Hopefully soon I will be driving in the S2 class. Hopefully next month by the earliest. That's my update.

Kol, you crazy, why don't you join the conversation more often?

I'll check in the morning, thanks!!!

I had a pretty good club meet on the weekend. Managed to get 5th (from 9) in a lower weight class. Got my PB lap aswell. Can't wait for next weekend when I go to a different track (for the first time) but I will be bak in my weight class where I am not giving the opposition 13kg :D

Wow! 13 kg. Is a lot! I'm 10 lb. Overweight in my class, and thought it was bad.

Also, only 9 people in a class? Wow, the fact I'm racing against 30 karts in my class... It seems ever more exciting now.
