Yeah the loading times were around 20 seconds in the gamescom demo, so if you don´t install the game I think the loading times will be over 1 minute...

As I bought Tekken6, I thougt WTF? over 1 minute loading time for one fight... but then after the full installation it took less than 10 seconds now to load a fight... Might be the same with GT...

A Blu-Ray disc on one layer is 25Gb and Dual Layer is 50Gb the max so far is 400Gb with 16 layers

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/32567/PS3-will-support-400GB-Blu-ray-discs

Found this seems intresting:

"Pioneer has gone all storage crazy on us by coming up with a Blu-ray disc that is capable of holding 400GB of information.

This disc uses 16 layers to hold all the information at 25GB per stack, compared to the dual layer 50GB discs that we see in Blockbuster but never rent because the normal DVD is, well, cheaper.

The process of manufacturing such a disc is difficult, as the layers used often want to all be heard at once, so interference is common.

But by using techniques from the DVD manufacturing process, Pioneer has apparently solved the problem.

Backwards

According to the Japanese company: "Since the optical specifications of the objective lens…are the same as those for the existing BD discs, it is possible to maintain compatibility between the new 16-layer optical disc and the BD discs."

So this means you can probably pop one of these big-boys into your newly purchased Blu-ray player and still access all the large space optical goodness when released.

Pioneer has promised more information on the new technology at the Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage 2008, which sounds thrilling, on the 13 July."

There is now a 600Gb disc called HVD (Holographic Versatile Disc)

More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_Versatile_Disc

I believe the HVD will feature compacities of 500GB to 10TB. Sony has plans to begin using 1TB HVDs in 2019. Interesting time frame. All Playstation system have been out for 6 years before the next gen system was released. That puts the PS4 at 2012/2013 and the PS5 around 2018/2019. The Current Playstation cannot read more than two or three layers 'cause the laser in it isn't powerful enough. I would suspect that the PS4 will feature a full strength blu-ray laser to support the maximum capcitiy disks, better graphics cards, more memory and a better version of the Cell. PS5 looks like it'll be Holographic.

Isn't Gran Turismo 5 on a dual-layered BluRay Disc?

If so, that's 54GB of data that Kaz is implying can play seamlessly with only a 10GB install?!?

That makes no sense whatsoever!

Very little data will have to be used on a regular basis. On top of that I believe that there has to be two versions of the game on the same disk(2D and 3D). So each version of the game is actually around 25 gigs.

Great news! 10 gigs of HDD installation, that means faster loading speeds. Good thing I have a 500gig 7200 rpm HDD ;)

Same here...

I hope I can put a 160gb hdd (with windows installed since it's from my old broken laptop) in my ps3 and format it from the xmb...

Of course you can. That's what I did before. Swapped out the 60gb for a 80gb straight from a laptop, then a 120gb straight from another laptop, then finally bought a 320gb drive.

Nice! GT5 will be on a multi-layer disc. I think it will join only two other games on Dual Layer Blu-rays. The other two that I could think of are God of War 3 and Heavy Rain (only so large 'cause of the mulitple story lines....although, HR is more of a choose-your-own-adventure game than anything else, but it's still big.)

MGS4 is also on Dual Layer at 33Gigs thanks to the cutscenes.

A 10 Gb install seems reasonable, I'll spend most of my gaming time with GT5, so the exchange (give disk space to obtain faster loading times) looks fair.

3D is just a different way of rendering the same image you'd get with 2D, it wouldn't take up but a fraction of the disk space since it's just an algorithm.

I remember a Sony exec at E3 this year talking about how the Blu ray disk would allow for the extra capacity to store 3d and 2d versions of a game on the same disk. Maybe he did not know what he was talking about and will indeed be accomplished with a different rendering instruction set.

The 3d version is likely a few MB in size. Someone pointed it out some time ago that the games on PSN that were "enabled" for 3d, did so by downloading a patch that was small in size.

Ok, it's just a separate rendering algorithm then. Then wow. What in the Jiminey Snickets is all that data being used for? Can't wait to find out.

Yeah, 2D and 3D Rendering Algorithms, few MB in size each (if that, it's just calculations after all), can both fit on the disk, it's just a bit of a weird wording choice.

High Polygon models, not only for the cars but also for the tracks, buildings, scenery, etc. can take up quite a bit of space, aswell as texture files, light maps and reflection maps, along with any other myriad of files required to make this game look as beautiful as possible take up quite a bit of space very fast.

From,
Chris.

IIf there is 10gb installiation. it will be dual layered disk for sure.Coz you will install almost half size of the disk. God of war 3 dual layered MGs4 too.GT5 has too many contents. it must be 50gb.

If it is 50gb, and PD say they have nearly filled up the disc....then wow, that is ALOT of content!

Kaz-san is Tweeting again... translations anyone?
The original design can make a car I love. RT @ hyde_rise: @ Kaz_Yamauchi fictional SUPER GT race cars I want to make specifications.

My translation, might contain errors.

I'd like you to create fictional SUPER-GT spec racing cars.
I too love creating original car designs.

Will it be possible to select whether to install or not the game? Also, if the game is not installed will online features be affected?
I strongly recommend installing. You could probably say it's a must.

I'd like you to update soon the gran-turismo.com GT Blog. I want to read your blog!!
True. I should at least finish the story on the Nurburgring 24 hours race. I'm busy by the minute.
