It may be pointless, but not when it comes to marketing. You know what they say, speed sells. And if your faster than your rivals, rich people will respond by playing that game, after buying the car, against their rich friends. It may be ego-stroking, yes. But when it makes a profit, it works.

Now now, let's not go that way yet, let Koenigsegg do their own game for a while longer. Doing an offroad car is something Porsche and Bentley are doing/going to do. Maybe one day, but not right now.

Yeah but given how rather, unconvential Koenigsegg seems I would love them to do like an insane version of a Ford SVT Raptor.

This, to me is not vastly different from their other cars yet.

i swear, if any other company does something so pointless as this i will be frustrated. I don't have anything against Koenigsegg doing this, but by god, its nothing but 'my car is faster than yours :P'.

I don't see any problems with that. People who can afford such cars are all about status and what not, so being able to say "My car is the fastest production car in the world" is something these people get a semi from.

Also, having the title for the fastest production car in the world has incredibly marketing value.

I dunno, it is to me. Instead of just competing in the Hypercar segment, they're now competing in the 'Luxury Hypercar' market segment. So, instead of competing with Pagani and whatnot, they're competing with Bugatti.

Well, I think...

Yeah but a luxury hypercar is a hypercar still.

Body style is not vastly different, intended function is not very different.

Maybe I'm a bit unconventional, but a mental offroad buggy/truck/something would interest me rather than a Jeremy Clarkson-esque MORE POWER.

EDIT: Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate the engineering in it, but to me it's really quite pointless in a road-car. I'd prefer something more oddball.

EDIT 2: Even a proper stationwagon would be more interesting than yet another high performance coupe that will probably rarely ever get over 180km/h by its actual owners.

I can understand that, it would be interesting to see how would Koenigsegg tackle a SUV project.

Well, at least it's more different than the Agera RS (it's a crazier Agera, not like that hasn't been done before right?), if anything. The Regera covers a well-known class, but with a different flair to it.

That last sentence hit the nail on the head. You can get quite the media exposure if you get a speed record. It is a very powerful marketing tool.

The closest Koenigsegg came to something truly different was when they collaborated in the early NLV Quant prototype:

Can someone explain how the no gearbox thing works? I think a Prius does this but don't know how either?

I might be alone with this opinion, but I think it would look much better with a spoiler.
Cars with such a long rear end need a spoiler.
The spoiler is retractable:

Plus, interesting to see the Rimac gets a major contribution to this car. Considering their previous work.

Wait. Am i missing something here?

I was making a quick gag based on your Fifth Gear reference and the transmission of the Regera. It was just that, really.

What did Rimac do previously, may I ask?

No i mean the no gear thing. What the transmission Regera actually use?

Rimac Concept One. Look on google.

No one can really tell. Check Jalopnik's article on the car, they speak a bit about it. The car does not have a third pedal, it might be a CVT-esque transmission. But I don't want to talk rubbish, if anyone can clarify, go right ahead.

For those wondering, this is the Concept One that Rimac did:

From what I can gather, it takes off from a standstill under electric power and when it hits 30mph, the engine kicks in.

The gearbox is actually a hydraulic clutch, which saves 440 pounds of weight over a dual clutch gearbox.

It'll almost behave like a CVT, but with some tweaks.

Upshot to all this is no shifting gears, which means very quick acceleration.

I found one stat to be pretty nuts, 93 to 155mph in 3.2 seconds.

I'd like a fixed wing more (just from an optical standpoint, can't comment on the actual aerodynamics of course), but it looks way better than it seemed from the render anyway. I really like that rear end, it has something '60's american in it. The only thing ruining the design a bit for me is the roofline. Overall the car has some really nice curves, but the roof looks out of place.

Gotta say, it's growing on me quite quickly. Hopefully the car configuration tool will be up soon so I can fiddle around with different color schemes 👍

@Vic Reign93 so if I'm in the car, I won't feel it changing gear ever? (from 30 to 248) it'll just rev till top speed?
Up to 30 Mph the hydraulic clutch will "slip" so that the very long gear ratio doesn't stall the engine.
Torque is mostly provided by the E-motors.

Above 30 Mph the hydraulic clutch "locks" and the engine / wheel speed ratio is fixed (30 Mph is ~1000 rpm).

You probably won't feel much as the Hydraulic clutch locks up because the torque from the ICE will be negligible compared to the 3 E-motors.

It's not a CVT, it's the Honda Accord Hybrid transmission with added Sport Hybrid SH-AWD.
