About mods:

We are totally aware of the importance of modding and its contribution to the success of Assetto Corsa.
It's a great way for new talents to emerge, for the community to "suggest" new directions and/or simply to make a product richer. It is not a coincidence that some of the best guys in this community are now contributing with us to the evolution of the software.

However, for ACC this element will have to be put in stand-by mode for a series of reasons. The most important one is that we have given ourselves an enormous task of rebuilding, once again our software from (almost) scratch. In a world where pretty much every product you see on the market in simracing is an evolution of games that have been on the market 10-15 years ago, our approach is to get a big axe and reset things to (almost) zero before starting with a new project, ACC is no exception.

In this case the task is rendered more complex by the fact that we are using, for the first time a third party engine that we did not design ourselves and the truth is, given the amount of time we have available to deliver ACC to the public, we have more than enough on our hands trying to figure out how to use the engine effectively to also think about how to make the platform moddable.

As you can imagine, this has been source of endless discussions in the last year and half as every decision comes with pros and cons, there is going to be pain no matter what your final call will be. It goes without saying that we believe we made the right call even if that means loosing the huge benefits of a moddable platform.

So to recap, there will be no action from our side regarding modding, both in the direction of promoting nor offering any kind of forum support for it as in the opposite direction, we have no intent to stop it from happening if some smart guy figure out how to do it.

Well that's disappointing, but I can see where they're getting at. Like others have said, people will no doubt crack this in no time at all. As long as KS doesn't interfere with "non-official" modding all is not lost.

Not surprised by them not supporting mods for this type of game. It sounds like a closed streamlined system. But at the same time they are not trying to prevent mods either in case someone figures out how to make them for this game. I guess its a good middle ground for both sides (devs and gamers).

As long as KS doesn't interfere with "non-official" modding all is not lost.
Exactly. And this is pretty much how it works for most games out there I would say, where devs don't promote (code support for) modding or stop modding from happening.

But you can bet that they sit back and happily watch modders go to work on their game (as long as it doesn't affect copyrights and security measures), since mods add to the content, longevity and sales.

I'm not as game savvy as some of you guys so I ask, are there games out there with the UE engine that have been successfully modded on a widespread basis? Any that involved the kinds of very complicated physics calculations I assume will be inherent in ACC?

I think Gravel is an interesting game to look at. It just came out and is on the UE 4. According to ACG's review it also has some simulation aspects to it. But its overall an arcade game.

are there games out there with the UE engine that have been successfully modded on a widespread basis?

I'm probably no more savvy than yourself, though I do know there's modded UE games out there. While a totally different genre of game, I believe Ark Survival is supposed to have a decent number of mods and that uses UE4. Plus I saw this positive quote from one of the devs of that game while doing some googling:

"UE4 has been designed with modding in mind. As such, anyone can access the complete UE4 source code, easy-to-use tools, tutorials and documentation for free."

I guess it won't be that hard for some modders? Perhaps just needing to learn about how UE4 works if they haven't used it before?

I would say that this confirms console versions:
Lord Kunos
so for ACC we'd have to redo it from scratch.. plus we're trying to move away from the mouse centric UI style we had in AC in order to better map to both console, cockpit and VR user interactions.. from this point of view, AC style Apps would also need a major re thinking.. and, again, time is not on our side for ACC.

It's going to be a miracle if I can make it to early release without getting myself banned over at the official forums. The sheer stupidity of some people over there - it's astounding. Hopefully, I will stay cool and level-headed...just ignore the forum altogether.

Yes the imaginations are running wild.
I've seen posts wanting yearly releases like call of duty, many demanding road cars and Nurburgring, and one that said ACC should only cater to die hards by attaching a $200/year membership to play.
I read alot, but other than the Rfactor2 discussion don't really type much.

I've always kinda hated the AC forum, there's so much cognitive bias and blowing of sunshine up asses that's it's pretty pathetic. The new ACC forum is just a mess, dozens of threads talking about things and asking for things or about things from a game that doesn't even exist yet, plus the large mass of people whinging that the new game isn't custom tailored to their preferences. I mean, I'm no GT3 fan but I'm massively excited for what's to come and see so many positives from all of this news.

You guys know what I mean, for sure... I haven't seen a couple of those ridiculous posts @Corsa - thank god.. You made the key point Brandon. There isn't one of us who knows exactly what ACC is going to be. So how can you complain?! And the non-stop whining about mods...ugh. Hey, you guys know me. I love mods. I probably have an unhealthy number of mods for AC, but can we just wait for Kunos to reveal what is or isn't happen? What is or isn't going to be in ACC? Ugh...

I saw one Muppet on there suggest anyone who thinks 10 tracks isn't plenty is an unemployed beach bum. Official series or not, 10 tracks is a tiny number. That will surely only appeal to the hardcore. I'm not bitching about this, it is what it is, but its also a fact. Casuals will surely not pay full price for 10 tracks. I'm looking forward to it but 10 tracks has me wondering if it's a day one buy or a 6 month wait.

Exactly. Anyone who disagrees with me must be insulted and called names. Totally mature behavior.

Probably a lot of split opinions on this one. I'm no GT3 fan and I'm bored to death with half the tracks that will be included but for whatever reason none of that concerns me in the slightest and I'll be getting in on day one of early access for sure. I guess for me it's more about what all this represents for the future and not just this one specific title, and what I see is very exciting and shows a lot of promise for the future of not just AC but sim racing in general. Sim racing has been in such a rut for the last several years and I genuinely hope that UE4 can break it out of that rut.

In effect they are doing a PD style reboot, hoping loyal fans will overlook the smaller variety and remain loyal by being wowed by the graphics, online rating aystem and consistent physics. GTS seems to be closing in on GT6 figures already so there may be some merit to that position. Hopefully the switch to the U4 engine means another reboot won't be necessary in a couple of years and they can pile on the content with the next title (assuming there is one).

I am looking forward to what ACC is going to be. I am seeing it as a focused game on one serie, Blancpain, with superior driving, superior graphic. I think it will be different from what we have recently seen which is a little bit of this and a little bit of that and we, the players, have to make it work. ACC in my view will be a concentrated but very complete experience.
Even though gt3 are not my favorite cars and we, of course, are already familiar with the tracks, the end result will probably be more the sum of the parts. I trust Kunos on making it happen.
Meanwhile I have AC and we all have our favorite SIM to consume our simulation driving needs, I am in no rush.
2 weeks ago we did not even know anything different was coming and at the end of the day all it is going to be is just another driving video game.

Same for me. I think and hope that ACC will be quality over quantity. Indeed a complete Blancpain experience before, during and after the race. Much more details* added with the already very good car physics/handling and we have a winner. And if the new simracer is well adopted by us simracers they will add other series overtime. Although I think the longer term roadmap is already clear for Kunos and they have some surprises for us to come. Is this realistic or are my hopes too high? Again time will tell :) And yes meanwhile AC and Pcars2 for me

*a complete storyline around singleplayer career mode?

Last week, Kunos Simulazioni and 505 Games unveiled Assetto Corsa Competizione to the world, our Official upcoming Blancpain GT Series game. The response has been overwhelming for the team and we’d like to first take this opportunity to say a HUGE thank you to everyone that sent us a positive message or expressed their excitement in one way or another – It means a lot to us!

Coming to Steam in the summer of 2018, Assetto Corsa Competizione will allow our community to experience the GT3 Series, where players will be able to compete against official drivers, teams and cars on circuits developed to the highest level of accuracy.

Since our announcement, you guys have absolutely flooded our community channels with questions. Instead of answering you all one by one, we opted to take the blog approach.

Let’s get started, shall we?

Community FAQ’s

What is Assetto Corsa Competizione?
Assetto Corsa Competizione is our all-new racing simulation that reproduces the Blancpain GT Series Championship managed by SRO and based on the GT3 homologation. ACC is not an additional module or an extension of Assetto Corsa but a different, new and separate product altogether!

Is AC Competizione a spin-off of Assetto Corsa?
Absolutely not! We are developing AC Competizione from scratch. It takes advantage of the Blancpain GT experience, know-how and data collection acquired while working on AC. However, AC Competizione is not AC featuring the Blancpain GT Series. It is a completely new game that will offer realistic car handling as well as new features and gameplay not seen before in our products.

Will AC Competizione be available on PC Steam only, or on console too?
Right now, all our efforts are going into developing Assetto Corsa Competizione on Steam, during Early Access.

Does AC Competizione use the UE4 Engine’s physics?
AC Competizione will feature an evolution of the physics engine already used in Assetto Corsa, completely independent from UE4’s built in physics.

What is going to happen to Assetto Corsa now you’re working on Competizione?
The game will continue to be available for purchase, servers for multiplayer and lobbies will be kept open and active for as long as people continue to play it. The game will not receive further updates now (It has now been 7 years since AC development started and 4 years from its 1.0 release) Our entire team is now focused on AC Competizione.

Why the Blancpain GT Series? What does make it so special?
When we started to figure out what the new AC would have to be, we saw that -including AC- the current generation of racing games offers a huge variety of “generic” titles performing multiple race modes with any kind of cars. This usually results in finding a compromise in terms of score, racing rules, gameplay modes etc.

On the other side, very few games are dedicated to a specific race series that can be completely simulated in all its detail and, more importantly, can keep gamers focused.

Whenever we’ve asked the community for their opinion, GT racing was always on the top of their wish list, and we found that the Blancpain GT Series fits the bill! Featuring Sprint races, endurance, night racing, driver swaps, official teams and drivers, these are exactly the things our fans asked for! Not to mention the best GT cars available, in their racing outfit, that results in lightness, handling, grip and brake power. Add to this formula the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, and you get the best thrilling GT racing series ever.

Will we see a day / night cycle in Assetto Corsa Competizione?
Yes – Players will be able to race at any time of the day, thanks to a realtime, full day / night cycle.

What are the recommended system requirements for Assetto Corsa Competizione?
Our minimum target specification is currently an i5-2500/AMD FX-8100 or equivalent, 4 GB RAM and NVIDIA Geforce GTX 760. However, right now, it’s way too early to be more precise. Over time, we’ll be able to be more specific later as we continue to develop ACC. Therefore, if you are considering upgrading your hardware configuration, we strongly suggest you wait for our Early Access before upgrading.

Will Assetto Corsa Competizione be moddable? And will modders be able to port their work onto AC Competizione?
Assetto Corsa’s structure was designed from the beginning to be moddable. Being developed with UE4, AC Competizione processes data and assets through a completely different structure and file format. Therefore, the game will not be compatible with mod contents created for Assetto Corsa. Also, our team does not have enough experience with UE4 to tackle both the development a brand-new game and the challenges of supporting an open platform in the time frame available for this project.

We are fully aware of the importance of modding and its contribution to the success of Assetto Corsa. We know this might not cover everything, but over time we will continue to answer your most frequently asked questions! Once again, we want to thank our community for the outpour of support you’ve shown us since our announcement last week. We absolutely cannot wait to tell you more about Assetto Corsa Competizione in the near future!

There should be no more doubts about the car list now

Although I don't care a whole lot about the GT3 class, I might get an aneurysm if Kunos has secured exclusive rights to GT3 models featured in the Blancpain GT Series. That would suck for other developers going forward.

It would be cool to see the support series that race at the same weekend as Blancpain. Idk if it's possible to have that as part of the official Blancpain license

I think they might have the exclusive right to use official liveries and the series logos.

Possibly, but apparently no other developer than Codemasters can release a game with a full lineup of current day F1 cars. With ACC being an official racing series title, Kunos and the SRO could have pulled a similar trick. Let's hope not.

Let's not forget though that those are yearly titles. I'm positive Kunos took this series because they were not obliged to do yearly releases.
