When do you want the other shoe to drop? As competitive as we are and as much as we race we could have this sown up by tonight, then what do we do the rest of the week? I'm thinking at least till tommorrow or I could tease you with one more tonight.

Yeah, we could hope for someone else to participate. Although there is still turns 2,6, & 10 that I can improve greatly on. I keep trying to drive this like a 4WD, not a FR, must be the Audi name.

I don't know if you noticed but I threw the other shoe. I made an incremental adjustment that really paid off, problem is I have to be warmed up to get the most from it. The really scary thing is there is room for improvement in track technique, but that isn't suprising with such a long track with that many corners.

1'38's, damn I haven't even ran in GT4 yet today, as the bar rises.

Do you think it would be worth it to open a tunners garage for this thread or just keep it to a few comments at the end of the round on what the key tunning elements were?

Points For:
1) Show that we are indeed mortal.
2) Show different tunning styles cause I know you and I are as different as night and day.
3) Attract new drivers maybe.
4) Show case our cars if thats of interest.

Points Against:
1) No one likes an egotist.
2) We spent some time setting up these cars do we really want to give them away.
3) Giving away setups really doesn't teach others how and why to tune a car a certain way for a certain track to compete.
4) It will take up more time, but not so much so once the general layout is done. Most cars in this challenge have similar parts used.

I think this thread is more directly about times, although you and I have many small comments about setup. The competition aspect is a fun extra, as we are benchmarking driver's as well as the cars. As far as a Tuning garage, that may be too much, specially considering we only get you and I consistently entering times.

As far as giving away setups, that is not much of an issue, since everyone drives a bit different, and needs the setup to fit their abilities and style. As we have seen glaringly from the Buick Special, the fastest setup for me, others can't control well; and what is fastest for you, I can't squeeze as much out of.

Nice! Looks like I'm going to have to warm the tires up again. I see you found the key to this car. :)

Yeah, the key is under the floor-mat. I have to keep telling myself, "stop braking so hard, let the gears slow you down"

I still left probably 2 seconds out there.

Well the brakes was part of the incemental improvements I made. The key for me was back in the intial setup with the gear box. I built like five transmissions before I got the one I'm using now. Were you touching 6th gear any on the long straight stretch before this latest run? I wasn't in my first three gear setups.

Yeah, every different gear setup, I adjusted until I hit 6th at the end of the straight, and then worked my way backwards through the gears.

It took awhile to make it so I never hit 1st, and holds 2nd until the ends of turns 2, 6, 8, 10, 14 & 15.

Turns 9, 11, & 12 are taken in 3rd.

Turns 7, 13 & 16 are taken in 4th.

Turns 3, 4, 5, & 17 are all taken at the bottom of 5th gear.

Turn 1 is in 6th.

Top speed peaks at 198 MPH, right before the hard brake, followed by 2 feathered brakes entering Turn #2.

I finally went and got an oil change. It took a bit to get warmed up again.

As you can see, I have some more work to do. Nice times GrumpEone, you certainly do like this car. 👍

Do you ever use the analyzer in the game? I was trying to figure out my braking distance for a certain corner but the unit of measure for distance says ml, certainly they can't mean miles or it would of taken me 12.4 miles to slow down to make a turn.

As I figured its decimal miles but they made it more difficult by putting the decimal in the wrong place as well as a silly abbreviation. So just divide your distance by 100 then multiply by 5280 to get feet.

Thanks, I'm bummed, I should be running 1'09's by now, but I bought a brand new one, and am re-setting it up, more directly to this track. Still working out the brakes, and best final gear.

I rarely use the analyzer, only really to obtain top speeds of a run, and on rare occasions to workout the gear settings (usually I go by memory).

This is a powerful MR, at this track you only at a couple points need brakes, and that is just a touch here and there, if you're geared right, the transmission makes a smoother brake, it's not a crime to coast/'idle down' the gears to reach you desired speed, but that method does require practice and patience.

I'm still looking for the adjustments to make the driver better. The car can get bellow 1'14 but I don't know if the driver can.

Since you seem to have mastered this car, here is a question I've had for some time. Did you ever get the car body to stop oscillating when you go over 200 mph?

I've mostly B-Spec'ed this car in the past.

I've lost 2 HP permenantly on this particular car from crashes, so I'm probably going to have to replace it. Narrow tracks and high speeds are not a good recipie for me and long car life.

Yes, the way I have this car setup, there is very little wander at high speeds. Although with all the aids off, I do get a little squawking of the rear tires between 190-250 MPH. The really high powered MR cars, require really good/precise throttle control when changing direction, only full throttle when the car has no steering input, or it will wander and oscillate.

We setup cars completely different, but mine is setup again with a loose suspension specially in the rear (spring rate 12ish & 6ish), and very little bound and rebound (front 3 & 4, rear 1 & 2). Ride height is 5-8mm higher than minimum in the front, and 20mm higher (than the front) in the rear, to push more weight up to front for steering at low speed/deceleration. As far as Camber, I reduce it the front to around 0.8-1.3, and eliminate camber completely in the rear, I also add toe in on the rear for straight-line ability only one or two inward makes a big difference. Stabilizers are almost eliminated, going 1 & 2. Gears, I setup 1st to be real wide, 2nd & 3rd are mid range, 4th, 5th, & 6th are increasingly narrower than the previous gear, and I keep tweaking by .005 until all the shift points are right where I want them. All aids are off, as they only sap power, and make the car more unpredictable, and malfunction when your line is off a bit or bump a rumble strip. Downforce I drop slightly in the front only about 2-5, and drop the rear to within 10-15 of the front. LSD is key depending on your driving style, mine is setup to limit Initial Torque at between 25-35, Acceleration is a bit higher at 40-50, and deceleration is high too between 40-50. I haven't fine tuned this enough yet to even play with ballast. Oh I almost forgot brakes, even though I rarely use them on this car, when I do they need to be extreme, my settings are quite high in the rear 18-20 (also why the LSD in decel is high), and the front is much lower at 5-10, I like the 3:1 braking ratio (rear to front), so the rear end breaks-outward improving my acceleration line.

Hopefully I have explained my setup adequately, but it is from memory as the PS2 is again packed up, as this week & weekend I'm finally moving, for sure this time as I already have keys, and am starting to move boxes once I get a few cups of coffee in me. When the move is complete and the internet is up and running at the new place, I can give you more exact numbers rather than just ranges from memory.

I do love the insanity of the car & track combination, very fast, and exacting, if you make a mistake you know it, as you either spin-out or hit a wall then spin-out. The occasional wall taps are almost unavoidable at these speeds, and with this combo I don't discount a time for a quick wall rub/tap on the rear quarter of the car, but for a hard hit against a wall I don't count the lap time. I think my 1'09.9xx was completely clean, but a two of the 1'11's had a slight bump at turn 9, which is my issue here, Turn 9 and 10 I have the tendency to come-in too fast, and kill my lap.

Good luck.

Well 600 miles later and several very nasty crashes I still haven't gotten out of the 1'14's. The car has lost five horse power and probably needed some frame straightening as well as the body being replaced a couple of times. I'm pretty sure by now that it is mostly the driver but I would suspect you have a sweet gearbox for this one. Congradulations on a good run and to Japan, oh how I know every wall on that track now.

P.S. I have gotten my car to be fairly driveable by myself though, and it easily defeats bot cars so its not all bad, maybe I will A-spec some stuff I only B-spec'ed. My LSD settings are nearly double of yours and my brake settings are one fith of yours, I hit 240 mph into the Icho Namiki turn (turn 1N). My biggest problem though was upon exiting turn 7E and entering turn 8D. Which often put me out of positon to handle the gentle S-curves of Sotobori Dori and Shuto-ko turn 9C. If I drove the first part of the track well, I didn't the second part, if I drove the second well I didn't the first, nothing really jelled.

Nice! You have to love those 360 degree spins or that slight bump at the top of the Beau Rivage hill near Massanet. You will definetly get some air up there.

Welcome aboard Car-less!

I picked the GT version because I hadn't done one before. I have done the SE and the newer version of the Lotus before but not this one.

Hello guys. I just set a laptime for this challenge.

Let me be clear of the rules? Lotus Esprit GT V8 from used car lot with every upgrade except nitrous is what I used. All driver aids off, on Super Soft tires.

Lap 1: 1'27.414
Lap 2: crash :P
Lap 3: crash X_X
Lap 4: 1'26.980

If I got the rules wrong then feel free to make fun of me!

Edit: Did another six laps, returned a 1'25.181

All of this is explained on the first page of the Lap Time Benchmark thread which is in my signature. The only other thing besides no nitrous, is no using a game shark or other device for your run. Welcome aboard! I'm assuming you put a wing on yours?

Yes, I put aero on the car and just cranked it to max. I also use a Driving Force Pro.

At first I felt like I was fighting the car's stability instead of its traction but after a while I started to really like it.

Yeah its a fun car once you get the hang of it.
