Soccer mom convention November 1st! Pyxen, Diablo, Cujo, you're invited! Wiifreak, I would invite you, but I believe the Alfa would break down on the way there. You can catch a ride with someone though.

Fun race last night. Dabney and I battled the entire race. I was fast through the turns but not fast enough to pull away. Dabney was faster on the straight until I reached redline, and then we were about equal. It came down to the last two laps. I use garris to pull away a little at the start of lap 26. I maintained the gap until the long straight. Dabney closed in and pulled ahead before turn 1, but he braked too late. It was messy, I was on his bumper for the next few turns but then he pulled away a little on the infield straight. I out braked him entering the first of the hairpins and pulled away...but I went wide exiting the 2nd hairpin and started fish tailing. That gave him the inside line for the final turn. I tried to stick the outside line but I had to lift off. My mistake almost cost me 2nd place too, as WiiFreak in his Alpha came up in my draft. I blocked once and that got me back up to speed. Boy that was close!

Anyway, it appears tire wear is not going to be a factor for comfort medium tires. Dabney may have lost a little edge, but not enough to lose the race. Things may be different at Tsukuba though, where the amount of turning will be almost double what it was last night.

I think I was down to about 80% in the front, and the rears show basically no wear. I think if I can keep those tires from going red too much I'll be ok.

Even at 80% you were doing fine. I was at about 90-95% by the end. I had to take a few turns a little slower, but it didn't affect my braking points very much at all.

Garris, do you use the bumper cam view? I heard you complaining about not knowing your braking point...and it seems you always brake very early. I've mentioned this before, but the shift indicator is the perfect brake indicator for hard braking zones like turn 1 at Indy. It will never fail you. When you see the indicator turn red, prepare to brake. When it flashes, brake hard. For comfort tires you usually have to brake immediately, but for racing tires you can sometimes wait for it to flash a few times. The key is to time your braking based on the flashing. That will show you the right spot, and from there you can start adjusting your brake point later and later depending on how much room you have left over.

I find it's best to use the distance indicators on the track too. For example, I was braking right between the 150 and 100 markers on turn 1 last night.

Garris, do you use the bumper cam view?

Yes, I do. I did make comment about a couple of things last night.

One was the braking where Cujo got into me (the second time) and did damage. That was lap three or four, I think?

Spooble and I came up on him on the front straight, and he started swerving massively from one side to the other, hitting the wall. Spooble and I both slowed to get around him safely. In fact, I passed Spooble, the only reason being because of how much he slowed.

I know I was going slower than I normally would, but I didn't take the time to work out how much slower I was going. I used the same brake point I would've used had I not slowed (which was just past the first marker, 150 meters, I think). Cujo got into me and I had to pit.

That was my comment about braking. I didn't know where I should brake because I didn't normally approach that turn at that speed. I erred on the side of caution. I'd hate to brake too late and wreck myself.

I did make a comment about the camera at one point. I forget who was beside me at one point. I saw him in my rear mirror, and then he moved up beside me as we went into a corner. At that point, I can no longer tell just where he is. I probably slow too much in cases like that, which is bad because he may just be moving back behind me and not trying to pass me in the corner.

As it turned out, though, he was trying to take the inside and he got by me cleanly. But I was going much slower than I normally would've through that corner.

On the straights, I'll tap the button to see where the person is beside me, but I don't dare do that in a corner.

Overall, I'm pleased with myself. I did have a couple offs on the last corner, trying to keep up with the cars infront of me. But I didn't have any major offs, no spins, and didn't hit anything or anyone (save a tap to Wii's door). My fastest lap time during the race, though, was the second or third slowest fastest lap time. :(

So people who didn't enter have a full extra week to pick their car?!? Hmmm, yea that seems fair. Hell they coulda just purposely missed the race to see how it went...

No matter, the GTI will still be the car to beat. The cvt is good, but BTW will need max cash in one race for huge turbo. The fr on rain will be disaster

Cujo 940
Per the main page, car selection was due by the 25th, those without cars should be dq.

Well if they can't pick one of our cars, is it a problem? Are there any other cars that would be competitive?

I would rather see a full race grid than DQ drivers for not picking a car in time. However, now that the cat is out of the bag, I think drivers who didn't submit a car should be required to pick something that was not already selected. That means no more Polo GTIs or VW Bugs.

As for cars to beat. The GTIs should have been at the front last night. They are plenty fast. It didn't surprise me that Bowtie was able to pull away from everyone after half a lap. The CVT Fit will be fast throughout the season as long as he can manage tire wear. It has the power to pass exiting any corner. When I ran it on our test nights it could win without any effort. I think the FR cars will do just fine. They don't have enough power to break loose the rear tires in the rain. I also think the FFs will be fine too...since there will be very little tire wear until later in the season.

The Polo is currently worse than the Bettle and Fit. I think the GTIs could hang with any car with draft, but as soon as its gone...we're toast...for now

Again, :mischievous:

Yes.

A few that come to mind:

Mazda Cosmo (a little tail happy but will build up nicely)
Opel/Vauxhall Tigra 1.6i (i haven't driven it, but I saw others do well during practice)
Corsa Comfort (slap a mid-rpm turbo on to start and it'll be quick)
Honda Fit (same as Jazz, but don't think it has the CVT)
Honda Accord (heavy, but quick in a straight line)
Honda Civic '79 (won't be fast the first race, but its a fun car)

People who didn't submit anything get the same treatment as people who enter the series late. They have to pick a car that no one else is using.

Since the season hasn't started, I guess I could see letting you change to something that no one else as picked (such as the Accord). But since there are two other people running the same car that you have now, I can't imagine it is really that bad a car.

i had a really difficult time maintaining my tires yesterday

i'm concerned now

i'm driving an FR, and it handles like an FR, but the tires are wearing like an FF

:(

this could be a long season

A few tips to help you...

1) Under hard braking...always keep the wheel straight. If you turn in while you are still braking hard, you will just chew up the front tires and understeer.

2) Learn to trail brake for moderate brake zones. Keeping your foot lightly on the brakes deep into a turn keeps weight forward providing more grip for the front tires and less grip for the rear tires. When done right, it will help the car rotate without over using your front tires.

Last night was a blast! I knew my Demio (and/or my driving) was relatively slow. I was close to 3 seconds back in qualifying. I was decent through the twisty sections, but just didn't have the power down the straight. I figured I could at least finish middle of the pack as long as I could hang on to the draft.

I botched it off the line, the first turn was a mess, and I ended up further back than I wanted to be. A couple laps in and I'm thinking that, with a little help, we could still catch the tail end of the middle group. Then, I'm drafting Cujo down the front straight and he goes all crazy. I thought he was lagging at first as he swerved right and hit the wall. He bounced back into the middle of the track and straightened up and I moved left to pass on the outside. About that time he swerved and hit the left wall in front of me and I had to brake hard to keep from hitting him. I knew there was no catching up after that, so I just kept running my laps.

I don't know how leadbedr ended up behind me, but he did. I was doing my best to stay far enough ahead of him to keep him out of my draft when my dog starts whining like she needs to go out. Everyone else is in bed and I'm thinking "No way! Not now!". She's old so sometimes when the mood hits, she'll just pee in the floor. So I'm trying to get her to just lay down, but she's whining... pacing around... goes into the kitchen... goes in the back hall. I'm about at the point of parking in the grass and letting her out when she goes and lays back down on her bed. Crisis averted. But in the meantime I've lost 8 or 10 seconds and leadbedr is drafting me for all he's worth!

We had a great battle for many laps, changing positions a couple times. On the last turn of the last lap, leadbedr was ahead but went just a touch wide and I got a good run. I drafted him and then swung low coming onto the front straight. My momentum carried me forward so that his nose was about even with my rear wheel, but out of the draft, my poor Demio just didn't have anything for the Polo GTI. We're dragging for the finish and he's steadily creeping back up my left side. The finish line just can't come fast enough. He's pulled even with me and shows no signs of stopping when, out of nowhere, Diabolic drives his car up from the pit wall, across the track in front of me, directly in front of leadbedr. I'm sure someone died from the impact, but I was grinning from ear to ear as I crossed the finish line... going from 7th to 5th in the last 10 meters. :)

I lost the mid pack draft. I could run the lap times, even make up time, bit was losing 3-4 seconds on the straight. So I stopped and waited for Spooble and galikzoid so I could race someone.
I think the polo should be pretty good if I can keep the tires in check.

Just as I was about to finish I thought...wheres my wallet. I remembered having it at the start so i parked my car very neatly on the line and my driver went for a look. Turns out it wasnt my wallet, but rather my uncle Harold who'd been missing. Come to find out he'd been in the back seat eating a sandwich the entire race and had merely slouched down to nab a quarter from under the seat. Well you can imagine how embarrassed I was so I ran back to the car, started her up...made it 10 feet and out of nowhere I was snashed by a pink GTI. Sadly...uncle Harold didnt make it.

NOOOO!!! That was my favorite uncle of yours! He was such a good man.

As for the race, I was able too pull 2.5 seconds before half track, and I felt bad so I figured it wouldn't hurt to let Diabolic catch the draft again, make things interesting.

Sounds like it should be a good season :) I'm looking forward to wreaking havoc on the field in my SR-XX of Doom!

MOVE out of the way, biatches...Diahatsu ahoy!

Would be nice if there was a real livery editor. For some reason, I want to paint my Beetle like a Journey scarab.

Had some fun at Spa this evening....I definitely vote some Lemons action there sometime. Maybe a Holiday sesh or something...

I would've been willing to include it this season.

Just as well, though, I'm still sorting out the problems with Sony, so I don't have the course installed, yet.

I need a stock Mazda Demio '99 if anyone sees one. I didn't know that I couldn't install parts on it, yet. Thanks.

Okay, not sent.

I made the mistake of sending you your Beetle back, and there is that silly one car limit. I can send you a Demio tomorrow, though.
