Now that I think about it, Wednesday would be better for me(just joined a Tues night vball group). Count me officially in(If its Wednesday, great, if not, I will come when I can). Can't tell you yet which car and color choices though. I haven't picked those out yet.

Just to make sure I understand before I go through my car options.. It can be from the UCD, OCD, or regular dealership. I just need to keep the purchase price under $30k. Whatever is left of the $30k, I can put into the "bank" for the season, or start upgrading immediately. Is this all correct?
Yes this is all correct. If the price of the car is off from the value listed at mygranturismo.net, please take a photo of it and email to Chris(at)huyler.net

my chosen car is... RX-7 Type RS (FD) '00 (28,766) Cr Copied from mygranturismo.net as i forget how much it was as i bought it months ago
Great!

I played around this morning in an online lounge on Deep Forest with a couple Lancers, Imprezas, the DC5 Integra and the S15 Silvia. They were as I purchased them, with whatever tires they had. I was dramatically faster with the Lancers and Imprezas, so I'm going that direction. I just need to find the right one (preferable two, one for the series and one as a test bed that I can put parts on and test before I commit to purchasing them on the series car).

What I am looking for in the UCD is an older GT-R for under 30K. If anyone sees one, you mind snagging it and sending it my way? I don't mind hitting you back (or spending a day running your B-spec drivers to earn you some cash).

Also, just out of curiosity, anyone mind sharing lap times (just want to get a feel for how far off I am)? I think the best I did so far at Deep Forest was a 1:34.5 on one of the Imprezas. It needs an oil change, but it was running sports hard tires.

Tonight I'll start practicing on Autumn Ring.

Good idea about purchasing two. I was thinking of doing the same. I hate that you cannot remove weight reduction or engine tuning once installed.

I think a cool idea, maybe not for this series, would be to pick one of the premium cars and do a one-make series from stock->RM. And you could just repeat it with another car when the series is over. I'm interested in this, i just hope the money distribution system works well

I'll hop in for the preseason.
I don't know if I'll be able to do the entire race, but well see.
Do you want to know what car I'll be using?

Well if you purchase it, then test on the track. Make sure your turn off your ps3 before backing out of the track menu and it won't save. Then you can test without it and see what you like better.

I'm running a 350z '03 with a sport ECU, a semi-racing flywheel and a racing air filter. Anywhere between 45.5xx and 46.7xx on Autumn Ring Mini on Comfort Softs. What times are everyone else getting?

If I buy something from the UCD...how do I confirm with you the amount I spend.

Chuyler mentioned posting a picture. I wasn't going to bother, until I found a rather quick litter car for 6K Cr less than it is listed in mGT.net. Mind you, I also found two cars that cost more than their price in mGT.net.

I just found two of those in my UCD. I was thinking of possibly using this as well. Would it be ok if 2 of us ran the same type of car. Different cars, mileage, color etc.. but pretty much the same. One was $26K and the other was 27K.

It would be great if I could, because I feel like I have run a lot of miles with a very similar car on comfort softs.

Edit: Just ran some laps at Autumn Mini. What a freaking blast. Haven't added any mods yet, as I am not sure that any more power would really help the Z here. Weight reduction would be the best, but would put me over the 30K. I guess I could get the window reduction, but that just seems kind of silly.

So if me running a similar car to Tesla is ok, please put me down for the 03Z. I think it will be fun during the season to have someone running a similar car. It will be interesting to see how we choose our mods.

Chuyler, I took a picture of the car in the UCD with my cell phone. As soon as I figure out my mods, I will send you a picture and modification list. Thanks man,

Rees

I found a '96 GT-R, but I feel guilty for using it. Even though it lists in myGranTurismo.net for under 30K, it was 32K in my UCD. It is moot, though. It weighs so much that it was running slower than the Lancers and Imprezas I've been testing.

Autumn Ring Mini is a beast. It is much harder than a larger and faster course. I rarely get above third, and since each turn is right on top of the previous one, if you miss a line in one curve, you'll be out of place for the line in the next curve.

My best time was 46.2 in an Impreza. That is not consistent though. Reliably, I can do 48s.

It is the car that I'm favoring at the moment, but I do want to test a bit more with a Lancer. I'm liking this Impreza because it is a two-door and weighs much less than the regular four-door Imprezas and Lancers. Also, it was less than 21,000 Cr, so I have some more money to play around with.

Mind you, I don't know what would improve lap times at Autumn Ring for less than 10K. More horsepower isn't going to help me, we have tire restrictions, and none of the cars I'm looking at have the option for a front aero kit to help combat the understeer.

^ weight reduction then ballast at the rear? The 350z is a little understeery on entry, and power oversteery on exit. Still trying to keep the tail in line on the last half of the track.

Alright, I think I'm going to keep Wednesday as the day. I'm sorry if that excludes people that were looking to do it on Tuesday. When this season finishes, I will change the day as a compromise.

Sounds like people are really getting into the car selection...remember though, the first race is just the beginning. It's ok to grab a car from the new dealer if you think it will work out better later in the season. Pick something you'll enjoy driving and modding.

I personally haven't even driven anything yet. I have a few ideas based on mygranturismo.net but considering the prices vary. I think i'll have to spend some time shopping for just the right car.

Like I said, this thing is a blast to drive. Always have your hands full with this one. I would be happy if the whole season was on comfort softs.

Tesla, we will have to get into a practice room together at some point. I am able to run some decent times on edge.. but in race I will have to calm it down a bit, or end up sideways.:sly:

It would be interesting to talk about our strategies with this car for the series. That is if you want to share. I am usually an open book when it comes to talking about setups and the such. We can talk about this more later if you would like.

Well, I'm stoked about this. I just became completely committed to Tuesday night vball, and would not have been able to participate in this series. Now that this series runs Wednesdays, I should be able to make most, if not all the races.

Chuyler,

I just noticed there is nothing stated about qualifying. How are we going to work this during the season? Qualifying sessions before the first race with grid based off previous race? Qualifying sessions for each race? I have some ideas for this that have worked in a couple of the other series I have been in.

I guess I will go ahead and mention how I have seen it done. For a series that runs on Saturday at 6pm, we run a qualifying session on Friday night, and another on Saturday at 4:30pm. 1 person enters the track, the host starts a 4 lap race. The best lap of laps 2 and 3 count as the qualifying time. Only one attempt is allowed. The host can then save the race in case there are any questions about going off track. A penalty of 5 seconds is applied(per occurence) to any "illegal" lap.(ie less than 2 tires on track surface).

On a track like La Sarthe, you could have more than 1 qualifier on the track at a time, just tell them to give the person in front a one minute head start. Or whatever time seems appropriate to the track. You just have to make sure there are enough "eyes"(people in the room to watch each qualifier), so that the laps can be deemed valid.

Since it is a one shot deal, it is a bit of an adrenaline rush. Fun stuff.

Whatever you decide though, I am along for the ride and just shooting out suggestions.

What about an actual qualifying session? i do a supergt series and all cars are made to leave track.. rejoin and wait in pits until all cars have entered then for 15 minutes qualify. no cars are allowed to leave track :)

The only problem with this setup, is if someone takes a "shortcut." Also, you are down to luck of the traffic. There is also a fun thrill to the way I mentioned above. I think it also helps the slower people improve their lines as they get to watch the faster people qualify.

But, your everyone at once style is definitely easier for the Series host. It takes a bit of time to run the separate qualifying runs.

Considering the race time will be about 1 hr, I'm not sure we have to go to great lengths with qualifying. In real life, Grand Am cars qualify on the track at the same time during a 15-30 minute session. That is enough time to run a few laps, make some last minute changes, then run a few more laps. Obviously there won't be too many last minute changes during the first few events since I suspect most drivers will have bone stock cars. During the qualifying session, do your best to stay clear of other cars on the track. Do not attempt to pass unless it is on a straight or the other driver runs really wide. If you are obstructed by a driver in front of you, slow down so you can have an empty track in front of you. Half-way through the qualifying session if you want to shadow cars to see how you will match up that is fine...as long as the other driver knows you are doing that.

So here is what the next few days will look like...

Please email your car selection to chris(at)huyler.net by 12:00PM EDT on Wednesday using the following format:

To: chris(at)huyler.net
Subject: LEMONS to LEMANS

Car Make/Model: MyMake MyModel MyTrim MyYear
Purchase Price: 28,000cr ***
Sport Air filter: 450cr
ECU: 1000cr
OtherMod: XXXXcr
TOTAL: 29450cr
*** Attach photo of car in UCD if purchase price is below mygranturismo.net listed price.

Room will be open between 9:30-9:40 on Wednesday. Qualifying at Autumn Ring Mini and discussion will occur between 9:30-10:00. If you are done qualifying, park your car in the sand trap on turn 1 to watch the other drivers. If you exit the track your qualifying time may be reset (I haven't quite figured out when/why this happens). BTW, you can press and hold the ebrake button to keep your car from moving.

Race will start at 10:00 and based on typical lap times should run about 1 hour. I was first thinking the pre-season kick-off should be a shorter race, but I think running the full hour will give you an idea of how tires are going to last and what kind of pit strategy you may want to use the next week.

For fairness, the car you chose for the pre-season kick-off is the car you will use for the entire season unless you petition the entire group to allow you to change your car.

Oh, BTW, if you haven't already figured this out, online grip is very different from practice mode grip. When tuning your cars, you'll want to run laps in your private lobby under your own community page. If you tune in practice mode, your car will end up being very loose in online mode.

It all sounds good Chuyler. I look forward to our pre-season race.

If I get a chance to run another practice session before Wednesday, I will post the room number here. Sometimes its nice to see how other people run the course.:)

Just to confirm: We only need to send a pic if the price was less than mygranturismo.net and we are allowed to do the oil change/chassis refresh/engine maintence outside the 30K budget.

Correct.. although my problem is i bought another RX7 in the UCD for 2k less than the 1 i previously bought and i have been auto grinding a spec all night therefor i cant atually get the list price up for the car i bought...

Correct. I only need proof of the price if it is less than mygranturismo. I suspect people used that site to get an idea of what to look for so if people find a nicer car for less money than expected, I'd just like some proof of it. Otherwise we'd have people claiming their rally car was listed at 30k.

Sweet, really looking forward to this. I'm bringing an '02 WRX STi, should be a blast, although I think my rear end is going to be pretty messed up at the end as i have to start braking pretty early for turn 1 with this car on comfort softs... :)

At first, I wasn't expecting a lot of the same car. I'm not sure why, though. It does make sense.

I may go with a '99 coupé, but I've been testing the '02 sedan.
