Lincoln Continental: 2016 Revival

This newer Continental is a good bit Audi-ish, but I dig it. It doesn't look boring in any real respect. But then too, it isn't as lovely as another past Lincoln- the Lincoln LS. So put me on the "yay" side of the fence in judging this car.

Oh, what could have been...
Yeah, too bad they missed their "Mark". :sly:

I love the 02 concept because it was so faithful to the original, literally a modern interpretation, angular bulk and all plus a beautiful interior and suicide doors.

The 2002 concept and this monstrosity have nothing in common.

This car is too roundy to be a Conti. It's hideous. Looks like a cheap affordable Bentley.

They have rounded it off too much and the grille doesn't scream the brand to me but the sides and rear are ok IMO.

Reminds me of this in the rear:

Cool story. Full-width tail lights have been a design feature of Lincolns for decades.

If anybody has copied full-width tails, the European brands copied it from American companies.

Let's get some things straight here. Lincoln and Cadillac are names known for luxury innovation. The best designs, pioneering technology, etc. Unfortunately, their parents companies managed these brands poorly and didn't keep them up with competition, all of whom have now taken the crown away. But let's go back in history for a second to see who was making what and when.

In 1964, Bentley was selling this rickety old thing:

It's got the design qualities of 1940s Lincolns and Cadillacs.

1946 Lincoln:

1945 Cadillac:

In 1964, Lincoln and Cadillac were making these stunning works of art. In fact, 1960s Lincolns and Cadillacs are so cherished that the brands still draw inspiration from them and Americans still identify with them. The new Continental concept draws heavily from 1960s Continentals:

I would easily put the Lincoln and Cadillac brands in the upper echelon of luxury automakers. I'd argue that they're even more limousine-like than Bentley or Mercedes and more like Rolls Royce in that they weren't designed to race, they were design to waft their owners along in the fanciest way possible. You lot do realize that BMW and Audi's reputation for luxury is actually quite recent.

Unfortunately for Lincoln and Cadillac, their parents companies have thoroughly neglected them for decades while FoMoCo and GM tried to make a quick buck by selling cheap crap to the masses. Obviously that strategy failed miserably and these companies have mostly changed their ways but Lincoln and Cadillac - especially Lincoln - still have a lot further to go to get to where they historically should be which is parked right between Bentley and Rolls Royce.

Lincoln is so far removed from the "upper echelon of luxury" that they wouldn't know it if it slapped them in the face, peccary gloves and all.

Funny how it took me a while to see that, I've seen a Flying spur in person before. You would think that would mean I would be able to recognize the shape. Oh well, aside from the Flying Spur; the Lincoln also kinda gives me a Jaguar vibe.

I was talking about the shape and positioning of everything in the rear, not just the full-width lights.

It's the same damn car.

Even the chinese knockoffs try harder to make their cars look different.
I see my post has fallen on deaf ears.

They look highly similar. Interestingly, the Lincoln is less ugly. I'd say the Lincoln's rear in particular is far more elegant.

Well, there are only so many places to put a rear window, license plate and exhaust outlets. Regardless, both the Lincoln and Audi have excellent rear ends, far better than the Bentley that everyone is suddenly huge fan of.

Indeed, @Keef, out of the 3 xeroxed machines the Lincoln stands on top, especially from the rear.

Damn fine machine.

No way they will make that, that looks to be too expensive to make it anywhere near Lincolns brand prestige.

Unless all the materials used are made to look expensive but really cheap as hell.

I really like how the exterior of the car looks, but why does the lower half of the back of the front passenger seat look like it came straight out of the seat back of a Ryanair plane?

The whole interior looks like a tart's boudoir, the exterior is very nice (veeeery Audi-esque) but the interior... bleugh.
