I am too good to need a rewind function. I never mess up, or ever have to go back even 1/2 turn. Ask the guy in my quote

I was once one of the proud, the fierce, the righteous. I railed against rewind in Forza. I hated it, the entire idea, it ruined the entire essence of sim racing. It offended me, and mocked me with its very existence.

Then I played it. And I loved it. I used it to perfect corners. I used it to create awesome overtakes in replays. I used it for all sorts of things. My wife played the game and she learnt to drive the demo track so fast because she could instantly correct her mistakes while they were fresh in her mind. Enjoying the game with her is a great feeling.

A mate of mine came around to play and the same thing happened, he just had fun learning the track without being frustrated, and then spent an hour creating a replay of a Jason Plato style drive, complete with drifting overtakes and all sorts of silliness. Enjoying the game with him was a great feeling too.

With full damage modelling, a single mistake can cost you an hour long race. You don't bounce off the wall with a 3 second penalty, you just lose. Is this realistic? Yes. Is this fun when you only have an hour or so to yourself to play before bed for work the next day? Not for me. If your gaming is about enjoyment for your and your friends, you might actually like it! If you get your thrills by pretending you're a deadly serious real life racer in front of your tv, it might not be a big drawcard for you. But offering more choice to users is never a bad thing.

In summary:
Can rewind make the game more enjoyable? Yes. I've given 3 examples.
Does my decision to use it in single player affect you in any way at all? No.
Does the game force you to use the rewind feature? No.

So why the hate?
Aspect, if Turn10 ever reads your post, they will know that they have achieved what they wanted to with that feature.

Trust me, I am like you. You can browse the Forzacentral forums, I used to be against such a silly idea at first. There's probably been a time or two, when I've complained about in the Forza 3 thread, here. But, it really isn't all that bad once you understand it's true purpose in the game, much like the Auto-Braking.

Props to you, sir. 👍👍

I don't care if it's in. If it is, great. People who are just learning the game would have an easier time. If it isn't, who cares?

Good point but if your in a championship or endurance race there is no way to keep you from using it to correct a fault thats your own. A better solution is to improve AI which I am hopeful they have done in GT5.
Sure there is. It's called self-control.

The more i go into it the more i can see that it cant affect my ability to improve myself if i hav this feature. And if people find it useful then im all for it. But i think it shouldnt be a forced feature.. people should be allowed to decide whether they want to practice the oldschool way (i.e. without either function), or to use one or the other, or both at the same time.

I don't see how it could be a forced feature... I mean I suppose every time you touched something the game could force a rewind on your or something but that's the only way...

As is, rewind is not a forced feature, you choose if you want to use it just like you said.

The only real issue is that people/turn10 can accuse PD of copy-cat-ing.. which could be bad'ish for PD. But it can definitely hurt PD.. they do NOT want reviews/comments spelling out to ppl that theyre copycaters (i.e. copied teh driveline, copied the rewind, copied the livery). It's soemthing to consider.

Now we are getting somewhere... pride perhaps rearing it's ugly head?

Sure there is. It's called self-control.

And besides, there is a "real" one: Assign the rewind button to some function other than rewind. No button mapped to rewind, no rewinding until you can re-map it, thus useless! :D

You mean the same self control people use to keep themselves from punting other people and using them as barriers online?:dopey:

The difference is that you can crash into someone else and ruin their game, the only one you can effect with rewind is your own game...

Dev Now we are getting somewhere... pride perhaps rearing it's ugly head?

I can see that it is a possibility which could translate into bad publicity for PD.. but it's unlikely to have a lasting effect unless reviewers, fanantics and/or turn10 go out of their way to make a big drama out of it.. And given T10's aggressive approach promotion, it's a possibility that PD would need to consider carefully. In business, peoples perceptions are everything.

Rewind wont be in online races. Who races offline? Isnt the best part of todays racing game racing real, live people from around the world?

I get the pro's of this feature, but realistically I wont use just because Ill be online as soon as the licenses are done.

Another problem solved, Ismoke will not play single player so ditch the whole career mode! :sly:

Thanks McLaren. And what you say about it and auto-braking are dead right. These features are not there for the more serious racers among us. They're here to bring in new players, so that one day they can become serious racers. Who wouldn't want more players, a bigger community, and more sales as incentive for the developers to keep making better games?

If you're implying you lack the self control to keep from ramming, I may have to avoid you come March.

The moment PD refuses to add something because it's in another game is the moment they become followers.

Ismoke, first of all it's bad form to cut up and rearrange a quote. You kept most of the original meaning of what I said, but it's still not a quote if you've changed it.

Second, that attitude smacks of snobbery. You refuse to believe that someone who gets drawn into a game because of accessibility features can ever grow in skill to your level?

Edit: Spelling.

The difference is that you can crash into someone else and ruin their game, the only one you can effect with rewind is your own game...

Are you suggesting people will rewind while everybody else buzzes by?

This is more interesting than I thought...:sly:

Me? lol.....c'mon, you can do better than that. Remember...I'm not the one asking for a bailout feature ;)

I think he is just talking to talk now... serious doensn't mean good is just pretty much empty words. I mean no it doesn't, but there is no garauntee of making a good driver, and serious is about as much as you can ask for.

Are you suggesting that rewind would actually be included in multiplayer races?

Someone hasn't done their homework... have you really ever actually played a game that has rewind? I am starting to think one of the most vocal opponents of rewind is talking out his a**

I mean what game designer would legitimately allow your game to be suddenly interupted and rewound just because someone else pushed a button... can you imagine 8-16 people on course each with a rewind button?

Exorcet The moment PD refuses to add something because it's in another game is the moment they become followers.

I'm not sayign that PD shouldnt add it, what i saying is that they should be careful how they go about doing it if they decide to implement a rewind function. For instance, one thing they can do is make sure there are certain unique but practical features incorporated into their rewind function (e.g. time display, rewind speed, jump/skip function, the ability to record your times etc), this will give them some "space" from T10's version and mitigate any potential negative reactions from people who might otherwise perceive it as copycat-ing.

Gees, I agreed with you. And I put "will" in italics, I forgot the whole quote is already italicised. A parapharse or indirect quote is still a quote, and you got your name in the corner, so it was correct form.

But to answer your question, anyone that cant hit braking points will never be good. It will draw people in and they wont improve. When they take off the brake assist it will be like the playing for the first time.

I fixed the quote. Now it is proper.

How in gods name is rewind cheating?

I think the better question is how is it not cheating?

Titles that feature a "rewind" button:

GRiD
DIRT 2
Forza 3

Wow, Forza is in great company. Maybe GT5 should join them. Not.

I used it to create awesome overtakes in replays.

Thanks for bringing up another way rewind will ruin Gran Turismo

When racing in Gran Turismo there is always that rare awesome pass that I will never forget. Like when I split two Ferrari F40s or dive bombing and passing two Dodge Vipers going into Turn 1 at Fuji.

These moments are so great because they were not staged WWE style and were pulled off perfectly

Imagine all the youtube videos put up that will always be questioned. Was the video staged or was it for real? Suddenly that video of you passing 2 cars 3 wide through the middle is meaningless as you can stage it with rewind.

I know the rewindists will dust off my concerns as undue fear. I'll get the same old "dont use it" routine. I said it before, it's not that simple. They can fiddle while Rome burns but I'd rather do something about it.

Niether am I, in fact no one is.

You were never a bad driver?

I know I was a crap driver a long time ago... I think I am pretty good now.

I don't think that people who are once not good can never get good is at all sound logic.
