The last time the Astros and White Sox met, they split a four-game series in Houston. Let's see how things go this time when the Houston Astros at (currently) 19-18 head to the Southside of Chicago to meet the currently 13-16 Chicago White Sox...

* HOU Astros at CHW White Sox - 3 games

[GAME 1] This game was delayed by about two hours due to rain. The White Sox struck first on a solo homer to left. White Sox went up 1-0 in the Bottom of the 2nd. Houston would tie it up at 1-0 on a sacrifice fly by Jeremy Peña in the Top of the 4th. The Astros would go ahead in the Top of the 5th on an RBI. Two deep RBIs were landed by Houston in the Top of the 6th to go up 4-1. As if the Astros didn't need to prove anything further in this game, Yordan Alvarez bombs one to deep right that probably ended up in Lake Michigan to go up 5-1. FIVE unanswerered runs by the Astros. In a game that went just after Midnight this one ended 5-1 in favor of the Houston Astros.

[GAME 2] FOX had this game on in Prime Time on Saturday night. Luis Roberts Jr. put it on the board with a solo jack to left in the Bottom of the 4th. The Astros would tie things up at 1 in the Top of the . However, the White Sox took down the Astros 3-1. Rubber Game to come Sunday afternoon.

[GAME 3] When I first saw Game 3, the Houston Astros led 4-1 on around the Bottom of the 6th. A two-run bomb by the White Sox brought the Astros' lead to 4-3. However, that was all the offense the White Sox could muster as the Astros took the Rubber Game and the series by the score of 4-3.

GM2: (3-1; Chicago White Sox)
GM3: (4-3; Houston)

UP NEXT: vs. CHC Cubs - 3 games, starting MON

The 2023 Houston Astros are now 21-19 on the 2023 season, currently 2nd in the AL West now behind the Texas Rangers. The Cleveland Guardians did the Astros a favor by taking down the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim earlier on Sunday. Well, we face one of our old NL Central foes in our next series. We're done with the Chicago White Sox this season. Now... we face the other Chicago team- the Chicago Cubs. This time, here in Houston. Three games against the Cubbies coming up starting on Monday.

Congratulations to all series winners and all recent game winners! Hopefully your beloved team(s) won.

The Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs used to be division rivals in the NL Central. When the Astros joined the American League in 2013, those NL Central memories went away. It's time we re-kindle those Astros/Cubs matches. We're done with one Chicago team; now, we deal with the other Chicago team. So let's get it!

* CHC Cubs at HOU Astros - 3 games

[GAME 1] When I first followed the game, it was tied at 4-4, but not sure what inning it was at that time. The Houston Astros ended up winning 6-4. Alex Bregman did the go-ahead two-run damage with his homer in the Bottom of the 7th.

[GAME 2] On a wild pitch from CHC's Justin Steele (8 starts; 6-0, 1.82 ERA), Mauricio Dubon stole home in the Bottom of the 1st to put the Astros up 1-0 early. The Chicago Cubs responded in the Top of the 2nd with a solo jack to very deep right, just on the left side of the right foul pole. So we're tied at 1-1 now. After Alex Bregman gets hit by a pitch, Yordan Alvarez hits an almost home-run that brought A-Breg on an RBI in the Bottom of the 4th. That was the go-ahead score for the Astros to make it 2-1. That RBI double was part of four straight RBI doubles. So make that a 5-1 Astros lead after four innings. Fast-forward in the game, and the Astrow now led the Cubbies 7-1 in the Bottom of the 8th. Cubs finally scored again with a two-run bomb by Seiya Suzuki to left. Astros lead cut from 7-1 to 7-3 now. That would be the final score- Astros win 7-3.

[GAME 3] The Cubs were dealing with an erratic J.P. France on the mound and had no problem jumping out on top early. A leaoff walk and two RBIs followed by a solo homer from Seiya Suzuki put the Cubbies up 3-0 in the Top of the 1st. Alex Bregman hit a solo jack to left to respond to the Cubs' early 3-0 lead. That "Breggy Bomb" cut the Cubbies' lead to 3-1. Fast-forward to the Bottom of the 7th, and it's now 6-1, Cubs. So the Cubs avert an Astros sweep and leave H-Town with a blowout victory. Most of this was J.P. France's fault. Houston managed to cut the Cubs' lead to 6-3 after eight innings. The Cubs' lineup has ex-Astro Trey Mancini. Jake Meyers took it from 6-3 Cubs to 6-5 thanks to a two-run bomb to left in the Bottom of the 9th. The Astros' rally to win worked as they won 7-6... or is it just a tie? The Cubs challenged the final play after a bases loaded hit brought home two Astros. And after further review the play... STANDS! Astros sweep the Cubs in dramatic fashion! WOW!

UP NEXT: vs. OAK Athletics - 3 games, starting FRI

The 2023 Houston Astros are now 24-19 on the 2023 season, still behind the Texas Rangers for 2nd in the AL West. Speaking of the AL West, we welcome the Oakland Athletics for a three-game set to conclude this home stand. The Astros can only control what they can control as far as the AL West is concerned right now. The only team to sweep the Astros last season was the A's. So the A's probably think they can take down the Astros in a sweep again if they have their way.

Congratulations to all series winners and all recent game winners! What has your team(s) done lately?

After having a day off from their wild comeback victory to sweep the Chicago Cubs, the Houston Astros returned to divisional play action by hosting the Oakland Athletics. You have to feel for the A'S in going from Oakland to Las Vegas starting around 2027. Yet still, the Astros have business to take care of in riding their four-game winning streak. Let's see how Astros-Athletics go this time around in Houston...

* OAK Athletics at HOU Astros - 3 games

[GAME 1] Best news for the Houston Astros was José Altuve being activated to compete. So he made his season debut tonight after a few rehab starts at the Corpus Christi Hooks (Astros' AA affiliate). When I saw the score for the first time, it was 4-1, Astros in the Middle of the 6th. Kyle Tucker hit a two-run bomb during this time as part of those four runs. The Astros scored again in the Bottom of the 8th with an RBI single. Astros now lead 5-1. That was the final score on Friday night- 5-1, Astros.

[GAME 2] The Houston Astros' offense was cooking with a couple of RBIs in the Bottom of the 1st to go up 2-0. The Oakland Athletics picked up a run in the Top of the 4th to cut the Astros lead to 2-1. The A's would tie things up at 2-2 in the Top of the 6th with a sacrifice fly. In the Bottom of the 8th, Yordan Alvarez would smash a homer to right to put the Astros up 3-2. Houston wins this one by that same score: 3-2.

[GAME 3] Happy birthday, Orbit (Houston Astros' mascot)! Houston led 1-0 in the Bottom of the 6th when I first tuned into this game. I heard it was an RBI single by Jose Altuve that was the first score of the game. On a wild pitch, Yordan Alvarez stole home to make it a 2-0 Astros lead in the Bottom of the 6th. I underrated big Yordan Alvarez's speed! Framber Valdez gets it done on a complete game shutout giving up four hits in Game 3. Oh, and... PERFECT HOMESTAND (6-0)!!!

UP NEXT: at MIL Brewers - 3 games, starting MON

The 2023 Houston Astros are now 27-19 on the 2023 season, still behind the Texas Rangers for 2nd in the AL West. Thank goodness we got José Altuve back in the lineup! It's time for another road trip for the Houston Astros Baseball Club. We're going to Milwaukee to meet the dangerous Millwaukee Brewers; and after that (and after a day off), we're at the Oakland Athletics for three. This will actually start a fairly long stretch of games without a day off for the Astros. First things first, though- at Milwaukee and at Oakland.

Congratulations to all series winners and all recent game winners!

The Reds were actually starting to play better of late. Then they lost 2 of 3 to the Rockies followed by a sweep at the hands of the Yankees. Now they have a 4 game set against the surging Cardinals. I'm not too optimistic.

How are our teams doing among active GTPlaneteers? Here's a quick update at the time of this post:

Houston Astros: 27-19
  • 2nd in AL West
  • 7 straight wins

Detroit Tigers: 20-24
  • 2nd in AL Central
  • 4 straight wins

New York Yankees: 29-20
  • 3rd in the AL East
  • 4 straight wins

Cincinnati Reds: 19-27
  • last in NL Central
  • 4 straight losses

New York Mets: 25-23
  • 2nd in NL East
  • 5 straight wins

Miami Marlins: 24-23
  • 3rd in NL East
  • lost last game

I'll have my HOU at MIL summary when that series concludes.

Houston is about to embark on a road trip. They will meet one of their NL Central foes, the Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers currently lead the NL Central. Therefore, the Astros know not to take the Brewers lightly. Can the Astros sober up the Brew Crew? Let's find out together...

* HOU Astros at MIL Brewers - 3 games

[GAME 1] When I first checked into the game, the Astros had a 2-1 lead in the Top of the 4th. I didn't follow the game since; but when I saw some highlights, we pounded five homers against the Brewers. Yordan Alvarez was responsible for two of those bombs, especially that bomb... uh, nuke of Grand Slam. End result? Astros ran over the Brewers 12-2 in Game 1 of this series.

[GAME 2] I'm thinking the Milwaukee Brewers didn't take too kindly to Houston smashing them last night. So, they did something about it- a solo jack in the Bottom of the 3rd to put the Brew Crew up 1-0. They'd cash in later on an error by the Astros in the Bottom of the 4th to go up 2-0. The Bottom of the 8th was like winning on a holeshot in drag racing. Milwaukee drove in two runs to make it 4-0, then Rafael Montero gets taken deep on a two-run jack. I stopped watching the game after that point. Say goodbye to the 8-game winning streak for the Astros. The Rubber Game of this series is tomorrow.

[GAME 3] I did not see this game at all, and the futility from yesterday continued. The Astros brought all of their offense in game 1, and did next to nothing in games 2 or 3. Brewers take the series and blank the Astros again, 4-0.

UP NEXT: at OAK Athletics - 3 games, starting FRI

The 2023 Houston Astros are now 28-21 on the 2023 season, still behind the Texas Rangers for 2nd in the AL West. I knew Milwaukee was going to be a tough test, and it certainly showed in games 2 and 3. The Astros somehow have this curse of being able to score double digit runs one game, then fall flat the next game. It bit Houston in the backside again. Well, back to AL West business next as a long stretch of games before the next day off happens. It's a three-game weekend series at the Oakland Athletics next for Houston. And in case you're wondering, Tampa Bay is currently 35-15, the best record in the AL and in baseball. Right now, Houston looks like an AL Wild Card contender. Sad thing is that Baltimore and the N.Y. Yankees have more wins than Houston.

Congratulations to all series winners and all recent game winners!

Houston hammers Milwaukee in Game 1, then get blanked twice in the two other games. It's time to see what 2nd Place AL West Houston can do at last place AL and worst record in baseball Oakland. Astros and Athletics. After Oakland swept us once last season, maybe we can return the favor. Let's get it!

* HOU Astros at OAK Athletics - 3 games

[GAME 1] The Houston Astros were first to light up the scoreboard on an RBI single in the Top of the 2nd. The Top of the 3rd saw an RBI single drop in nicely. Then later, a wild pitch leads to an Astro stealing Home. 3-0, Astros now. Throw in a two-run RBI double in the same inning, and make that a 5-0 Astros lead. Hunter Brown got taken deep on a two-run bomb to right by Oakland. The Astros lead was now 5-2 in the Bottom of the 7th. That was the final to this one- 5-2, Astros. The 2023 Oakland Athletics now has the most losses through 53 games since 1900 with their now 10-43 record.

[GAME 2] Houston got the party started with a two-run jack by Jeremy Peña in the Top of the 1st. The Oakland Athletics would light their side of the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly in the Bottom of the 2nd. The score became a 2-1 Astros lead. It remained 2-1 until the Astros exploded for four runs in the Top of the 8th to go up 6-1. A couple of RBIs drew Oakland closer trimming the Astros' lead down to 6-3. No further damage was made as the Astros held on for a 6-3 victory.

[GAME 3] When I checked into this game, it was 1-1 in the Bottom of the 1st. Both teams traded solo homers. It was "Air Yordan" that went yard for HOU, and then Ryan Noda went deep in the Bottom of the 1st for OAK. Jake Meyers bombed a three-run jack in the Top of the 4th to put Houston up 4-1. The ball left the yard again in the Top of the 7th, thanks to Chas McCormick (the "Chasmanian Devil") followed later by Jose Altuve in back-to-back-jacks fashion. Astros lead 6-1 at that point. To quote Lizzo, "about damn time"- struggle bus José Abreu finally bombed a homer as an Astro in the Top of the 8th. Abreu was so happy that he sprinted around the bases... and I didn't blame the dude! Astros now lead 7-1. Seagulls kind of invaded the ballpark in the Top of the 9th. The Astros went back-to-back jacks AGAIN. Two-run jack by Jeremy Peña followed by Yordan Alvarez bombing another homer. Astros led 10-1 hitting balls about as high as the seagulls. Every Astros score was by the home run ball. The Astros won 10-1 while The Texas Rangers lost 3-2 at Baltimore, so this gives the Astros a little help in the AL West.

UP NEXT: vs. MIN Twins - 3 games, starting MON

The 2023 Houston Astros are now 31-21 on the 2023 season, still behind the Texas Rangers for 2nd in the AL West. This stretch of 17 games in 17 days continues when we return home to host the Minnesota Twins for three games. That is followed by four games hosting the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. It's great to see the Astros slowly come back to form.

Congratulations to all series winners and all recent game winners!

I was pleasantly surprised by this week's performance by Cincy following their dismal last few series. A split against the Cardinals in their 4 game set and a sweep of the Cubbies. The offense came alive. They had a game with 18 hits, followed by one with 19 hits two games later, though somehow no balls went over the outfield wall in that game.

The young players have looked great. Spencer Steer is leading several hitting stats among rookies despite spending some time on the IL. Matt McLain came up to the Bigs two weeks ago and is only hitting at a ho-hum .380 clip. In the aforementioned 19-hit game, Hunter Greene, Eduardo Salazar, and Fernando Cruz pitched a 2 hitter in the 9-0 shutout performance. In fact, a no-hitter was in the works until Chicago looped a single in the 8th. Oh, and I can't leave out Elly De La Cruz, who is absolutely tearing it up at Triple A Louisville and is considered the top prospect in baseball by many at the moment. It's only a matter of time - and finding where to play him as he plays the same primary SS position as McLain - before we'll see him playing at GABP. In fact, there are a decent number of good looking players on the farm and nowhere to stick them at the top level. It's a good problem to have, especially with a team that is allergic to spending money for top players.

STL Series
Game 1: 6-5 Reds (walkoff)
Game 2: 8-5 Cardinals
Game 3: 10-3 Reds
Game 4: 2-1 Cardinals

CHI Series
Game 1: 9-0 Reds
Game 2: 8-5 Reds
Game 3: 8-5 Reds (again)

Best of all, Cincinnati passed BOTH St. Louis and Chicago in the standings! Amazingly, at 24-29, they are only 4 games back from the 28-25 Brew Crew in the division. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh has come back to earth at 26-26.

We're back home for another home stand. The Houston Astros will host the Minnesota Twins for a little series of baseball. Time to see what Houston can do against the AL Central leading Twins...

* MIN Twins at HOU Astros - 3 games

[GAME 1] Scoring first were the Minnesota Twins on a three-run homer to deep right in the Top of the 3rd. The Twins scored again on an RBI in the Top of the 4th. That curse of scoring double digits in one game and follow up with a loss continues for Houston so far, looking at a 4-0 deficit on this Memorial Day Monday afternoon. A groundout double play by the Astros still brought home a run in the Bottom of the 4th. So the Astros trimmed Minnesota's lead down to 4-1. José Altuve banged a Grand Slam to deep left in the Bottom of the 7th to get the go-ahead score. Astros now ahead 5-4 off of Altuve's second jack of the season. Welcome back, Altuve (who I nickname "The Little Giant"), who knocked down his 700th RBI! The jubilation was halted when the Twins scored on an RBI in the Top of 9th with two outs, denying Ryan Pressly's save attempt. So we're tied at 5-5 as the Twins didn't want to go out quiet. Regualation solved nothing, so we had to go to Extras. Very first pitch in the Top of the 10th, the Twins hit a two-run bomb to go up 7-5. The Twins were spoiling the Astros' comeback. The spoiling was complete as the Twins took Game 1 of this series.

[GAME 2] Can the Houston Astros force a Rubber Game on this Tuesday night after relief pitching blown an Astros win? Alex Bregman hit a "Breggy Bomb" to left to put the Astros up 1-0 in the Bottom of the 2nd followed by Chas McCormick with a two-run bomb of his own the same inning to make it 3-0. A-Breg bangs in an RBI single in the Bottom of the 3rd to put Houston up 4-0. A would-be Grand Slam by José Abreu was caught by Minnesota, but it was deep enough to bring Yordan Alvarez home on a sacrifice fly. 5-0 Astros now. In the Top of the 5th, the Twins banged in an RBI to make the Astros lead down to 5-1. That would be the final as the Astros force the Rubber Game- 5-1.

[GAME 3] Minnesota went up early in the Rubber Game 2-0 thanks to an RBI in the Top of the 3rd with the bases loaded. They added one more RBI that same inning to make it a 3-0 advantage for the Twins. Fast forward later into the Yop of the 7th, and the Twins were leading 8-0. I stopped watching afterwards. We ended up failing 8-2. A win would have helped since the Rangers lost at the Tigers earlier today.

--- REVIEW ---
GM1: (7-5, 10 innings; Minnesota)
GM2: (5-1; Houston)
GM3: (8-2; Minnesota)

UP NEXT: vs. LAA Angels - 4 games, starting THU

The 2023 Houston Astros are now 32-22 on the 2023 season, still behind the Texas Rangers for 2nd in the AL West. A big four-game series at home is coming up against the 3rd-place AL West Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Losing this series could drop the Astros down to 3rd in the AL West. An LAA sweep followed by more wins by the Mariners, and the Astros could find themselves fourth in the AL West. So the Astros need to win this series or split to keep up 2nd. They also need to hope the Rangers fail to help Houston's AL West cause.

Congratulations to all series winners and all recent game winners!

If the latest Twins/Astros series were the ALCS, Twins would be AL Champs based on this horrid performance by the Astros. Before the Astros hit the road again, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim wants to play some hard ball for a four-game set. Astros and Angels. Let's get it!

* LAA Angels at HOU Astros - 4 games

[GAME 1] It was the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim that got the scoring going first with an RBI in the Top of the 2nd. The Houston Astros would add their own RBI in the Bottom of the 2nd to tie the game at 1-1. The Angels drilled a left-center bomb to put LAA up 2-1 in the Top of the 5th. The Astros scored three in the Bottom of the 5th to go up 4-2 on RBIs. José Abreu smacks a deep RBI to left center that scored Kyle Tucker in the Bottom of the 8th. Astros now lead 5-2 with four unanswered runs. The Astros took Game 1 of this series with a 5-2 victory. Since the Rangers were off, they crept into the Rangers' AL West lead a bit with this win.

[GAME 2] When I first watched Game 2, it was 5-0 in the Top of the 7th, Astros with Shohei Ohrani dealing for LAA and Framber Valdez ("Framchise") for HOU. "King Tuck" bangs in an RBI in the Bottom of the 7th to deep left to put the Astros up 6-0. The Angels didn't go out quiet, as they banged in a couple RBIs in the Bottom of the 8th to make it 6-2. That was all they could muster, though. Astros take a 6-2 victory.

[GAME 3] The score was 1-0, Astros when I first followed the game going into the Top of the 3rd. A mishandled hit followed by a deep RBI by Shohei Ohtani helped the Angels tie the game at 1-1 in the Top of the 3rd. The Astros banged in an RBI in the Bottom of the 3rd to re-take the lead 2-1. Yordan Alvarez got an RBI single with the bases loaded in the Bottom of the 4th. 3-1 Astros now. Alex Bregman hit an ULTIMATE "Breggy Bomb"- a GRAND SLAM to deep left on just the second pitch by LAA's Jacob Webb. The Astros vaulted to a 7-1 lead after A-Breg's bomb. The Astros were falling apart in the Top of the 7th to let the Angels back into the game. It began with a Hunter Renfroe solo homer to make it 7-2, then three RBIs were scored by the Angels to cut the Astros lead to 7-5. The Astros promptly responded in the Bottom of the 7th with a Chas McCormick solo jack to right-center and then a Sacrifice Fly to make it a 9-5 Astros lead. The game was delayed a bit once the home plate umpire got hit in the mask by a foul ball. The Angels stole home in the Top of the 9th to trim the Astros' lead to 9-6. The relief pitching nearly choked the game, but the Astros still prevailed. The final score on Saturday was 9-6, Astros.

[GAME 4] The only action I saw was in the 9th inning, and it was a 2-1 Angels lead. Houston failed to sweep the series, falling 2-1 to the Angels. A sweep would have been great, but we still take the series.

GM1: (5-2; Houston)
GM2: (6-2; Houston)

UP NEXT: at TOR Blue Jays - 4 games, starting MON

The 2023 Houston Astros now are 35-24 on the 2023 season, still behind the Texas Rangers for 2nd in the AL West. Texas seems to wreck everybody in sight. It's time to road trip again. We got to the leave the United States for about four games and try to entertain the dangerous Toronto Blue Jays. Then after that, it's a three-game tilt at the Cleveland Guardians.

Congratulations to all recent series winners and game winners!

I didn't realize Pittsburgh had retaken the division lead. After Cincy's hot streak against the Cards, Cubs, and Red Sox - where they went 7-3 - they could only salvage the finale yesterday in their 4 game set against the Brew Crew. Luckily, the other two bottom teams are scuffling.

Bar the final inning of that game yesterday, I haven't seen a Reds game in about a week. When I have watched, it's been more exciting than expected seeing the guys come up from Triple A and really have an impact. That includes starting pitcher Andrew Abbott who made his debut last night. He only pitched 6 innings of 1 hit baseball with 6 K's and 0 runs allowed. Not a bad way to start your career. However, the big news is noted below.

It was cool to log onto the mlb.com webpage and see top Reds prospect Elly De La Cruz dominate the page. That's right, he's finally making his big league debut tonight. I can't believe I'm saying "finally" when the dude is only 21. Anyway, I'm pretty stoked! Probably overly so.

Time to hit the road again. The Houston Astros face a tough test in trying to ice the hot Toronto Blue Jays. America's Team- Astros. Canada's team- Blue Jays. Let's get it on, dawg!

* TOR Blue Jays at HOU Astros - 4 games

[GAME 1] José Altuve had an oblique injury, so he was out of the lineup for Game 1. The Houston Astros had the right strategy heading into this series- get on Toronto early. Timely hitting led to the Astros taking an early 2-0 lead in the Top of the 1st. Then with the bases loaded on the first pitch, Corey Julks bombs his first Grand Slam to make it a 6-0 Astros lead the same inning. With 38 pitches and only one out recorded, Alek Manoah faced an early exit to be replaced by Jay Jackson. This nightmare (or dream for HOU) inning ended up a 6-0 Astros lead in the Middle of the 1st. I didn't see the rest of the game, but the Houston Astros took this one 11-4.

[GAME 2] Houston took the early 1-0 lead on a low-line solo homer by Mauricio Dubon in the Top of the 1st. This was on the second pitch of the game! Toronto went ahead in the Bottom of the 3rd on a two-run jack by former Asto, George Springer. Another Blue Jay homer was jacked in the Bottom of the 4th by D. Varsho. Now it's 3-1, Blue Jays. Houston can't seem to win after nailing double-digit runs the previous game. First pitch from Rafael Montero ends up getting knocked out of the park. 4-1, Blue Jays, and I stopped watching the game afterwards. Toronto ended up plating another run to make it the final score of 5-1.

[GAME 3] The Houston Astros were tied 2-2 heading into the Bottom of the 7th when the Blue Jays knocked in a go-ahead run to make it 3-2. That was the final score- 3-2, Toronto.

[GAME 4] I will tell the Game 4 story from the End of the 5th (thanks to bad weather in the area). Toronto leads 3-2 at this point. That was the final score. Toronto really helped their cause should Houston and Toronto face some tie situation.

The 2023 Houston Astros now are 36-27 on the 2023 season, still behind the Texas Rangers for 2nd in the AL West. Canada won this USA/Canada match. Toronto simply outplayed us, and we left the majority of our offense in Game 1. The final set of games in this 17 games in 17 days will end with a trip to Progressive Field against the Cleveland Guardians. The start of this series was promising, but the three later games were the Astros' undoing. Texas will need to keep failing if Houston wants to fail as well so AL West status isn't affected too much. After all, misery loves company.

Congratulations to all recent series winners and game winners!

The Houston Astros will wrap up this road trip and this 17-game stretch with this series. Can the Astros finish the away trip on a positive note when they visit the Cleveland Guardians? Let's find out as the current 2nd-place AL West team meets the current 2nd-Place AL Central team...

* HOU Astros at CLE Guardians - 3 games

[GAME 1] Yordan Alvarez has an oblique injury and wasn't available for this game. Haters of José Abreu were silenced when he nailed a three-run low-line drive jack to right. Astros took a 3-0 lead in the Top of the 1st. A groundout led to an Astro crossing home to make it a 4-0 lead for Houston in the Top of the 2nd. A groundout in the Bottom of the 3rd lead to a Guardian making the Astros lead down to 4-1. By the end of the 6th inning, it was a 5-4 Astros lead. The game went to 6-6 in the Bottom of the 9th as the Astros failed to maintain a 6-5 lead. Regulation solves nothing. We now have extra innings in Cleveland. Kyle Tucker broke up the deadlock in the Top of the 12th with an RBI single for the Astros. It is now 7-6 in favor of Houston. The Astros failed to connect a double play, and so a Guardian crossed home plate to tie the game at 7. An almost Home Run by Mauricio Dubon ends up being a deep RBI to make it an 8-7 Astros lead in the Top of the 13th. An amazing catch by Cleveland overturned the call of an extra base hit that would have brought home two more Astros. So we stay at 8-7, Astros in the Middle of the 13th. This back-and-forth game now is 8-8 as Cleveland knocked in an RBI in the Bottom of the 13th. This is now the 2nd game this season to go to 14 games (Cubs at Marlins the other). Make it 9-8, Astros in the Top of the 14th thanks to a Kyle Tucker RBI. Cleveland ties things up AGAIN. We're at 9-9 thanks to a Cleveland extra base hit in the Bottom of the 14th. The Guardians then bang in a deep RBI to left to Walk Off the Astros. The Guardians outduel the Astros and put the Astros' losing streak at 4.

[GAME 2] I was in full 24 Hours of Le Mans mode and slightly followed this game. It was about 5-1, Astros in the 6th inning. It ended up 6-4, Houston Astros once the game ended. The Rubber Game is tomorrow afternoon.

[GAME 3] I didn't get to see for follow this game. Cleveland got the last laugh, as the Astros lose back-to-back series and have a losing road trip. Guardians take this series by winning Game 3 5-0.

GM1: (10-9, 14 innings; Cleveland)
GM2: (6-4; Houston)
GM3: (5-0; Cleveland)

UP NEXT: vs. WSH Nationals - 3 games, starting TUE

The 2023 Houston Astros now are 37-29 on the 2023 season, [somehow] still behind the Texas Rangers for 2nd in the AL West. Sure- Cleveland had a losing record heading into this series. That is half the story. The other half, though, is that Cleveland is 2nd in their division. So they couldn't be THAT bad. Houston, meanwhile, hasn't been the juggernaut like the 2022 and defending Champion Astros. Not having Yordan Alvarez for this series hurt the offensive production for this past series. Their next stretch of games involve nine games in nine days. They are going to need to win more and hope everyone else stumbles. The Astros are currently 3rd in the AL Wild Card rankings behind Baltimore and New York Yankees. They're home to host the Washington Nationals in a 2019 World Series rematch. Washington just snapped a long losing streak while the Astros just lost after a win.

Congratulations to all recent series winners and game winners!

The Reds have been as exciting as hoped the last two series, taking 2 of 3 against both the Dodgers and the Cards. Elly De La Cruz has been as advertised. In the first two games alone, he had a single, double, triple, and his first home run that landed in the top row in right field, just a couple of feet from leaving the stadium. Adam Dunn territory. He also contributed with multiple stolen bases, hilariously ran right through a stop sign by the 3rd base coach to easily score from first and nearly passed runner in front of him, broke home from 3rd on a ball hit to the shortstop where he should have been easily thrown out only to score anyway, and outlegged what should have been a routine bouncer to the first baseman because he beat the pitcher to the bag. He did have some strikeouts as the pitching has been trying to figure out how to pitch him, but I'll gladly trade those for the offense he has put up.

Also, Matt McLain has continued to mash. With fellow rookie Spencer Steer still hitting well, there could be three legitimate ROY contenders on the team. Oh, and Andrew Abbott pitched an additional 5 2/3 innings of no run ball in his second start. That means he's given up 0 runs in 11 2/3 innings to begin his career. The youth movement is in full effect and fun to watch. I'm fully aware some guys will come back down to earth as teams adjust and injuries are always just around the corner. Of the pitching trio I was boasting about early in the season, only Greene is semi-healthy at the moment. Ashcraft and Lodolo are both on the IL. Speaking of pitching, it's somewhat worrying. The starters have struggled lately, and the bullpen has been inconsistent at best. Except closer Alexis Diaz. He has been money and looks to be as good as his brother, Edwin. Fun fact, Diaz converted 20 straight saves. The only pitcher to currently have a longer streak? Yep, his brother with 22. Though that won't be changing until he gets back from the injury he suffered celebrating a win in the WBC.

This team has a lot of fight in them. They are second in baseball in comeback wins. I've heard my dad talk about the Big Red Machine of the 70s. He said he was never worried about them if they were losing early in the game. If they were down, they had a knack of coming back to win anyway. Now, I am NOT saying this team is the next Big Red Machine! But there are some comparisons to be made.

Almost forgot. Cincy is now 31-35, four games back from Pittsburgh and three back from the Brew Crew. They get the second worst team in the majors for 3 games. That would be KC. Fingers crossed that we're only 1 game under .500 by the end of the series.

I'll go ahead and assess my Astros for this post.

While they have endured a lot in 2023, the Houston Astros are 37-29 on the season. They are 2nd in the AL West and are in 3rd place of the AL Wild Card race behind the Orioles and Yankees. A litiny of injuries and some offensive lulls have defined the rather substandard flow of the season for Houston. The team has done fairly well with other players stepping in for some of the hurt or injured talent. Mauricio Dubon has been a great player taking over for José Altuve while he was hurt. Yordan Alvarez recently was put on the IL, but Yordan been doing Yordan things. Jeremy Peña has been lovely on offense and defense. Chas McCormick is his own defensive beast. Kyle Tucker ("King Tuck") makes some timely hits. The one real disappointment has been José Abreu. Shipping off Yuli Gurriel for José Abreu hasn't entirely fanned out. He gets some hits in, but is usually commonly a strikeout victim. He did launch a few bombs.

The pitching has been fairly well but nothing to seriously write home about. Two of the Astros' key talents in pitching are still on the shelf- Lance McCullers Jr. and Luis Garcia. The bullpen has blown some games, but there is still plenty of talent to go around. Hunter Brown has been a very good pitcher, especially when firing mid-90s sliders.

Houston's mantra this season is "Ready to Reign." They are not going to run away to a Championship this season. This season seems more about survival than being in Beast Mode. While this season is at about the 40% complete mark, this is still plenty of time for the Astros to build up some steam and make a run towards maybe winning the AL West, and maybe even have the best AL record. But for that to happen, the Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays will have to cool off significantly while the Astros get hot. It is doable. Thing is... can the Astros shine despite their dull moments so far this season? That will be the factor of how the 2023 season ends for the defending World Series Champions.

There's my assessment. If you want to assess your favorite team(s), go ahead.

Cincy completed their sweet of the Royals yesterday. They are on quite a roll, with 5 straight W's and 8 in their last 10. Two of those wins were against an actual decent team, the Dodgers. The others, however, were against the faltering Cardinals (and aforementioned Royals). So, I'm not sure just how good they really are. They did bang out 4 homers yesterday in the great expanse that is Kaufmann Stadium - including 3 in one inning - despite being in the bottom 5 in home runs in all of baseball. These young players are exciting and have some pop in their bats to go along with tremendous speed.

The Redlegs have made their way to one game under .500 at 34-35, only 1.5 games back from Pittsburgh and half a game behind the Brew Crew. This was supposed to be a rebuild year, and they seem to be well ahead of schedule and actually contending. Are they World Series ready? No. Maybe not even quite post season ready. The offense has been hot but surely will be slowed down as teams adjust to them. Pitching has been sketchy, and several pitchers are still chilling on the IL. The next handful of years should be fun to watch, though.

The next test is a series facing @JohnBM01's Astros starting tomorrow night. I'll be happy if we take 1 win if I'm honest. I fear we could be in for a rude awakening.

The Houston Astros will return home after a losing road trip. Toronto and Cleveland were none too kind to the defending Champions on this road trip. Three NL teams will come to Houston in this home stand. We got the Nationals, the Reds, and the Mets coming on down to H-Town. First order of business is our 2019 World Series opponent as well as the team we share Spring Training facility with- the Washington Nationals. It's GO TIME.

* WSH Nationals at HOU Astros - 3 games

[GAME 1] I have to make sure I don't confuse Washington's Luis Garcia with Houston's Luis Garcia. Tonight was Star Wars night, and Astros fans were hoping the Force be with the Astros. There were four innings of scoreless baseball until Mauricio Dubon bombed a solo jack to left to strike first in the Bottom of the 5th. Kyle Tucker was the only left-hander in the Astros' batting order, and the Southpaw "King Tuck" bombed his own solo homer in the Bottom of the 5th. Another solo homer by Martin Maldonaldo was crushed by the Astros in the Bottom of the 7th along with an RBI to make it 4-0, Astros. José Altuve logged his 1000th RBI with the Astros and is one of only three active players to have 1K runs all with one team (Joey Votto of CIN and Mike Trout of LAA the others). A double followed by a deep hit helped Washington get on the board in the Top of the 8th. So make it 4-1, Astros in the Middle of the 8th. Chas McCormick went yard in the Bottom of the 8th to make it a 5-1 advantage for the Astros. An RBI by José Altuve the same inning made it a 6-1 Astros lead. That was the final score as Hunter Brown picked up the win, while Patrick Corbin took the loss. The Astros accomplished three feats in this game- 1000 runs scored for José Altuve, 1500 career hits for José Abreu, and the 100th home run of Martin Maldonaldo's career.

[GAME 2] The Houston Astros struck first in the Bottom of the 1st with a deep RBI that brought two Astros home. For the first time at home, José Abreu hit a home run. It was a solo jack in the Bottom of the 4th. There were two solo jacks by the Astros in the 4th as Yanier Diaz made it a 4-0 game. Washington cut the defecit to 4-1 thanks to an RBI in th Top of the 5th. It was 4-1... then the relief pitching blows what would have been a 4-1 game in the Top of the 9th. Astros errors and timely hitting by the Nationals tied the game at 4-4. So now the Astros were looking at either walking it off or going to extra innings rather than get what should have been a 4-1 win. The Nationals pulled a double play that would force Extra Innings, but a game-winning error forgives the sins of the Astros' relief pitching. Astros win 5-4 in a wild 9th inning that should have never gotten to this level.

[GAME 3] There was no scoring at all until the Washington Nationals bombed a solo homer to right in the Top of the 9th. Ryan Pressly has been struggling lately closing games; and considering last night's controversial ending, Washington decided to do something about that loss. Astros had life left by tying the game at 1-1 on a Yanier Diaz RBI down to their last out. Regulation solved nothing. We go to Extras, and the Astros have been pathetic in Extra Inning games this season. The Nationals took a 2-1 lead on an RBI in the Top of the 10th. Next came a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-1, Nationals. Anoher RBI was cashed in by Washington, and it was now 4-1, Washington at the Middle of the 10th. After that, I stopped watching, much like when I stopped watching when the Nationals won the 2019 World Series here in Houston in Game 7. The Astros won this series, but fail to close out the last-place NL East Washington Nationals. The Nationals escape Houston with a 4-1 victory in 10 innings.

UP NEXT: vs. CIN Reds - 3 games, starting FRI

The 2023 Houston Astros now are 39-30 on the 2023 season, [somehow] still behind the Texas Rangers for 2nd in the AL West. Oh, boy... my boys got to go against my good mate, Dolph Drago and the Cincinnati Reds next. Then after this series, my Astros got to deal with my other good mate, Blitz24 and the New York Mets. But first things first: Reds come on down to H-Town. Anyhow- "Houston vs. all y'all."

Congratulations to all recent series winners and game winners! Hopefully your teams are doing well.

José Altuve logged his 1000th RBI with the Astros and is one of only three active players to have 1K runs all with one team (Joey Votto of CIN and Mike Trout of LAA the others).
Congrats to Altuve! That's quite the feat. I'm just glad he didn't wait until this weekend to do it.

Fun fact: Despite having only been to maybe 6, 7? Reds games in the last 10 years, I happened to be at the one Votto nabbed that 1000th RBI - a long bomb. I didn't even plan to go the game that night...but free tickets are free tickets. Lucky timing for me. :D Of course as soon as we gave up the lead, it started pouring down rain immediately and the game never resumed, resulting in a loss.

I...have no words.
Oh, I got plenty. Check it...

Once upon a time, the Houston Astros and Cincinnati Reds were conference rivals in the NL Central. The Astros moved on to the AL West since 2013. So now these two are Interleague rivals. We can still pretend Houston and Cinninati are still NL Central conference foes. This is also happens to be an inner-forum rivalry between myself and Dolph Drago. Let's get it!

* CIN Reds at HOU Astros - 3 games

[GAME 1] The score when I first followed was 2-0, Reds in the Bottom of the 7th. There is recent ineptitude of Astros' offense ever since getting roughed up by the Washington Nationals last night 4-1 in 10 innings. Houston managed one run on an RBI in the Bottom of the 9th to make it a 2-1 Reds lead, but the Cincinnati Reds got the last laugh. And what do you know? Another one-run game for the Reds that went in the favor of Cincinnati. Reds now on a six-game winning streak. Cincy wins Game 1 2-1.

[GAME 2] I went to an anime convention today, so I didn't get to follow the game. I was shocked when I saw the Reds won Game 2 convinginly. How much so? Try 10-3. Seven straight wins for the Reds now, and now four straight losses by the Astros. Things became more disappointing knowing many of the teams they are in contention also lost today. Typical- Houston fails, yet everyone else also fails. Houston wins, yet everyone else also wins. Can we get a break for a change?

[GAME 3] It was 5-2, Astros, in the Top of the 6th when I first followed this game. An EBI by Cincinnati followed by Spencer Steer steering his Reds to a tie with a two-run bomb to left-center. This game was tied at 5-5 in the Middle of the 6th. Cincy went ahead finally thanks to a solo homer to deep right by Jonathan India. The Astros tied the game at 6-6 in the Bottom of the 9th on a deep RBI. However, it wasn't deep enough for a walk-off win. This game ended up going to extra innings. The Astros have lost every extra innings game so far this season (0-5 in extra inning games). The Reds put up three runs in the Top of the 10th, and I stopped watching after that third RBI came home. Astros managed one run but not much more. The Astros were last swept at home some time back in 2021. Astros were swept only once last year (by OAK), now they get swept for the first time since that. Eight game winning streak for the Reds and five straight losses for the Astros.

GM1: (2-1; Cincinnati)
GM2: (10-3; Cincinnati)
GM3: (9-7, 10 innings; Cincinnati)

UP NEXT: vs. NYM Mets - 3 games, starting MON

The 2023 Houston Astros now are 39-33 on the 2023 season, now 3rd in the AL West behind the Rangers and Angels. Five straight losses now for the defending Champions. I'm not going to make excuses, but we're not at full strength, therefore making the Astros very vulnerable all season long. Injuries and inept offense have quieted the Astros from their 2022 form. Yet still, Cincinnati came in and swept both Texas teams. The way Cincy played, they should probably have a better record than what they have currently. Winning this series now puts Cincinnati at or near the top of the wacky NL Central. And I guess if Houston (or even Texas) makes the World Series, I'd already feel bad for whomever plays them. From one GTPlanet inner-forum rivalry to another. Now, it's Blitz24's Mets coming to Houston for the next series. Considering the Mets' issues, it would feel like rock bottom for the Astros to get swept by the Mets. Well played, Dolph Drago. I'll go cry in a corner now.

Congratulations to all recent series winners and game winners! Hopefully your teams are doing well.

Now I've had some time to collect my thoughts. This recent stretch (even precluding the win streak) has been something else. Included:
  • Very gritty play. I've never seen a team so aggressive on the base paths. Stretching singles into doubles, doubles into triples, 1st to 3rd on singles, 1st to HOME on some hits, tagging up and taking bases, beating out infield hits, now 2nd in the majors in stolen bases
  • Suddenly they're blasting home runs??
  • 1 run WINS as opposed to all those 1 run losses they were taking earlier in the year
  • Comeback wins, a ton of them
  • Extra inning wins
  • Solid bullpen work for the most part
  • Rookie Andrew freakin' Abbott - 17 2/3 innings pitched, 0 runs allowed. Fun stat - 2nd MLB pitcher to begin career since 1901 with 3 straight scoreless starts of 5+ IP. Some dude named George McQuillan last did it in 1907.
  • Did I mention the last 9 games were part of a road trip? After dropping their first game in STL, they went 8-1 in that period. They are the only NL Central team with a positive Away record.
The Brewers finished off a sweep of their own against Pittsburgh. In fact, the Pirates have dropped 6 straight. So despite the latest series, Cincy they did not gain on Milwaukee. They remain half a game behind.

Houston is sweeping New York. The Mets might go down as the most disappointing team of all time after what was expected of them. The team goes through cycles where they either cannot hit, or they cannot pitch. They have one of the worst pitching staffs in baseball that gives up too many HRs, and their only pitching bright spots are Kodai Senga, who has not fully adjusted to a 5 man rotation, and David Robertson, who is being overused. Verlander and Scherzer are not consistent, and the team seldomly gets a SP into the 7th inning. I would not be stunned if this team somehow loses 100 games.

The Houston Astros are not at full strength. The way they've been playing of late, I'd be surprised if the Astros lose this series to the Mets, or even get swept. I always want to be proven wrong about my doubts. Still, I'm sure one would say "I stand corrected" if the Mets win/sweep the at Astros series. We'll see what happens.

The Mets haven't won a road series since April and have only won 3 road series all year.

Well, you can't sweep if you don't win every game of the series. Not only did Houston lose on Monday, they lost BAD. Try 11-1. I'll do the full series summary when it concludes. Right now, though, the Astros are trending towards rock bottom. There is thankfully still a lot of season left.

Swept by the Cinncinati Reds, five straight losses, dropping to 3rd in the AL West... can the Houston Astros find Heaven through the Hell they have endured? Maybe hosting the New York Mets could help... or hurt? Two teams that came into Major League Baseball the same year (1962) and wear blue and orange will clash in Houston for three games. Let's get it!

* NYM Mets at HOU Astros - 3 games

[GAME 1] When I checked my smartphone, it was 5-0 Mets after three innings. Geez, Louise. Part of that included a solo homer and later a three-run bomb. The Metropolitans made it 6-0 around the 6th inning. Man, the Astros have fallen apart with these injuries and offensive lulls. Astros avert the shutout with a solo jack by Y. Diaz in the Bottom of the 7th. Other than that, it was over. The game ended up being an 11-1 fail by the Astros.

[GAME 2] Framber Valdez vs. Justin Verlander. The Houston Astros lit the scoreboard first on a sacrifice fly in the Bottom of the 3rd to make it 1-0. Alex Bregman hit a "Breggy Bomb" to left to make it a 3-0 advantage. Astros sick of losing and decided to do something about it. The Astros put in another RBI in the Bottom of the 7th to make it a 4-0 Astros advantage. Can the Astros hold onto a late lead for a change? Both Valdez and Verlander pitched seven innings into this game with Valdez going eight. The Mets found home plate twice in the Top of the 8th. It was a sacrifice fly followed by an RBI for the Mets to cut the lead to 4-2. That was the final score as the Astros snapped their 5-game losing streak. Rubber Game before their long road trip begins tomorrow afternoon.

[GAME 3] On this Wednesday afternoon game, it was a bullpen game for the Astros. The Astros went ahead first by stealing home followed by an RBI single put Houston up 2-0 in the Bottom of the 1st. Christian Javier's pitching was absolutely shoddy. That shoddy pitching led to the Mets tying it up at 2-2 in the Top of the 2nd, and then taking a go-ahead 3-2 lead on a sacrifice fly the same inning. fast forward to the Bottom of the 3rd, and Chas McCormick hit a two-run bomb to put the Astros ahead 6-4. The Top of the 4th saw the Mets tie things again. This time, a 6-6 tie. That tie was broken up by Houston with an RBI single in the Bottom of the 4th, followed by a beautiful bomb to left by Yanier Diaz that scored two runs. Now it's 9-6, Astros. The Mets clobbered a two-run homer to left-center in the Top of the 6th to make it a 9-8 Astros lead. One more run by the Astros in the Bottom of the 7th was scored on a sacrifice bunt with the bases loaded by Martin Maldonaldo that scored Corey Julks. After a dismal whacking on Monday, the Houston Astros won the series with a 10-8 victory today.

UP NEXT: at LAD Dodgers - 3 games, starting FRI

The 2023 Houston Astros now are 41-34 on the 2023 season, currently tied for 2nd in the AL West behind the Rangers and Angels at the time of this post. If the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim lose tonight hosting the Los Angeles Dodgers, we'll be 2nd in the AL West. Houston will embark on a brutally long and treacherous road trip- 3 at the Dodgers, 3 at the Cardinals, and then 4 at the Texas Rangers. The biggest series for Houston coming up will be the four at the Rangers.

Anyhow, good series between my Astros and Blitz24's Mets. I wished we brought the offense in Games 2 and 3 to Game 1. We'll still take the series win.

Elsewhere...

What got into the Reds lately? I heard Cincinnati has one of the longet win streaks in team history since 1899. Eleven straight wins (including them sweeping my Astros). Wow!

Congratulations to all recent series winners and game winners! What has/have your team(s) done of late?

The Reds made it 10 straight last night, then 11 today. Longest win streak for the franchise since 1957. Unfortunately I missed today's game because it was a 12 o'clocker and I was at work. Andrew Abbott finally gave up a run. In fact, he allowed 3 balls to go over the fence, the first being on the second pitch of the game. The good thing? They were all solo shots, meaning minimal damage was done. His biggest issue coming into the game? Walks. How many did he have in today's game? 0. Nada. Zilch. Combine that with 10 strikeouts, only 1 additional hit, and lasting 6 innings, and I would say job well done once again, Mr. Abbott. He kept the team in the game, and they did their usual thing. The offense made their comeback and the bullpen nailed down the victory.

Cincy is officially leading the NL Central at 40-35, a game and a half up on the Brewers after their loss today. Who could have seen this coming? 100 losses last year to the division lead the following June. Could they pull off a miracle feat like their Bengal compatriots in the Queen City? Now that would be fun to see!

They will lose again eventually, but I'm enjoying the heck out of the current stretch. Next on the docket is the top NL team, i.e. the Atlanta Braves. That series starts Friday, so the team will take the day get some rest and celebrate their recent success.
