Came across this video while casually surfing YouTube...

My guess is that this footage was shot relatively early in GT2's development. Reflections on the car models and sound seem identical to the original. Not to mention the HUD is lifted straight from Gran Turismo.

Give the video a watch, it sheds light on some interesting topics; such as where the license tests derived from. Also it turns the spotlight onto the key personnel behind Kazunori Yamauchi. Not to mention the insight it gives on vehicle and course modeling. All of this I found extremely intriguing, so I decided to share the video. Hope you enjoy!

Nice find! Now I know why we have to take a damn Viper through the corkscrew for that license test...

You needn't remind me. :nervous: Braking too early will result in a poor time, although at least you'll set a time. Brake too late and the only gold you'll be seeing will be your fillings. Judging where the correct braking point lies is a challenge. Although once you've located it the car still seems bent on throwing itself into the sand. Mind you, the sense of achievement once you've mastered it is worth the effort. :)

Footage looks like the E3 1999 build, but I could be wrong.

It looks identical to it though.

You know, I believe I am yet to see the E3 1999 build. Any images or videos laying around that you are aware off? My search hasn't yielded any results so far. :indiff:

This is a pic on the same build I believe.

Awesome, had a feeling it would be. Would be great if someone had that, i'd love to research into it.

I remember seeing early builds of GT3 and such, but not GT2. I enjoyed this video a lot. Kinda feel upset they tested the C5 Corvette but never got to include it though.

So why was the corkscrew so tight and why did it have a huge drop off in GT2?
As that is the nature of the bend in reality? Correct me if I am mistaken. :)

It looks like they used Infineon Raceway for some of the real world car testing between 3:38 and 4:03. :D
Glad to see I am not the only one to have noticed! 👍

I was just watching the Porsche RennSport Reunion on Speed at Laguna Seca, and though other parts of the track seem slightly different, the corkscrew appears to be the same in GT2 and reality...

Wow, that's a cool video. It really makes you appreciate GT2 for what it is. It's too bad PD doesn't come out with an officially-sanctioned, full-length documentary about the inspiration for the series and making of all the games. I'd shell out some money for that!

Definitely, it would be amazing. :) Someday I'd love to see the creation of the original documented in a detailed manner. Obviously during the development of the first game, Gran Turismo was unestablished. Therefore news and hype surrounding it was minuscule compared to Gran Turismo 2 and onwards. So who knows to what extent the final release of Gran Turismo matched Kazunori Yamauchi's vision. In some areas, the concept may have been altered quite drastically. Although it is a relative unknown, it is certainly food for thought. :)

Why is it not as sharp in GT4 and GT5?

Laguna Seca was upgraded between 2001 and 2004. Quite possibly during that time, they modified the Corkscrew a fraction and the alteration was reflected in Gran Turismo 4. Not to say that is for certain, it is only a guess.

And I am not talking about the corner radius, but the way it drops.

In GT2 you could fly over it and still be on course if you went to fast or bottom out if you went to close to the inside, but in GT4 and GT5 you just go flying in to the sand/tire wall and if you go to the inside you rarely bottom out.

Can't say I understand why that is, to be honest. Although the kerbs at the Corkscrew in Gran Turismo 2 are higher than in later editions. So when you mention the inside, is that what you meant? The kerbs?
