Mazda sticks with rotary power

I think the only solution is run massive overlap with direct injection and an electric motor to provide torque up to like 5,000rpm.

Nah, for daily driving having the electric motor to add some torque up to ~2k would be plenty.

The hybrid system that Nissan uses (which isn't all that good) gives a nice little spurt of torque from a dead stop and it's pretty effective on a 4-cylinder.

And Mazda with misguided choices? Like what?

Seriously.... What misguided choices?

What misguided choices?

Don't get me wrong, they've got a great lineup as is. But, they've dropped the ball on a few things:

  1. We were due to get a diesel option in the 6, along with a 6 wagon, and we've gotten neither - and last we've heard, it seems Mazda has almost entirely given up on delivering both options to North America. Greater variation in the 6 would be a good way to get it into more driveways, particularly when they are offering more of the niche options that, other than VW, no one seems to be offering
  2. The entire 2 fiasco for the US seems so incredibly strange, particularly for a company that is desperate to get more products into people's hands. My guess is that the inked deal with Toyota visa vie the iA prevents the 2 from coming on the market for a while, and I suppose money is money, but I'd have figured they'd have more success with both a model and a brand that is known for great quality and great performing cars than going off to one that is teetering on the edge of oblivion
  3. I've elaborated on it before, but their packaging on their cars needs to be seriously updated, or altered completely. Simple options are put together in a way that greatly increases the price of the vehicle in order to get one thing that most people would want - alloy wheels, fog lights, etc - and it comes off in a pretty negative light. I get that Mazda wants/needs to make money, but forcing someone to add $3000 worth of options to get something that should be available on any trim level just doesn't feel right
  4. And while I absolutely understand that this is a personal thing, not offering the CX-3 with a stick in the US seems like the most un-Mazda thing Mazda could do

Now, I fully understand that Mazda is a much smaller company, and as such, has to make very careful decisions when doing just about anything, regardless of what the internet, armchair CEOs, and Doug DeMuro may think. On the whole, Mazda is a shining light in a very dark and dreary market. I can't think of a single brand that offers as many models that I'd put at the top, or so very near the top, on what I'd personally buy every time. But, there are definitely things that I'd think they should've and could of have done better with.

Only thing I can speak on, is probably #1 & #4. If Mazda see the (USA)market doesnt want to deal with manually shifting gears in that segment of vehicle, Mazda are being smart. The 6 diesel, I don't know sales figures on diesels over there but, can't be that high in high volume passenger cars to justify sending it over.

I wish automakers would collaborate more on sportscars like Mazda/Fiat, Toyota/Subaru and Toyota/BMW. Imagine Mazda working its way into the Toyota-BMW sportscar partnership with an RX-x successor... Toyota could have the hybrid sportscar, BMW the high end sportscar, and Mazda the raw turbo rotary. The thought of a chassis tuned by Mazda and BMW, too... Tingles.

Can it be? Please say so Mazda!

No way! Even if so, I wonder if it'll ever get pass the concept phase.

Also why do articles always say RX-7 revival? Does the RX-8 just not exist or something?

RX-8 was technically not a replacement for the RX-7, more like a separate model. And with the RX-7's history, more people relate to it I guess. (I've owned 3 of them)

The RX-7 had a good 20-ish year run as a car everyone loved and (usually) bought in pretty great numbers. The RX-8 had 3 or so years where everyone loved it and it sold well and regularly was featured in magazine tests and yearly awards; and then Mazda might as well have stopped making it for all the good the following five years did.

Man you guys are so fast.
I just wanted to post the news. :P
I really hope to see a new RX-7 with a new powerful rotary engine... maybe the 16X? ;)
I also hope Mazda will stick to the spirit of the fd3s... no hybrid garbage...

The design in the teaser gives me vibes of Cosmos instead of RX, unless Mazda is deciding to take the RX name upmarket from the previous models.

Those taillights are spot on inspired from the FD.

I don't (and can't) see anything but the rotary will be put under that long bonnet...

The only thing that could is the rumored 2.5L turbo 4-cylinder that is supposed to end up in several vehicles including a new Mazdaspeed3 & 6. But with a 1967 Cosmo planned for the display stand as well, it hopefully means Rotary.

It looks like it would be more upmarket model IMHO, to take a swing at Jag and low end Porsches..

Here's an idea:

As a benefit to their partnership with Toyota, Mazda also gets to use that new rear-drive architecture that'll probably go beneath the next Supra and BMW Z-car. Just, uh, with a Wenkel. Probably.

I'll buy that for a dollar.

Pricing will have to be right. More than a Mazda6 diesel or CX-5 Akera and less than a CX9(?). Anyway, it's a concept. We'll see.

I hope it's not Cosmo. Why? Because that thing came with 4-speed auto only if memory serves.
