Mazda sticks with rotary power

Classy and stylish exterior, simple and straight to the point interior.

Keep the rotary alive, Mazda.

The interior is the most striking thing for me. It's very bare-bones, almost Lotus or TVR-esque.

In fact, the whole thing reminds me of a TVR or a Marcos. It's very flowing and simplistic, but its size and stance keeps it menacing.

I think it looks remarkably average. There's just not enough there for my taste.

But hey, maybe Aston and Mazda are still part of the same company after all.

Reminds me a lot of the new AMG GT, very nice looking rear end. Keen to hear more about the engine, it needs to be turbo if they want to be competitive by todays standards where anything under 400hp is slow.

Given it's Mazda, I'm sure they'll make the weight mitigate that.

And most of those cars are hella expensive except for cheap cars with a V8 (Mustang, Camaro, etc). I think a modern 3-Rotor should be able to put out that kind of power especially with some help from an electric motor.

@Keef

I think this is the car that balances the proud powerful, and stately, long horizontality with purposeful and sporty rakish athleticism, like I've seen no other car except maybe the SLS-AMG accomplish.

As long as it doesn't consume engines like a 13B-REW or oil and gas like a Renesis, this will be a hit.

Paging Maranello, this is how you do styling.

Where is that cat pic with the heavy breathing? My Lord. Look at the steering wheel. How classic can a modern car be with that wheel? Those front and rear overhangs(do not exist). Welcome back RE Amemiya.

I've just noticed, I can only see one shutline at the front (after the arch). Must be a clamshell bonnet. Reminds me of the E-type's clamshell bonnet.. It's certainly as beautiful as one. I wonder whether they'll carry that touch over into the production model.

Who gives a rats arse. If I have to feed it puppies and baby seals to keep it running, then so be it. ;)

Good thing I'm in Canada, we have such a large supply of the latter!

What a show-stopper. If I'm to pick a nit, the amount of sheet metal between the tire and leading edge of the door seems a little too much. But really, it's gorgeous. I'm seeing so much of the RX-7 lineage in it, and I love that it's not festooned with "styling" for the sake of it. Unadorned and beautiful, like the DB9 before it got all the tat thrown at it.

One does wonder slightly why the bonnet is so long. In an Aston or a Jag, it's because they've got some enormously long 8 or 12 cylinder engine to cram in there. But a rotary's one claim to fame (apart from the world's most giggle-inducing name) is that it's very small for the power it produces.

I feel like there'd be a lot of spare room under that bonnet, even with turbos and maybe extra rotors or hybrid systems as well. Presumably they'll use it for something, they wouldn't stick another three feet of car on for no reason. It'd still look pretty good with a shorter nose, so I wonder what tricks they're going to pull with all that space?

Me too. I love that they got a good shape and had the discipline to stop there, instead of trying to bling it up with extra lines and adornments. Those smooth curves make it one of the sexiest cars in recent memory.

But Mazda and Aston Martin are now independent from Ford... It does look somewhat underwhelming but at least it's not as odd as the ND MX-5
