Mazda sticks with rotary power

Rotaries are amazing, hoping this will be an even better one. 👍

What would be great is if this led to an engine in the Mazda DPi in the WSCC in the next few years.

Honestly, to see any factory team use one in any form of racing would be nice. Once Speed Source moved to the Skyactiv platform, I was worried it was legit the end of the engine. Would be nice to see Speed Source start using a Skyactiv R.

I think that, if Mazda marketing is in charge, that'd be the eventual idea. But, a lot of things need to be clarified in that LMP class before it can happen.

I noticed that he said "some sort of compressor or turbo"

I've always thought a 2 rotor with a centrifugal supercharger would be absolutely awesome. Even a screw-type blower would be pretty good. Anything that preserves a linear powerband and excellent throttle response is great in my book.

Mazda RX-Vision named 'Most Beautiful Concept'

RX-Vision honoured at 31st Festival Automobile Internation

Paris / Leverkusen: The Mazda RX-VISION, a stunning rotary-powered sports car concept, captured the “Most Beautiful Concept Car of the Year” award at the 31st Festival Automobile International.

Ikuo Maeda, the company’s international design chief, accepted the award Tuesday evening together with Kevin Rice, Mazda’s European design director, Julien Montousse, his counterpart at Mazda North America, and Mazda designer Norihito Iwao (all pictured above).

It’s another honour for Mazda’s global design division, which took home three prizes in September at the Automotive Brand Contest 2015 including the prestigious “Team of the Year” award.

The RX-VISION was nominated this year alongside the Bentley Exp10 Speed 6, Peugeot Fractal, and Porsche Mission E. Mazda’s concept shared the podium with the latter.

Unveiled at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show in November, the RX-VISION exemplifies Mazda’s challenger spirit.

The company’s latest concept car is a truly striking rendition of its ‘KODO - Soul of Motion’ design philosophy.

The smooth-flowing proportions scream performance while paying tribute to Mazda’s rich heritage of front engine, rear-wheel drive sports cars. Indeed, the rotary powertrain’s compactness makes characteristics like the low bonnet possible. Fans of the brand are certainly eager to see this creation go into production.

The RX-VISION will be on display at the Festival Automobile International’s concept car exhibition in Paris at the Hôtel National des Invalides until 31 January.

The concept award goes to the vehicle that best embodies pure design creativity and emerging trends.

It is one of four grand prizes at the annual event, with the winners chosen by a jury of experts and enthusiasts from the world of motorsports, architecture, fashion and design.

All I can I say is this; it was kind of Mazda to not boycott their Geneva appearance, it would be unfair and quite frankly ridiculous to keep the RXV away from European eyes. It's as Evo said; perhaps Honda could take a few design lessons from an uncluttered simple design in lieu of bringing forth cars such as the new Clarity...

I do wonder where did the orange come from, as it's not a common color in Mazda's catalogue.

Still think this car looks gorgeous. Be really interesting to see (if Mazda do decide to make it), what it will look like after the removal of the concept car cues.

Mazda has patented a new rotary engine:

This is actually the first significant change to the engine architecture since Mazda debuted the rotary. The intake is now on the bottom and the exhaust is now on top. From the drawings it appears to be a multi-side-port design similar to the RX-8's engine...but look at that big turbocharger just sitting on top.

Edit: Interestingly, there does not appear to be direct injection associated with this patent application.

Direct Injection has carbon buildup issues that I'm not sure have been corrected yet, maybe Mazda didn't want to take the risk.

Well, confirmed at the CX-9 unveiling, they have turbocharged a SkyActiv engine for the basis of an MPS*cough -3-cough*...

Why can't internet bloggers just title their articles like proper journalists? For God's sake.

"Mazda still developing rotary engine, not ready yet"

Click bait is the death of journalistic credibility and integrity.

We already knew about this engine though, and didn't Mazda kill off the MPS, they said this gen 3 wasn't getting it.

From what I've seen, that engine's character is more similar to a turbo diesel engine than a performance-oriented turbo petrol/gas engine. It sacrifices almost everything for very low rpm response and high torque output. The redline is 6,000rpm and most reviewers claim it's all over at 4500rpm. I really doubt it could be used in an enthusiast application without considerable redesign.

That's what they said.... back then...

As I mentioned in the CX discussion. I wasn't able to attend the CX-9 unveil yesterday but, my workmate did. Trust.
The CX-9 engine was designed for low end torque, true. However, an MPS application is also built.
