McLaren MP/4-29 launch

I'm not fussed. I know it's a throwback to the West livery, but the shape of the car itself makes it look like one of Penske's IndyCars. I'd much rather they tried something new.

Funny you mention that since McLaren and Penske at times mirrored the basic livery that each other had in certain years (through sponsorship or something else) until McLaren went the chroma-flare route thanks to Vodafone. I can see them sticking with this current silver paint with Honda and MAYBE adding a dash of red there again once they get their engines next year.

Edit: Tree'd by McLaren

Since Santander is on the drivers' suits, I wouldn't count out a white and red livery.

The only reason F1 is even getting viewers at the moment is 90% of everyone watching it thinks F1 is the only form of motorsport. It's all down to the mainstream media and their misconceptions, so they get passed on to the general public.

Sky Sports showing La Liga doesn't affect the Premiere League because the mainstream media is football obsessed, so people know what the Premiere League is. If it got absolutely no media attention like other racing series, people wouldn't know it exists and it would therefore have no media appeal. It's a vicious cycle - once you get into it, you need to be brave to pull things out of it.
So why should mainstream media give coverage to something that people don't know exists?

To be honest I'd like to see a touch of light/electric blue in this car if they stick with the silver when they finally pair up with Honda. They can even have Acura badging in the American races. Help them sell more of their hybrids 👍

My understanding is that that is just Santander renewing their partnership, not increasing their involvement. The team is still looking for a title sponsor, after all.

Because it thoroughly deserves it? It's not my fault mainstream media appeals to the lowest common denominators in society. Let's take the football one up again - if the media treated football like they do motorsport, i.e not bothering to do any research on the subject, it is highly likely that anything other than the World Cup would get any interest. Does that mean that anything other than the World Cup has shoddy management and is crap? Of course not.

I'm not going to bother taking this any further because it hasn't got anything to do with the car and misses the whole point of what I was going on about yesterday. If the Ferrari launches with a funny nose, people will start crying like it's the end of the world and I don't think that would happen with any other series.

Good idea, don't want the thread to get locked. To be fair, i'd rather see a finger nose on the Ferrari than a ridiculously curved one.

Truth is it does, it happened in NASCAR with the COT, it's happened with IRL and WEC/LMS had to deal with it plenty back in the early 2000s to mid 2000s when the regulations made cars look horrid. Also most of the people that hate the car are massive race fans and thus not the general population as you have made it sound, those who aren't big on the sport think the cars look cool and different than anything they've seen thus they become instantly interested.

Either way the group you're comparing to the general viewership makes the argument moot.

I agree people should just quit but they are entitled to subjective thought as much as you and thus we all will have to deal with it. So moving on, if you want you can post on my profile to keep this going or one of the current threads talking about this very subject.

Back to the car, and hoping that a cool sponsor comes around soon. I have a feeling the original lined up sponsor either backed out of this (the dec 2? announcement), or a new deal had to be done and is still being worked out. I see no reason to keep the world wondering who the sponsor is because it really doesn't matter to the viewers and is a team interest solely.

I was sure that it was the more general people that were complaining the most, anything that's different is immediately a bad thing, like the engines. It can't be that big of an issue if slightly changing the livery makes the problem almost vanish. I like the fact that the 2 cars shown yesterday had completely different noses and we have some more variety.

I like it too, the McLaren isn't that bad and the Lotus is alright. I'd say they're much better than the Williams. However, it is when you start tossing around how motorsports at large seen by the rest of the world fans, non-fans, casual viewers and then place a generalization as if the majority would complain that's isn't factual. Especially when you see who actually complained, and I could name names but I rather not get into several arguments at once when there are several cars to enjoy in the next few days. Point still stands those fanatics are acting elitist and complaining about some F1 hay day, and not general people, since General people consist of all categories (fans, non-fans, casual).

Also what people need to remember is these cars aren't static, Jonathan Neale put it best and by claiming this car will probably have the most development out of any McLaren F1 car. This will obviously affect the nose at some point and the front wing.

I have heard that next Season the McLaren will have the the Sony(as main sponsor)/Honda(engine) partnership and will go back to Red and White.

And this one looks even better, amazing what a little paint can do:

Oh right, why have the drivers overall's got them then (pic on the first page)? Surely they would have plastered Santander all over it by now.

Santander isn't their title sponsor.

Santander haven't appeared on their car for a few years, just on the overalls. However Jenson appears in a lot of weird adverts for them.

That might look good, but they will not use it even if they wanted to. The red and white chevron is a Marlboro trademark, and effectively synonymous with the brand. In 2012, Craig Lowndes raced with a Peter Brock tribute livery at Bathurst, but because Brock raced in Marlboro colours, they changed the design to be a red triangle pointing forwards, which attracted a lot of controversy.

And even if McLaren did decide to use said livery, they would have to cover the car with pictures of cancers in Australia because of our plain-packaging laws.

Since Ron Dennis is coming back this would be an appropriate livery too. The field would look great with this car in it and it really embodies the McLaren ethos. Plus the team can go back to wearing leather jackets and black t-shirts instead of the disgusting uniform they've had for a couple of years now.

Someone needs to send that to Ron Dennis. That makes the car look so much better!

The F1 sub-reddit is a great source of new info. I usually sift through it from time to time when content here gets thin and post up anything I find interesting back up here if anyone wanted to know where I'm getting these awesome pics from :D
Is it real or fake? I hope real.
