20 min was really long for the stock race and when I did 20 laps for the tuned race it took around 10 min for the race and the racing was very close
I think your math is a little bit off. The tuned cars were only 4 seconds quicker than the stock ones. 54 seconds vs 58 seconds. The length of the race only varied by about a minute and a half, not 10 minutes.
So we were looking at something like ~56 sec/lap (field average) x 20 laps = 1120 seconds = 18 min 40 sec. And that was about a perfect race length. So just go about 20 mins each race and we'll be good.
As for the reason the racing was closer in the tuned race, well that's quite simple. The tuned cars are easier to drive because you can tune some of the crappy handling out of it, and the accelerate quicker, which makes it less of a momentum car, and makes spinning out a bit less deadly because you don't have to wait for the car to wind up through the long 1st gear. The tuned car is a lot more user friendly than the stock car.
