One of the largest UFOs ever seen has been observed by the crew and passengers of an airliner over the Channel Islands.

An official air-miss report on the incident several weeks ago appears in Pilot magazine.

Aurigny Airlines captain Ray Bowyer, 50, flying close to Alderney first spotted the object, described as "a cigar-shaped brilliant white light".

As the plane got closer the captain viewed it through binoculars and said: "It was a very sharp, thin yellow object with a green area.

"It was 2,000ft up and stationary. I thought it was about 10 miles away, although I later realised it was approximately 40 miles from us. At first, I thought it was the size of a [Boeing] 737.

"But it must have been much bigger because of how far away it was. It could have been as much as a mile wide."

Continuing his approach to Guernsey, Bowyer then spied a "second identical object further to the west".

He said: "It was exactly the same but looked smaller because it was further away. It was closer to Guernsey. I can't explain it. This was clearly visual for about nine minutes.

"I'm certainly not saying that it was something of another world. All I'm saying is that I have never seen anything like it before in all my years of flying."

The sightings were confirmed by passengers Kate and John Russell. John, 74, said: "I saw an orange light. It was like an elongated oval."

The sightings were also confirmed by an unnamed pilot with the Blue Islands airline.

The Civil Aviation Authority safety notice states that a Tri-Lander aircraft flying close to Alderney spotted the object.

"Certain parts of the report have not been published. I cannot say why," said a senior CAA source.

Earlier this year, however, the MOD declared its intentions to open its UFO files to the public.

The pilot was also interviewed half an hour ago on Richard and Judy on Channel 4, and mentioned even radar picked up some "traces" of an object being in the sky at the time.

Pretty interesting, considering the amount and type of people who saw it...

Yeah this one is interesting, the sheer number of people who all saw the same thing at the same time makes it pretty undeniable that something was there. What that something was though is wide open to debate.

I'm really curious about what these people saw, because even if it isn't an alien spaceship it may be some cool illusion created by natural forces.

However, I think this will be like the UFOs videotaped over Mexico City; Paris Hilton will get out of jail soon and the media will forget that there was, at best, a visitor from another planet. Why do I get follow up stories to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears but never, ever a follow up to something like this

thats pretty interesting. I'm not saying there are extra terrestrials but i always said that it can't just be us in the universe :)

Heres something for everybody to think about? If they are out there and they see us in our (planes, jets, copters, and shuttles) what do they call them. USFO S=slow

i wouldnt ask that. depending on how much "they" know about us.

I would rather ask, if those are real UFO's from other civilizations, how come they never make contact with earth or us humans. - unless those UFO's are unmaned ships.

I don't believe in UFO's or aliens until i see one my self. I just say there is a possibility of other life froms :)

Or how would 'Aliens' survive in our atmosphere, given that they would almost certainly survive on a planet which had an atmosphere different to ours.

I personally don't believe in UFOs or Aliens, other lifeforms? Most probably the universe is a fairly large place.

Other lifeforms would be aliens, however advanced or unadvanced compared to us, a lifeform not from here would be Alien.

If it was a giant elongated oval, what's not to say it was just some weather balloon?

Maybe we're just looking into a mirror?

June just happens to be the 60th anniversary of the Roswell incident.

Spooky.

I hate it when people who see UFOs at night describe their size. A mile wide? Exactly what, in the inky, featureless blackness that is the night sky could have possibly given him an accurate reference? It could have been a mile wide and ten miles away. It could also have been 50 feet long and 400 feet away. How exactly could he know? He obviously wasn't even sure himslef.

It was probably swap gas, anyway.

Ok think about this for a moment. Suppose you were a being of ,apparently, higher intellect, have mastered how to travel at the speed of light or similar and probably have made technological advancements that would amaze the human race. Now imagine your flying around the galaxy in your little ship and you come across earth, a once beautifull planet with a rapidly evolving race of beings on it all hell bent on extracting all sources of energy and generally destroying where they live. A race which over the course of its history war has been waged many times and there are still wars going on today............ would you stop to say hello?

I think if it was an alien vessel then they are doing the right thing by observing and not contacting us. I certainly wouldnt stop for a cup of tea especially when you think about what would probably happen if an alien suddenly decided to take a stoll around the high street, mass hysteria would be an understatement. Armys would probably get involved etc and what a pleasnt way to greet a new form of life..... the public throw stones and run screaming and the army put guns in there faces and try to capture them. :indiff:

Spec....

Heh. If aliens flying our skies are real, why have their ships evolved has human interpretation of alien ships evolved?

Think about it.

I get your point spec. But frankly said, if an alien would land on earth, i highly doubt that any of us humans would attack that spacecraft/alien.

I don't want pull that statement of the pilot down, neither do i want to rise it up but since not only the pilot saw it, so did passengers and others see/reported a sightning.

OFF TOPIC:// One thing that always keeped me wondering about that Rosswell incident '47 is, how come that since that time OUR aircrafts/jets have improved so much. We have jets reaching 3+ Mach.

- and another thing that bothers me is, why would the US make such a huge story about something which wouldnt have happened?!?!

I know, I just meant the typical 'Alien', ie, Green, 2 legs, 2 arms, etc.

The first flight of a powered, manned aircraft (arguments aside) took place in 1903 at a speed of 6.8mph. 43 years later, before Roswell "happened", the Bell X-1, which subsequently broke the sound barrier and pushed on up to Mach 2.2, had its maiden flight.

So in 43 years, without alien-derived advancement, speed of flight had increase from 6.8mph to Mach 1 - a 113-fold improvement. Since then, despite alien-derived advancement, speed of flight has improved only 3-fold (SR-71A Blackbird - Mach 3.3 or greater) or 10-fold if you believe in Aurora. In 60 years.

Rate of advancement in speed has slowed since Roswell's supposed occurrence, as every boundary we push has another boundary closer by than before.

Wow, you make it sound as of the natural evolution of civilization as they slowly depart from their animal ancestor, warring tribal ways is a bad thing. Hell yes I would stop and say hello, especially if they have managed spaceflight. My visit would make their wars suddenly seem much less important because they are no longer these lonely creatures fighting for whatever, they are now a single unit among many different intelligent species units.

Honestly, aside from the religious extremists and racists (turned speciesists) the idea of fighting amongst ourselves would seem pointless. Only those who would be offended by the presence of other intelligence would continue their violence. It would set humans on a path of, I would guess, 20-50 years of debate and acceptance to move past our own petty bickerings.

I think that we would be too curious. The general population of western civilization is not some hate mongering radicals that would want them dead on sight. I do believe some military presence would show up, but it would be doing double duty in making sure no civilians did anything uncalled for, and to make sure these are peacful beings.

The last thing we want is to find out we are galactic Native Americans and they are galactic Europeans come to conquer. But we would want to make sure they aren't here to establish communications before we did anything hostile.

Famine beat me to this one. But like he said, technology was advancing extremely fast before Roswell.

You mean Roswell? Well, before the Air Force could report on its findings it was a national story that an alien ship had crash landed, and the drama of the situation was not helped by the fact that science fiction movies were at their peak. I'm not saying it wasn't an alien ship, but I can easily see how it turned into what it has become if it wasn't. The same thing that always makes stuff get blown out of proprtion - media.

I think that you have understated our history of flight. No one cared about trying to go faster after we got to space. Chuck Yeager was forgotten in the desert while men were riding missiles into space.

I think things truly stagnated with the shuttle. That was when it became more about doing research and less about exploration. Looking at this I think that if we had some form of alien spacecraft we would have built new technology by now instead of letting ours get old and causing two missions to be destroyed by equipment failures.

You haven't seen my Penis

I'd love a follow up on this story too - but apart from finding this story on here i havent seen or heard anything in the news about this.

I am very undecided about my opinions on UFO's and Aliens, I'd like to believe there is something else out there.

When we think about aliens we always have perceptions of engineering much different from ours with "super capabilities" and built of different elements. And a little green guy flying it with laser guns and big black eyes.

But one thing i've always thought about is - if earth is not the only planet in the universe with life on it - maybe we (humans) are the ones that will discover (maybe not now and maybe not for thousands of years) other life-forms. Not others discover us. At this moment in time, maybe we are the most intelligent life form in the universe with the most advanced technology. Who knows??

Even although there has been thousands of supposed UFO sightings - maybe they are true and yet maybe they arent. I have no right to judge others opinions on what they claim to have seen. I still like to think that everything has a beginning and maybe thats us.

Well, it would have had to be interstellar, which means they have crazy long lifespans or they can travel faster than light.

What I don't get is if aliens are real, and probably a whole lot more sophisticated, why are their ships always horrible shapes? Cigars, saucers, seems a bit boring and bulkish for advanced beings.

Maybe that's whats required for intersteller travel. You can't really judge alien design practice by our earthly (human) ideals.

Perhaps they just dig old skool?

same boat. I would like to believe that we arent the only life form in the universe and maybe you are right and we are the most advanced life form in the whole universe (which i somehow just cant believe)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universe it says if the earth is the center of the universe (which i doubt aswell) the universe is approx. 46.5 billion lightyears visible in every direction from the earth.

I still believe that the universe is INFINITE. i mean come on, there are so many galaxies with millions of planets in them that there has to be another life form :)
