Yeah, i've started to play around with coasting through corners instead of accelerating at the apex, as the SLR pushes terribly under acceleration (shouldn't a car like this oversteer? Good job, PD). This does seem to be quicker, but I haven't completed any laps doing this, so I'm sure how much time it's worth yet. I brake in straight lines at all costs, but sometimes I go in way too deep, and start to lose time. Maybe once school is over next week, I'll sit down for a few hours and beat this sucker :)

OKay first thing. the car understeer because of sports tire medium and it's heavy. But I made it oversteer Just enough coming into some fast corner by steering completly in the direction I want to go and tap the brake. And Yes you probably won't do it on the first try , you'll need to warm up and remember some things that you might have forget. Even If your run sucks, Finish it. Because you won't know then end of the track as well as you know the beginning and you'll lose plenty of time in the last sections. Hope that helps :)

Just done this again for the third time. This was my fastest time by far, a 9'11.601 (PAL version). I believe this time is fast enough to beat the harder NTSC version.

I think the keys to this mission are carrying exit speed on to the two long straights (i.e. the long run up towards the Karussel and the back straight) and braking. You must brake sooner than you think, as this is a heavy car and you'll probably be carrying a lot of speed.

My lap wasn't perfect, I got held up behind a couple of the AI cars and made slight contact with the SL500 as I passed it (though it wasn't beneficial contact). I also made a couple of slight errors during the lap, but I'm pleased with it nonetheless

My splits:

Start: 1'55.000

1'42.865
1'34.546
1'26.945
1'14.147
1'01.591
50.429
35.355
27.522
20.540
9.097

M.O.V. 5.789 seconds

Laptime: 9'11.601 - 1'55.000 = 7'16.601

(This looks like contact, but I don't think it was)
(Blocked by the AI)
(I made slight contact just after this was taken. He turned in on me, honest :) )
(An easy pass)
(Gave the SLK a fright on the straight)
(Not a safe place to pass  )

I think I could probably improve the lap by about 2 seconds, maybe 3 with a bit of luck.

Good luck to everyone trying to pass this one 👍

That's not enough to beat it in ntsc version. you'll need a M.O.V. of at least 8 seconds and maybe more because the places where you pass are easier IMO.
1st pass
ntsc : Karussel :yuck:
pal: straight
2nd pass
ntsc:tough pass
pal: easy pass on straight
3rd pass
ntsc:before the long straight wich slows you down for the straight :yuck:
pal: straight, easy pass.
4th pass
ntsc: straight
pal: straight
5th pass
Ntsc: last straight
pal: straight.

youre faster than me there. i had only just passed the SL by here:

sorry about the crap shot, i'll take some better ones when i can be fussed

i passed the cars here:

this was just before the bridge on the back straight

then the finale

Without the small mistakes I reckon I could just about make the gap up to 8 seconds.

Plus, if I was up to the MOV of 8 seconds you say I'd need then my passes would have been more difficult than they were in the above run, so they wouldn't really be easier than NTSC

A video of my run:

Download (24MB)

The quality is pretty poor (trying to keep the filesize low) and it's hosted on yousendit (been using a fair bit of bandwidth on my ISP space, so I'd like to keep the load off)

Oops, should have checked it before I posted the link :dunce:

Well, there's no point uploading it again just to have it break, so I'll stick it on my ISP's web space. Since bandwidth is limited I can only let 5 people a day download it. Anyone who wants the video, PM me and I'll send the link.

i dont understand, i try this all the time and i cant seem to even come in 5th? Maybe i just suck. newbs always suck. Is there a way somebody can help me? how do manage to catch up to the guy in 5th before the long straightway?

I was really more agressive in the first part
+1'48.2xx vs 1'42.xxx (2 seconds faster)
+1'39.8xx vs 1'34.546 (3 secs faster)
+1'30.2xx vs 1'26.945(4 secs faster)
+1'19.2xx vs 1'14.147(5secs faster)
:)

Take a look at daan's video. It might give you a few tips

Haha! I think I'll stay away from going into a corner sideways. :) If I give this mission a serious go again, I should be able to get the 3 seconds I need without resorting to rally techniques.

Unfortunately, that still won't be enough.

Like I said before... the margin is 11 seconds, not 8.

You need to get < 9'13 after starting 2'03 back.
That's a 7'10 laptime (in traffic of course)

And to make matters worse, the 300SL doesn't consistently come in at 9'13. It varies about 1/2 sec either way.

yeah, on pal you need to be in the mid 9'04 area to be on-par with the ntsc game.

and i'd like to point out another thing, people are too hard on the SLR, its actually quite good.
it understeers because of the ASM, thats the only reason.
turn that junk off and the car is beautiful.

If you do a sub 9:04 run in PAL the places to pass the AI cars are quite different from what they are if you do a 9:11 or 9:15 run. I've passed the AI cars on the following places:

The 1st car just before or just after Bergwerk. This is probably the second hardest of the five passes. I've passed twice the 1st AI from the right side before Bergwerk curve when braking to the curve. It caused problems because I had the inner line and the exit speed wasn't too good. Passing the car just right after exiting the apex needs a little different driving line than you would normally do: before the curve you have to go quite far to the left and then quickly turn to the inside to get to the right side pass.

The 2nd AI car when existing Karussell or on the right bends on the following straight. This isn't as bad as the 1st one because you can get a good time if you pass the car early enough on the bends so that you can get back to normal drving line before Hohe Acht. I screwed Karussell and lost a few tenths there and could pass it in the second right bend.

The 3rd AI car at Pflanzgarten II in a curvy section before the downhill towards Schwalbenschwanz. This is definately the most difficult car to pass in PAL version because the track is very narrow and curvy. The AI car also goes from left to the right and avoiding to touch it causes problems. I passed it from the right side in a left turn. Obviously there was room to overtake him on the left side, but I took the right lane because I thought there would've been more problems in the downhill if I had used the left side.

The 4th and 5th AI cars are easy passes on the long straight at Döttinger-Höhe and before Antoniusbuche.

I think the biggest difference between NTSC and PAL are in the end of the lap. In NTSC you have to pass the last AI car very close to the finish line. If you try to win the mission for the first time it naturally gives more pressure when knowing that you are able to screw it in the last curve. Well that's the way is in PAL too (no, I'm not that stupid). I mean that if you do a 9:03 - 9:04 run in PAL you have passed all AI cars long before the finish line.

Anyway also in PAL you can't do bad mistakes and you have to keep up the good speed to the end to get a 9:03.

If only we could turn this crap off for the missions... It would still be a useless car. You can get a comparable car for 1/6 the cost.

Like everyone else, I hate the Waiting.
However, to combat the boredom of waiting, I switch my TV to PIP, leaving a small window for GT4, and the larger for watching the ballgame or porn, then, exchanging the windows as my countdown gets to say 10 seconds. Helps a lot.

I finally beat this horrifically difficult mission. I had to resort to cheating by wallriding at Bergwerk, Karussell, and Galgenkopf, as well as trimming the lawn at Adenauer-Forst, but that's what PD deserves for making this mission way too hard on the NTSC version. I hate the ugly body of the R89C, and have no use for the black F1 car (though it is gorgeous). I would also gladly give back the 50,000 credits. I'm just relieved to finally get this mission out of the way, and to achieve 100.0%. Maybe I'll go back to GT3 and beat those two time trials I never finished. :)

Dr_Watson
actually its worse than that.
the PAL version is not only 8 seconds less wait... the Gullwing is slower, only need a 9'16 vs our 9'12
so in actuality, the NTSC test is 12 seconds harder.

closest i've gotten is a 9'13.198
yeah... heartbreaker... lost by +0.16xxx

its by no means impossible though... I had several mistakes that lap, i figure 9'10 is easily attainable.... but ahhh... the waiting. >:E

oh, and tip-wise... i've noticed something about the SLR's handeling.
It really likes to have the throttle on. (probably because of the high degree of ASM) Lifting off and coasting the corners like was said earlier, eats speed.
Its alot better to use 1/2 throttle. you'll keep a consistant speed, then after apex, ease back into full throttle... the car is much more stable that way, and has much higher corner speeds.

tip#2: in most situations the curbs are NOT your friend.
the ones in T1 are quite friendly, but everything after the anneberg (sp?) forest section its a good idea to keep 4 wheels on the pavement.

-> oh, and lawn mowing / rollercoastering is a pretty weak way to win this one.
I have been struggling w/ this mission for 2 weeks. I can run 3-4 seconds behind leader, had a 1/2 second finish (one of the few times I've seen the 300SL besides at the start), and figured out I have to be totally relaxed w/ no interruptions or thoughts on my mind. Time is valuable so I have been cramming the mission in whenever I could (too stressed-not good) I am going to try choosing a time when I am relaxed & have the time before I attempt again.

Mission 34 is definitely one of the more humbling endeavors in the Gran Turismo series. After a while, I started referring to it as "Mission Impossible." I just kept going at it a few hours a day for four days straight until I got it. I did use some "lawn-mowing," but tried to keep it within reason (no intentional wall-riding, no handbrake-into-T13-barrier). If I could just do lap after lap without waiting, I might have had the patience to run it two-wheels-on-track. Some day I may try it (because it is very possible) but not for a very long time.

Most of the good tips have already been posted. Getting down to under 5-8 seconds is really just practice. After that, it becomes a bit harder to chew down time and I had to start analyzing and adjusting my lines a bit. Once you are under 2-3 seconds, it's just a matter of time before you hit the perfect lap. ;)

Focus on the turns leading into long straightaways, of course. The faster you come out of those, the better. When you get down to under 5 seconds, try to work out safe passing points for each AI car. Practice the Schikane because you don't want to hit a 14-second split at the bridge and then lose it at the very end. And learn the art of "the save": you're never going to hit every line perfectly, but if you can avoid the big mistake, you can still salvage the lap. (Watch my near-spin after Miss-Hit-Miss to see what I mean.)

Hope that helps! :)

Lots of people are going to hate me for this, but I passed mission 34 on the second attempt!

A lot of people might have if they had the PAL version. I'm not sure why Polyphony put so much discrepancy between versions.

I still hate you. I was no where near 8 seconds back on my first two attempts. (Although some people say it's more like 12 seconds because the Gullwing is slower.) Still, I think my first two completed attempts were in the 20 second range. Good job! :)

I took ages to complete the mission, in fact, I just completed it 15 minutes ago. I took duzens of tries just today. I started playing at aound 12PM and did it at 4:50PM. God it was hard. And I only really finished a hand full of the races. Most of them I stopped during the lap.
Finally got 100%.
And to Raify, who did it in his second try. I don't know u, but I hate u soo much.

NTSC U/C version... 50-billionth attempt... 0.433 seconds behind the Gullwing with one 5-second penalty botching my pass on the SLK... if i had a puppy, i'd have kicked it... :ouch:
