alright. there seems to be some kind of misunderstanding here. so let me clarify. I have to cut through the grass and wallride on this mission because I would never get through this mission otherwise. i'm just trying to get as much help as possible. the videos are nice, but they won't be there with me when i play this challenge this afternoon. i apologize if i made it seem as though i'm putting off the impression that if i can't do this, noone can. but the truth is, if i can't do this, it'll never get done. especially as hard as the Mercedes Showdown is.

I used to think the very same thing, yet if an old fart like me can do it any one of you whipper snappers can :sly:
It took me nearly a week to do it but I did it without using any cheats, short cuts, etc.

Cheating only gets you so far on this test. I might not be the most "creative" cheater out there but if you aren't coming within 6 seconds of succeeding when running clean, it's not going to be easy to win even with cheating.

Using the correct line, even when cheating, is essential through every other corner not cut or grass not mown. The advice of Slow in + Fast out is nearly perfect for this situation. The SLR has excellent acceleration compared to lateral grip, so slowing down slightly too much is better than entering the turn too fast, lifting off, and finding out that your exit speed is 10 mph lower than it should be.

Other than this, make sure that you utilize the dark grooves / lower areas on the track (e.g. make sure you are on the far left side of the hill before Flugplatz) and this helps improve your times.

^^^^^ Yes, so many areas of this track cannot use the "ideal" racing line because the road is so severley crowned. The license tests go into this in several places. A lot of times entering the turn wide is bad, because the camber is so wrong you can't turn in. You'll actually have to start the turn from just inside the centerline.

Finding the locations where this is required is left as an exercise for the reader. :D

And as stated repeatedly by myself and many others, you CANNOT go faster here (or anyplace else, for that matter) by "carrying speed into the turn." You MUST slow down in time to make the turn and accelerate out. When your exit speed is higher by 10 or 15 miles per hour, that's speed you carry all the way to the next braking point, and it adds up.

Just don't carry it past the next braking point!!!

Again, trying to go fast by taking a turn too fast results in slowing down at the exit just to make the turn, and and slowing down at the exit rather than the entrance means you have less speed all the way through to the next turn. It adds up (or subtracts down) fast.

I think the key to win this challenge (PAL or NTSC) is the following things. Any of the following when used in combination will be a good advantage:

- use steering wheel such as Driving Force Pro
- cut corners where possible (mainly possible in the first quarter of turns on the Nordschleife, basically just 2 wheels on the grass, I don't mean leaving the track completely)
- slow in, fast out, always use the whole track on corner exit on the Nordschleife

well, i'm coming within 0'00.464 of winning. do you think i have a chance at winning?💡

I must admit that I cheated this one :( I can't stand those damn 123 seconds or so at the beginning! I really can't! I am a very impatient guy, and to lose the mission and then go over that damn wait again is just not worth it, in my opinion. But I swear I will complete it cleanly once. Even though I already have the prize, what I have to get back is my pride.

It is completely possible to win this race in a clean way, as many, many have pointed out before. I just can't stand the wait, but after driving in N2 tires for five days straight, the tires on the Mercedes really seem like a whole new world to me.

That's the thing why I didn't succeed the first time I tried that mission.. But the second time I tried I said to myself "Come on, you'll beat it now, don't worry".. And also I didn't look onto the countdown, as it always makes me :yuck:.. So, don't worry, Lucas, once you know how to beat it, you'll always beat it (cleanly of course :sly:) ;)

But you are from PAL land ;) Things are much easier for you than they are to us NTSC users. I could easily beat the mission too if I was a PAL player.

Funny thing is, when I checked in a guide for the PAL version it claimed the handicap was 123 seconds as well.

;)

PAL: 115 second wait, Lead car finishes at ~9'16 (+/- .5 sec)
NTSC: 123 second wait, Lead car finishes at ~ 9'13 (+/- .5 sec)

Recently, i deleted my entire GT4 data, and restarted the whole thing. The previous game was almost 90% completed. I recall not finishing the 3 lap NY battle, the Seattle Circuit Battle, and just a bunch of other 1 make races.

I recall not finishing the 1000 miles too. However, most of my missions are completed now. STill struggling for the Honda S2000 Gt1 slipstream battle.

Today so far, i fin the 1 lap showdown of Suzuka, and Tsukuba. Tried this mission 34 and failed twice. First one was almost 12 secs off pace, while the second time, i was 10 secs off pace, but, I incurred 2 5 sec penalty for hitting the 5th car twice.

On the previous game i finished this mission quite easily after a few practices. But the car really really understeers. Not bothered much about the handling, but the understeering is really affecting the overall aggresion and speed.

This is strange, but this to me was the one of the easiest 1 lap magic missions. I beat it on my third go, and although I am from PALland, I set a 9:10 lap. I now have the shiny shiny Nissan as a result of passing this DM!

Yeah, I passed it very easily by the second try.. Very strange..

I've Finally Won Mission34!!!

After working on this Mission for two weeks, I finally beat the Mercedes to the finish line. I started on May 2nd, and my first loss was by 45 seconds, so I knew I was in for a battle. I bought a McLaren and ran many practice laps at the Nurburgring (my best was 7.03.3). I then watched a number of the videos above. Over the next ten days (about an hour a day), I was able to knock about a second a try off my losing margins (I ran 24 good laps that I recorded, and I would say that I reset the console about 100 times).

Then about an hour ago, I ran very decent lap and lost by 1.1 seconds. This was extremely encouraging. On my next three tries, I lost by 1.5 seconds, 3.3 seconds, and 1.9 seconds, so I knew I was close. And then after a reset (I blew the jump/right turn just before the Adenaur Forest), I ran my Magic Lap!. My winning time was 9.12.6, with a MOV of 0.51

Beating this Mission has put me on such a high, that going to sleep seems out of the question. Especially, since winning this Mission has also put me at 100% for the game!!!. I will try to take a picture tomorrow and post in the 100% thread.

Thanks to everyone that posted their suggestions above. I used them all. For me, lots of practice was necessary to post a good time. Also, working over and over again on the first half of the lap was important because I knew that I had to get to the Karussel before the fifth place car if I ever stood a chance of winning.

Congratulations Gtsail! 👍
Beating this mission, especially the NTSC-version, is quite an achievement.

One question though, why did you reset the console? You can just restart the race right away..

Thanks for the acknowledgement Alhajoth. This Mission is hard because its so long and you have to run a nearly perfect lap. Thank goodness that you don't have to run a perfect lap though, because then I think it would have been impossible for me. Passing this Mission was great! I am still on such a high this evening even after 24 hours.

You are correct, I was just resetting the Mission, not resetting the game console. Since the resets mean watching the 123 seconds run down again, each one is pretty painful.

i'm still struggling to complete this mission. Just this and the NY Toyota Mission.

The previous profile, i got thsi mission done pretty easily. But now, i'm really struggling. I tried and failed 3 time now. Best time a 9:19:166. Thats about 10 secs off the lead car.

There are two things that I have to keep in mind when driving this:
The first is to not be flustered by that countdown and the margins that pop up.
The second is to not push too hard - just drive smoothly and well, and you catch up. It's tough, but definitely doable - stick at it Remy!

Thanks mate. I'm not switching off the PS until i get this done. I'm actually writing this as i'm waiting for the countdown. 90 secs left!

9:18:142

4 sec off after going off the track twice. I'm gonna try it again, the final time fo rtoday.

If you need tips for the Toyota, I'll post them in that thread for you.👍

Thanks mate. Appreciate it. But i need to solve this 34 first. I managed to shave a sec off my lap time. 9'18'142. Went off teh road once, and had 5 sec penalty at the Karussell when trying to overtake the 5th place.

It sounds like you are getting close to winning this mission. Keep trying and you should get the job done.

Have you compared your split times to the various winning split times posted above? This might point out a portion of the 'Ring where you need more practice.

Almost anything that I could say about this Mission would just repeat suggestions that others have previously posted to this thread. However, one thing that I learned after many laps is that it is important to nail Hocheichen. This turn, coming before a fast downhill (as it does), really helps your times when you nail it. And of course, the way to drive it is slow in and fast out!

Good luck

Thanks mate. 👍

I managed a 9'16 lap earlier, and i did compare the overtaking points. In that 9'16 run, everything was perfect, right till just before the 2nd Karusell, the hilly and bumpy area. I totally lost it there, did two 360s, and lost the mission.

I managed to recover and still finish just 4+ secs behind the winning SL.

I'm really struggling at this part of the circuit. While waiting for countdowns, i'll be reading this whole thread here and there for pointers, as well as looking thru youtube for footages. I get everything perfect, like overtaking the 5th place at or just before the 1st Karusell.

It's that hilly bumpy section before the 2nd Karusell i tend to overdrive the car and just lose it.
