The best advice I got for this mission was to just take it easy. You don't have to be on the limit. Reasonably fast and braking that tiny bit earlier when needed will be enough to get you that win.

You say you struggle around the 2nd carousel, the time lost in you taking it easy through there would definitely make up for the time lost in driving that little bit faster and losing control.

I'm almost there guys. Finished 0.6 sec off the winning SL. 9'14 laptime.

i drove the wheels off the SLR. I fishtailed and had the rear wheels on the grass half of the corners. I just made a slight mistake before the pit entrance and went a bit wide tho.

Guys, ive actually given up on this - for the time being.

I've tried almost everything. Drive aggresively, drive gently, etc. But at the moment, nothing seems to work. Whats really annoying is when u screw up, u gotta wait 2 bloody mins for the restart.

Now, i've read suggestions on this thread to take the SLR for the 24 hour Enduro. I've gotten myself default tyres (RD Version), and that seems to handle very similarly to the one on the mission.

On the mission, it states that the SLR runs on Sports medium tyres, but i highly doubt.

Now i need any settings i can get to run the car for the 24 hour race before having a go for this mission again. ANy tips? Thanks.

I feel for you Remy I really do. I used to think like yourself many MANY times. 5 years ago after months of on and off trying I managed to beat this mission in PAL version when I lived in New Zealand. I moved back to the states, purchased an NTSC version and once again struggled for a while.

I suggest don't burn yourself out trying. Just go back every so often and have a few goes at it. The wait itself sucks and honestly I don't understand why Poly did it that way but they did.

Keep in mind if an old fart like me can do it any of you younger snappers can :)

I appreciate your advice mate. But i think, i rushed into this too fast. Prior to this, i was just playing F1 2006, and bunch of other PS2 games. Then one day, i deleted my old data, started all over, completed most of the missions, just this and the Toyota mission left in fact.

Right now, i'm in the middle of the 4 hour enduro @ the 'Ring. No biggie, but i will try this mission again soon. Thanks again for the advices everybody :)

Keep at it Remy Zero, you'll eventually get it, and it is worth the effort. Running the 4 hour enduro at the 'Ring is worth it, plus you get some money (its one of the things that I did to gain practice at the 'Ring). I eventually found that just taking the Mercedes to the 'Ring in the Practice mode was better (because in the 4 hour enduro, your out-lap is slow during tire warmup and your fourth lap is slow since the tires go away).

I concur with J-Pap.

If you are still having problems with the latter part of the course, a light tap of the brakes or even some coasting to settle the car is ok thru these fast bumps and esses.

There is a natural tendency to want to keep the gas peddle floored thru this area, but I think it saves time to get the car settled first.

If you watch the Mission 34 video's you will see that others have also tapped the brakes or at least come off full throttle.

Hmm, I realized lately how great Gran Turismo 4 was and have stopped playing Forza 2 to play this again before GT5 comes out.
After loading up my old save file I noticed I never attempted any of the last missions.
Going to try and beat this today. Looks really tough, but I think it's doable after having driven the Ring so much in Forza 2. At least I sure hope so lol.

Track knowledge helps. A lot. But that's it. Whole different game...

Yeah I realize that =]
I've been a GT junkie since GT1. It's taking me a bit to get reacquainted with GT4's driving physics as opposed to Forza 2/GT5:P, though.
One thing I'll never miss from Forza is the crappy wheel xbox has.
Logitech has always been so great compared to that.
The only reason I even play FM2 is the online/customization abilities to be honest.
I've gotten really close to beating this mission and I hope to have it beat today because I really love the ring and the SLR is a pretty impressive car. Very balanced for a heavy weight rwd and all that power.

Update: I've had to turn on active steering because otherwise the car is just too much for me as of now.

Okay, I finally passed the 5th car before the finish line, haha. I'm cutting off a few seconds each lap, but I can tell I have my work cut out for me here. This car is so finicky at times. Seems to oversteer just enough around some corners then push like a pig through others. Guess I'll have to trail brake more perhaps.

Glad to hear that someone else is still working on Mission 34.

This is one HARD Mission.

If you check my post above you will see that on my first recorded run I was down by 45 seconds! And it took quite a while before I did better than third place at the finish line. Thank goodness the track is such a joy to drive, because the wait at the start is such a chore:yuck:.

Practice will get you there.

Good Luck

Thanks I'll definitely need the luck lol.
I'm pretty sure I know what I'm doing wrong as my splits show that I should be catching up to them by the first carousel. Through the real twisty parts I think I'm man handling the car too much and just being real heavy on the brakes when I need to not slow quite as much and let off the brakes to let the car get through the corners. It's just that sometimes the car decides to go all crazy on me and it flies off the track, etc.
Hence I'm being a nervous nanny on some of the sections :nervous:

Also, is it possible to change my user name? I made this name 5 years ago apparently lol...

FINALLY I DID IT!!

Been trying this seriously off and on for the past week or so. My best run up until today saw me finish 1.206 seconds back from the 300SL (NTSC version). I had the first half of the lap down pretty good but would always screw up on the second half of the lap, either from me overdriving the corners or just catching the AI at the absolute worst times and not being able to make a clean pass. My first attempt today saw me 17.5xx seconds back at the checkpoint on the long straight, within striking distance but not close enough to pass. On the second attempt I had the AMG in sights going into that first concrete banked turn but didn't get slowed down enough to take the turn properly. Instead of maki, and in an attempt to pass him on the inside I clipped the inside barrier and received a 5 second penalty. This didn't slow me down a whole lot though as I had to slow for the next corner anyway, so I was still able to pass him at the end of the carousel. I drove the best I ever drove through the ensuing section and was only 16.350 seconds back at the checkpoint on the long straight. I might have been able to win it that time but caught the SLK right as the chicanes were beginning, forcing me to go off course and inevitably crash and burn. On my third attempt, my mom barged into the room right as I was about to take that fast left just before the top of the hill, resulting in me crashing and having to start over.

But the fourth attempt........ woohoo! Everything was pretty smooth sailing until that left before the jump again. I stayed on the brakes too long and understeered right off course and into the wall. Luckily I didn't hit it hard enough to warrant a penalty, but the off screwed up my entrance to the next turn and subsequently the turn after that. I ended up cutting through the grass at the chicane to regain some of the lost time. Everything was pretty solid after that. I caught the AMG at the first concrete banked left again. This time I was careful not to overdrive the corner, and I was able to make the pass on the exit of the corner. I got through the carousel pretty good and the subsequent slight right after that, but I went into the left curve too hot and ended up sliding off and bumping the inside wall ever so slightly. At that point I thought my chance to win was over, but I kept pushing. When I closed in on the next car on the last left before the turn after the dip, I knew I had the chance. It was the first time I was able to pass him before getting to the dip. I was 14.5 seconds back at the checkpoint on the long straight, almost 2 seconds closer than any of my previous attempts. As I blasted down the straight reaching a top speed of nearly 190mph, I felt the tension building as I knew that one small mistake in the last section would kill the whole lap. I was especially nervous since I didn't have a whole lot of practice in this section and didn't know how aggressive I needed to be. I passed the 230 to the outside right after the kink then headed for the S curves. I didn't get slowed down enough to make the right before the last two turns and ended up going through the grass. I felt like I had lost my chance because of that but kept my foot matted to the floor anyway, just hoping for a miracle. I was about 8 car lengths back as the 300SL rounded the last turn. I knew I wasn't going to make it taking the turn the conventional way, so I let off briefly then matted it, taking full advantage of all the space available outside the track. We crept towards the finish line, him staying calmly on the track and me tearing through the grass like a wildman. I didn't think I was gonna make it, but I was just hoping........ hoping. As I crossed the finish line, I couldn't believe my eyes. -0.007!! I won by 0.007!! Finally its over!

Split times:

Sector 1: +1'50.024
Sector 2: +1'40.886
Sector 3: +1'32.537
Sector 4: +1'19.653
Sector 5: +1'07.265
Sector 6: +56.131
Sector 7: +40.543
Sector 8: +32.209
Sector 9: +26.266
Sector 10: +14.585
Sector 11: +6.133
Finish: -0.007

And if it helps any, every attempt before today I would do something during the 123 second wait. Today I just sat there in front of the TV collecting my thoughts and thinking about the areas of the track I needed to tidy up as I waited for the countdown. As a result I was able to put together good runs during all of my attempts today.

Hey, guess who was the crazy person to do the mission in MANUAL shift? By the way FuryX21 congrads to ya. It was well diserved. 👍👍

But I am the one who did the mission in manual shift. I didn't win, but I didn't do as horribly as I had expected 2nd place, 2 seconds behind the leader.

I don't know anyone who has done this Mission with an automatic gearbox...

Congratulations FuryX21!

Feels great doesn't it? Having just passed it myself, I still remember the feeling of satisfaction and reward for all the hard work and practice. Have you now completed all the Missions? By your great description of your lap, it sounds like you had a few un-planned grass mowing excursions. Did you save the replay? It probably looks pretty wild.

Very well done.

GTsail290

Me too. In fact all my GT4 racing has been in an automatic with a ds2 controller. Missions and A-spec total. Now Famine has heard of Two. 👍

I have never taken the time to learn to use the manual gearbox, and have 3 separate gamesaves at 100%. The first time I had to hold the R1 button on my dualshock at the finish line because otherwise the time for the shift cost me first place. And yes, I learned that the hard way. I am on the USA version and currently chasing 100,000 A-spec points on my fourth gamesave. With the automatic. Status at 51.9% complete is 54,xxx A-spec points, have yet to get an international license. I guess that makes three of us on 34 with auto:)

Yep, all of the missions complete and all golds on the license tests. Still have a bunch of races left, only 64.8% complete, but I'll get there.

And yes I did save the replay. I'd upload it if I could.

I've done it!!!!!!!👍 (Japanese NTSC)

I've been getting closer and closer and finally today was the day. In the first one hour session, I got to within .700 of a second.

This afternoon, after a few retirements, I finally cracked it.:sly:

The Splits:

1:50.233
1:40.965
1:33.194
1:19.828
1:07.108 (starting to get nervous, it's on)
55.675
40.463 (getting real nervous) (passed the SL65 just after the Karussel)
31.210
25.077 (passed the SL500 coming through the Eiskurve chicane)
13.115 (passed the 190E2.5-16 Evoli just coming onto the final straight)
4.463
9:12.971 (-1.147)

Passed SLK230 just after the kink. Bad timing meant I had to pass him on the outside which sent me on onto the grass. :scared:I took my foot off the gas to try to control the car. :nervous: After sliding from one grass verge to the other under heavy breaking I just managed to do that and pull it up for the third to last turn. I passed the 300SL Coupe with two wheels on the grass exiting the final turn.:dopey:

Now, I'll be heading to the beer garden to celebrate my win after more than 100 times trying.

Cheers!

Congrats, flyingkiwi :)

Although... not to brag, or anything... but am I the only one on here who does this mission for fun?

I just find it a cool challenge, something different. It could do without the minute-long start, but still. I always go past the 300SL on the end of the straight just before the large bridge. It's great passing the 300SL at about 190mph, while he's doing... like... 100 👍

I used this mission as my primary moneymaker before I unlocked the Endurance-hall, but there is a rather important point I think you're overlooking;
We're both using the PAL-version..

The NTSC-version seems a terrifying challenge, whereas on PAL this isn't even the hardest mission in my opinion.

Hopefully in the near future I will be number four. Much of my time is over at the Online races but my 11yr old son wants me to pass 34. It means a new video game for him.

YouTube has a video for those who want to see how it's done with AT. Looks like the PAL version. Here's the info "PS2 GT4 Mission 34 SLR beats 300SL by 14,5 seconds". It's by miaaartudju.

I'm trying to figure out how to save it and put it on my memory card, so I can say I've completed 34. LOL.

Its such an accomplishment in my opinion. I bet that you had trouble going to sleep afterwards because you just wanted to re-live the winning moment!

I agree with your comment above about getting nervous as you see your good splits. You don't want to waste them and have to restart. I felt the same way. I guess this is a problem we have to live with because we get so familiar with the splits after 100 tries. I guess that if I was good enough to win this Mission easily, I wouldn't be watching the splits.:grumpy:

Was this the final Mission that you had to knock off?

Great work Flyingkiwi!
