Well I thought no one used 13" wheels anymore. That really looks terrible.

Aww, look at the baby wheels!

They debuted it here last month, and even with a team of pretty cheerleaders, couldn't lure much of the press over for their literal 15 minutes. Setting up shop across from Mazda probably didn't help

Each year, I'm amazed that they still sell cars here.

Two examples of how to build cars by a Japanese "independent". One is successful. The other could be considered a failure.

It looks like something Kia or Hyundai would make 10 years ago, and the interior looks like a poor attempt at updating a 90's Lancer. Mitsubishi seems to be in a very dark place atm.

I remember we had a Space Star as a hire car at work for a day last year. It was a horrid little tin can with wheels. It even smelled exactly like new Japanese cars used to back in the mid 90's - that weird sweetly and synthetic rubbery smell.

Maybe they're suffering because they axed the Evo?
Was the newer Evo selling well or no? That might be the issue. They don't have a mainstream sedan and their crossovers are middling in their class.

I can't find sales numbers for the U.S...

They're not exactly building cars that people want to buy, or that people know that they can buy. Haven't seen a piece of Mitsubishi marketing in years.

I've seen Outlander commercials, and local dealers pushing the Mirage (which is funny as it has no real selling points). The Lancer and the iMiEV might as well not exist based on their marketing.

But there's been 2 generations of every competitor since the Lancer came out in 2008... That tells you a lot about the state they're in.

I mean, if you just need basic transportation and don't care all that much about driving dynamics, why not? Cheap as hell, comes with a warranty, at a nearly disposable price. If you're just a basic commuter in a city like LA or Atlanta, it makes more than enough sense.

I can not imagine too much people buying the new Mitsubishi Mirage sedan. Very basic, cheap-y looks, and the Chevy Spark and Nissan Versa are cheaper, better buys.

Well, Mitsubishi's case is extremely sad. So sad in fact that it made me fantasize about my ideal non-suck Mitsubishi car lineup for 2016

  • New decently built, Focus sized hatch to get rid of the Mirage with. Called the Cyborg or something. Evo version with Golf GTI style performance included.
  • New Lancer Evo to compete with the WRX/Impreza duo. Boring model with regular engine and no body kit included.
  • Outlander XR-Phev Evo 4WD Turbodiesel Hybrid-Electric or something with lots of Cayenne performance and body kits just for the laughs.
  • A Subaru BRZ rival called the Starion just to round out the models nicely. Also an Evo version included here as well.
As a bonus, it would be nice to see the WRC getting its crap together too.

Starlet is Toyota. I think you mean Mirage Cyborg.

They need to do it, but they just keep thinking otherwise.

Nah. If anything they need to get themselves back to the midsize sedan game (if they even CAN do that), with a Galant. With a proper VR4.

Not so sure about that.

+Why replace the Mirage with a Focus instead of a Fiesta? Don't they have the Lancer for that?
+So, new Lancer with standard S-AWD and two performance models?
+SUVs do sell I guess and people do seem sorta excited for the Trailhawk...
+Isn't sales already bad for the BRZ/GT86/WTEVA these days?

Kind of sad reality when you think about it. Hyundai in just a short period of time now produces cars on equivalent to what Lexus and Infiniti provide. As well as entry level Germany exec/luxury cars. A group that went from utter crap in the 2000s and 90s transformed over night with sporty and economic cars of decent build. Now they have the ability to split of Genesis and N division as it's own arm. KIA is doing great with low priced nice looking economic cars on up to entry level sedans also of good quality compared to say ten years ago.

Why this is amazing to me is your comment rings true, this looks like a modern version of crap that would have been produced by those guys. And the fact that a company such as Mitsubishi (car division) as fallen so far is telling. The fact that 8 years ago if I was shown this and told who built it, I'd ask if you were sure.

These groups now hold probably more relevance in the market than Mitsubishi did at it's peak which was around the 90s to early 2000s. Which is why it's quite sad to see the dismal life support state it's in.

RIP Mitsubishi
