Modern car designs ugly?

Worst of them all for me is the Pontiac Aztec

Thankfully that link was broken

The Juke is a clearly defined car.
hsv
The Juke's just a normal crossover with a fun front end, the Puma is a long, roadster, off road, something, monstrosity?

Once again -> :crazy:

I'm sorry, but when I look at these, I don't see "fun". More frankly, a lot of the generic Crossovers look better than it in my opinion. I just can't help, but hate the design of it. The headlight shape & location, the big lights on the grill, and the grill itself. It just doesn't make a pretty face from my perspective

I despise the Juke, and yet I have nothing against the dang thing aft of the core support. That should tell you how I feel about the 🤬 front end.

Despite this, it's one of Nissan's best selling vehicles. Go figure.

I actually kind of like the Aztek...

Granted, my dad owned one for 12 and a half years until it got in an accident, but all of that exposure has made me look at cars differently (ex: Nissan Juke, Cube, Pontiac TranSport, etc.). Although I just can't bear to look at that Multipla. Man that thing is ugly in my perspective.

I'm inclined to believe that's due largely (though I don't by any means claim solely) to the segment in which it falls, but I think the squinty, top-mounted upper and round lower lights are a joke. (It's worse than I remembered, as the upper lights are aft of the core support.)

The Juke is polarizing, but it's well thought-out. At least better than the Aztek, whose split-level styling seemed a means of fruitlessly trying to cover up space... whereas on the Juke, it's done consciously to break up the styling and challenge the viewer. (Think Picasso versus a kindergartener...).

Good review:

(Vellum Venom is always worth a read)

In supercars maybe. I dunno I'm thinking the majority of cars on the market right now look pretty good. From that hot little Miata to the dull Camry, they all look good to me. Maybe not interesting, but at least they look good.

That's not fair. I think Pontiac deserves some credit for doing the initial heavy lifting when BMW reintroduced the 6 Series.

In other words, without the Aztek, the X6 would not exist? :D

That's... actually probably true.

Oh... the 6.

The 6... ye gods... that was a nightmare of odd proportions. (and this is coming from someone who liked the 5 and the Z4...)

Seems like anytime you put an additional grille over the headlights, or separate turn signals above the headlights, that the styling looks awkward. Both the Cruze and Aztek do this, as well as the Juke (which I think is just as repulsive as the Aztek).

Also, this is awful as well. Looks like a baleen whale. Note the same awkward grille/trim piece above the headlights.

Ugh...

how does a designer go 'yep, that's a good looking car' when it looks like THAT?

Because it's probably not meant to appeal to people who like cars, and more people wanting a unique visual statement.

As they don't like cars they don't care that it looks ugly as hell, and want to be different from all the BMW and Audi drivers in the world. Thus, the designers will be giving them this clear visual distinction from the German norm and probably didn't even say "Yep, that's a good looking car." Anyway.

Interesting piece.

I've always quite liked the Juke - I liked the Qazana concept and the Juke is just a mildly toned-down version of it. I can't really put my finger on what I like about it though. The wheel-at-each-corner thing is neat, the compact proportions are great and I just find most of the exterior elements far too interesting to find them ugly.

And my brain genuinely isn't wired to understand those who even several years after the car's launch still find it hideous. Partly because I don't find it ugly in the first place, and partly because such vehement dislike for something that's now so familiar is very odd indeed. Normally the shock value of something wears off pretty quickly - Bangle BMWs look far better now than they ever did in period - but it seems like some people are expending way too much energy to dislike something they don't have to live with.

To be fair, newer cars has gone better on design.

Blame 1980's! Compare any car from 1970's to the 1980;s seriously!
