Nice pictures again John. Luckily the weather was nice, some nice blue sky's there.

I enjoyed Imola, crests and dips aplenty. Qualified 5th*, raced around in circles a few times and finished 5th.

* Promoted to 4th by @lancerevoo's unfortunate disconnection.

Ever thought of running teams in Pcars @Sick Cylinder? SMS tend to group the car colours into two corresponding team mates. Where possible perhaps linking up a pro and a regular driver might work well.

Yes - we are running teams in the new Wednesday series and I know it's a late decision, but I have decided to restrict the colours to get the cars into teams in this championship to improve the photos - Pro and Pro+ drivers will be restricted to colours of similar to those of successful teams from the history of this championship. We could try pairing Pro with Am drivers in the future - maybe with the following series for the Lotus 49 (Tasman Championship). We will therefore choose colours for the Lotus 49 later and I will look at the balance of Pro to Am drivers again - ideally it should be equal.

Notice for All Drivers

I have decided to restrict the colour choices for the Lotus 40 as follows - therefore please re-pick as necessary:

Pro and Pro+ Drivers
Orange (McLaren) 3/4
Dark Orange (Surtees)14/15
White (Chaparral) 42/43
Light Blue (Penske) 7/8

Am Drivers
BRG (Lotus) 1 (Skip), 30 (Sick)
Pale Green (Moll Brothers) 32/33
Light Yellow (Boosman) 37/38
Black (Arnao) 5/6

Reserves
Silver 20/21

Apologies for any inconvenience, but I think this might enhance the pictures - also it might encourage some rivalry between the Pro teams and also between the different Am teams. We will try pairing Pro and Am in a future championship, but I think this type of pairing will give some interesting photos.

Yes - thanks so much for doing the photos John - you have taken some really great pictures this year!

Round 1 Preview
Below - I've found a brighter coloured and better sounding copy of highlights of the first ever can Am race, which was held in 1966 - the Players Quebec 200 at Saint Jovite, Canada at the Circuit de Mont Tremblant (what a great track this would be for the game!).

There was a question from John Wells a while back about why Jim Clark was racing an F2 car at the time of his death, which I promised to try and answer. Back in the mid 60's the tobacco companies were not allowed to sponsor cars, but they often sponsored races such as this one (a lot of races were also sponsored by Newspapers). The teams in F1 got their main income from the sale of cars to privateers in the various formulae e.g. Formula Junior, F2, F1, FA / F5000, Can Am - the largest manufacturer of racing cars was Brabham (run by Jack Brabham and Ron Tauranac). The teams second big source of income was from oil companies (some drivers such as Cliff Allison were paid their salary direct by the oil company which was linked to the team). Towards the end of the 1960's the oil companies withdrew or greatly reduced their financial support and to avert a crisis the FIA allowed Tobacco advertising of cars - the first I can remember being Gold Leaf Team Lotus - and soon the cars began to resemble mobile cigarette packets. Over a period of years the F1 teams stopped producing cars for other formulae - their business model had changed and their main income now came from sponsorship and very little (if any) came from racing car sales. At the time of Jim Clark's death this changeover was starting to take place, but he was contracted to race in various F2 races and was also contracted to Firestone tyres. It was probably a deflating rear tyre which caused the accident. The sale of F2 cars to competitors in the European and French F2 championships was very lucrative for Colin Chapman and Jim even won the French F2 championship in 1965 - the same year he won the Indy 500 and the F1 Championship.

There is a bit about the racing calendar followed by a top line driver such as Jim Clark on page 1 of the thread - he would race in multiple series across a whole year which would help create sales for Lotus.

I'll just say after trying out all of Wednesday's GTE cars coming back to the Lotus 40 is eye-opening! Where's the brakes for starters. :)

Watch out for that first corner. And all the rest for that matter. Especially the first corner though - brake early!

I'll see you all later. (Hopefully not at the first corner)

If any of you ever get the chance to visit the USA and are in the Midwest area, you must go to tour Indy. It is worth the trip, as it has a bus that runs you around the full main 2.5 mi. Course, and has a fantastic museum with most of the cars that ever won the 500...and many of the other vintage race cars that ran here. Somewhere in my things I have pics I took (my old film camera) there 15 years ago...if I can find them and digitize them, I will post.
Nearby to the track complex is the Dallarra USA shops where they build the Indy car chassis. I have not been there yet, but plan to next year..supposed to be a great tour of that as well!

@Napalm_LT[/USER] : again, so sorry for hitting you.

Hmm, I am a bit confused. From your cockpit view clear you didn't touch me, but I felt quite hard bump in the back. I will check my replay in the evening. It is not the first time I have accident, but me and driver from another car had different view (probably this is due to your livestream).
Another think - after start I had DT penalty warning, but in yours livestream it doesn't exist, insted of DT, after finish line of the first lap I got 5 s penalty in your video. When I did DT, i got that +5 s too, but don't understand why. I love this game, but thease things get me nervous.

I was shocked yesterday - was it mentioned somewhere start is rolling? I missed that. Actually I have never done manual rolling start and didn't know rules - got DT, was angry, disapointed, lost motivation and did huge amount of mistakes :)

Can someone explain rolling start rules?
I guess there is some speed limit? This speed limit is valid all time before green, or I can accelerate, but current speed while green is on should be under limit?
Everybody have start light or should accelerate only then driver in front accelerates?

Maybe the livestream made me lag... but i tested this before and never happened to this extent.
Rolling start - Sick updated the first posts.
The leader has a 120 kph limit until green lights, and following drivers must hold their positions.
Also everyone has to be careful not to bump anyone, as this would mean a 5s penalty as well.
Most of the time the DT penalties work well, but sometimes they're bugged. Maybe yesterday was the case...

At the start my car was in a different view, so had go through them, I passed people that had went off track, before the start, is that allowed?

Crashed into Skip who was out of control going across track, my car launched over him, I had no damage, so you weren't damaged. The kerbs seem to be quite slippery, so I tried not too touch them.

I accidentally ran in to Rich at first chicane, I could see a white dot coming, with lots red, Sick got by, than caught him when let the others past.

Other than that was good race made some mistakes, think we all had those.

In the track history says the attendance is for 400,000 people.:D

Sounds like I missed a bit of a wild race. I've not tried the Lotus 40 yet but given that @IfAndOr wants the 98T back it sounds a bit intimidating...

Pedal update – Thrustmaster have told me they'll send me a replacement set, but first I have to send them a pic of me destroying the old ones by cutting the wire! Hopefully my replacement set will come by next Monday – if I can bring myself to destroy some four-month-old pedals for the sake of one dodgy pod...

Oh well, at least I could use the spares when the next set breaks...

Luckily I had my one spin away from the crowds then. :P

I had been practicing the rolling starts so knew what to expect. At indy you're dropped in just before the sharp corner which makes it more difficult.

It's not too bad @joedakiss. It's a bit like the 98T but with less grip - but also without the turbo. I should image Sonoma is going to be interesting!

Guess I missed this update from Sick...I too was very surprised by rolling start, but got thru it ok.
Question though: is it for all remaining races or just that one???

The rolling start is a feature of the next two Wednesday Series - GTE and Australian V8 Supercars and will be used for both those series. Although rolling starts were not used in the 1966 Can Am or 1968 Tasman Series I decided to bring the Monday series in line with what we are doing on Wednesday to keep things standard and so that we get more practise. I am hoping that the rolling starts will result in less accidents.

In my view the correct way to do an online rolling start is to set the "Start Lights" to "Off" in the options. Maintain a low speed and stay in grid order then when the green flag shows (in the bottom right of the screen) accelerate gently. The driver on pole position should accelerate vigorously after passing the start line and seeing the green flag.

It is worth doing a few one lap practise races from the middle or back of the pack to see how the game handles the rolling start on each track. Premature acceleration, overtaking or contact with other cars will result in the game issuing penalties - Drive Through penalty and extra seconds (currently set to a maximum of 5 seconds).

Note - It is worth scanning posts 1 - 7 on page 1 before each new series begins - there is normally some new information and changes.

Other changes include:
Qualifying has been moved from 14:00 to 16:00 in both series (I cannot set it to the day prior to the race, but this sets it at the most common time for real life "main event" qualifying. Time progression for qualifying has been changed from real to X 2.
Race Start has been moved from 15:00 to 14:00 in the Can Am series. Time progression has been changed from real to X 5 which simulates a 2.5 hour race (in real life the races were normally 2 hours)

Race numbers and liveries - it is always a struggle getting all the numbers and colours from all participants so I have decided to issue the numbers for this series - the numbers are shown in the table below and in post 1 on page 1. I apologise that for some of you this will involve a change.

Lotus 40 Round 1 of 5 Indy Road.jpg

The next series - Lotus 49 Tasman - will feature teams comprising one Pro (or Pro+) ranked driver with one Am ranked driver. The highest scoring Pro driver will be paired with the lowest scoring Am driver (Regulars only) and so on and etc. The teams should therefore score roughly equal points over the course of the seven rounds. NB if necessary there will be one or two promotions from Am to Pro of the highest scoring Am drivers at the end of the Lotus 40 championship to keep the teams even at two drivers each.

Below Team colours and numbers for the upcoming Tasman series:
