Below - Cars and Race Numbers for Monday 12th November

Round 7 Monzanapolis Car List.jpg

The race is at the Monza Oval and will be in 2 heats of 15 minutes each, preceded by 5 minutes practise and 5 minutes qualifying.

I strongly recommend watching the following short documentary film about the original race in 1957 which we are re-enacting (note - we are using the Aston Martin DBR1/300 in place of the D Type Jaguars and the Agajanian Watson Roadster in place of the Indy cars. Note 2 the Agajanian in the game is very similar to the Indy cars used in 1957 and 1958).

Note re racing on the Monza Oval - it is much safer to overtake on the straights - it is very difficult to pass cleanly on the banked corners as the cars slide a lot - so this is best avoided - focus on getting a good corner exit for a pass on the straight.

Vice-Champion IfAndOr
How did I manage that!

IfAndOr is promoted to Pro.
Damn. I've been practising in the Agajanian. :P

Do you want us to drive anticlockwise Sick? :)

Although it's normally frowned upon for general use, can I suggest the reset to track button might be used more often in this race. Being stuck facing the wrong way on track when cars are approaching at very high speeds isn't ideal.
And perhaps visual damage only? :scared: Because damage will probably be significant, once you've stopped for repairs you're never going to catch up again. Or it might be more realistic to retire and wait for the next race?

@IanBell Please can we have a reverse layout of the Monza Oval so that we can use the fabulous vintage Indy cars in their natural direction and as they raced in 1957 and 1958 - thanks muchly

In this round we recreate the 1957 Monzanapolis 500 otherwise known as "The Race of Two Worlds". It will serve as a test round for a three round series planned for 2019, timed to coincide with the build up to the Indy 500. I am hoping that our normal damage settings will work ok and we will be able to stick with this format next year, but we will see. When testing in single player mode it seemed ok, but patience and care is needed.

Hopefully we can avoid crashes. Maybe we can do a trial at the weekend before Monday's race.

Below a news clip of the 1958 race:

Hopefully we can avoid crashes. Maybe we can do a trial at the weekend before Monday's race.
I've had a go against the AI in the Aston and it's not to bad, I didn't crash. A lot of the AI did though, in quite comical ways. That was a "full" grid of 16 cars. Around 1 minute a lap so we're going to be giddy. :)

We can certainly test it at the weekend if you're around. But since there's 2 races we'll probably be ok.
Since it's an oval race are we doing our normal standing or trying a rolling start?

Note to all: Don't press return to race central after the first race, a second race will follow.

Did some testing, today, hats off to the guys who did it for real. Had severe damage with the Al, just the armco, so turned it off. Had really big crash, made myself up the field to finish 6. Anyone hasn't practised give it a try.👍

I might shorten the races on Monday to 10 minutes - my right foot is hurting quite badly (I have Plantar Fasciitis) plus 15 minutes on this track feels like forever!

As John says, massive respect for the guys who raced here for real. In real life it was so bumpy that suspension and steering failures were common. Luigi Musso even had a lap belt fitted as he was concerned about being thrown out of the car by the bumps - that was at a time when drivers didn't wear seat belts! I also read an account of the sump being torn off an engine by the bumps. The drivers had to learn where the worst bumps were all while lapping slower cars and racing at up to 177mph.

For this race if you are being lapped stay high so the faster car can go past on the inside - I am sure I remember reading that the Jaguar drivers agreed to do this in 1957!

I met a chap at Brands Hatch this summer who was racing a Kurtis Indy Roadster, which had previously raced at Monzanapolis and Indy - he told me the car had 2.5 gears! There is an ultra low speed crawler gear for driving from the paddock to the track plus two race gears of which he uses first at the race start, but at the Brands Indy circuit he only uses second gear for the whole of the rest of the race - even at the hairpin! Below 1954 Kurtis - I was impressed by how physically large the car seemed up close. 4.2 litre 4 cylinder Offenhauser engine has phenominal torque at all revs according to driver.

Slide 5 Kurtis 500.jpg

Below - the Ecurie Ecosse (Scottish) Team were so impressed with the performance of their D Type Jaguars - they had just won Le Mans in 1957 then went straight to Monza where they performed reliably, but were outclassed by the Indy Cars. They built this car, based on a D Type, specially for the 1958 Monzanapolis - I was lucky enough to see it race against the Kurtis at Brands in 2018.

Slide 4 Jag Monza.jpg

To reduce the risk of accidents we will start in our normal way, but with no overtaking on the 1st lap - single file - pole position driver to pace the field at a comfortable, but high speed e.g. 100mph+

I wasn't sure if Andreas had saved them so I'd thought I'd post the results anyway.

Couldn't miss John being up there in 1st place. Well done indeed. 👍 👍
Oh and Oldbass for race 2. Good to see you guys up top for a change.

I know DD does his videos and apologies if im stepping on his toes.

Aston @ Sugo

First video is in TT mode in loose setup, but I found the stable setup better for a race, 2nd video, less work with the wheel :)

Lap breakdown from the stable setup in race mode.
@Oldbass47 and anyone else.

Turn 1: Brake at the 150 marker board that is on the left hand side wall, release the brake and turn into the corner, applying a little throttle in the corner (apex speed about 60 mph) so you'r still scrubbing some speed so you run wide to the kerb ready for turn 2.

Turn 2: You should of scrubbed the speed from turn 1 to around 52 mph on the outside kerb, dont touch the brake and use the accelerator gently to hit the apex of turn 2 at around 58 mph, apply more throttle (not full) once you pass the concrete that is on the inside of the kerb, run the car to about a few meters from the exit kerb so you can pull it back across for turn 3.

Turn 3: Not running to wide from 2 allows you to pull the car back to right side of the track, you should get to the right (about 72 mph) so you are able to turn left into turn 3 before the kerb on the right hand side, holding a bit of throttle keep your speed around 73 mph, once the car is facing the caravans on the side of track you should be able to apply full throttle.

Note between turn 1 and turn 3 I dont apply full throttle till the exit of turn 3 and I dont use the brakes once ive finished braking for turn 1.

Turn 4: Brake point, there is a gravel line that runs to right of track by about 2 meters, were the gravel line turns right is the braking point for turn 4. (around 29 secs on the video you will see the gravel line and the kink). Turn in to turn 4 aiming to hit the apex were the concrete starts inside the kerb, (around 42 mph), then apply the throttle gently until the car is stable and as straight as possible to apply full throttle, aiming for the start of the yokohoma signs outside the track

Turn 5-6 chicane: took to much kerb in the video, dont brake for the chicane, release the throttle then use the throttle gently to control your speed through the chicane, turn in just before the kerb on the right, release throttle then gently apply to keep your speed through the chicane around 60 mph, apply full throttle once the car is settled.

Turn 7: just after the 50 mtr mark on the wall on the left or just before the dark patch of track, start to turn in when you see the green board on the wall aiming to get the mph down to around 57mph. On exit feather the throttle till the car is straight then apply full throttle.

Turn 8: brake just before the start of the dark patch on track, turning in and aiming to hit the apex at the end of the inside kerb around 53 mph, you should then be able to apply full throttle so you get a good exit for the straight. (you might need a bit of countersteer on exit, if youre struggling apply full throttle a bit later) top speed around 130 mph before braking for turn 9.

Turn 9: move to the middle of track so you can brake in a straight line and to avoid the little bump, braking point is the 150 mtr board on the wall on the left hand side. Aim to get your speed down to around 54 mph and aim to hit the apex when the concrete starts just inside the kerb, then hold the kerb until the concrete ends when you can start applying the throttle.

Turn 10: again brake just before the dark marks on the track, turn in and aim to just clip the kerb around 70 mph, I took it in 3rd in race run I did as it helped look after the rear tyres a bit.

Turn 11: lift of the throttle and turn in when the dark patch on the track starts, should scrub your speed to around 69 mph hitting the apex then apply full throttle.

Turn 12: Lift off the throttle, but try to keep a little bit applied, turn in just before the 50 mrt board on the left wall and scrubing your speed down to 70 mph, then aim your car for the 2nd exit road on the inside and keep on the inside till you pass the red patch on the barrier, the car should drift out nicely for the start finish straight.

Racers - The table below shows points scored and the car and race number to use

View attachment 777116

How the above table works - Example Jocke uses white Ferrari number 19 for rounds 5,6, 9 and 10; Jocke uses green Aston number 4 for rounds 7 and 8.
Note - Drivers without DLC can use Aston Martin DBR1/300 number 32, 33, 50 or 51 for all rounds.
**************
Note change to start procedure - now Standing Start, Pole Position car goes first, then start row by row - set off after car in front when safe - no overtaking until after first corner

Please take the time to watch this marvelous film of the 1957 Sebring World Championship Sports Car Race - it's a dramatized documentary which follows privateer MG racer David Ash.

I'm quite surprised won a race, got some damage in second so had too pit. In practice had only had the Indy cars, the Al crash a lot in the first turn.

I had quite a few blue flags on the second race, pushing up the field, so might have been me Old.:)

Don't know what happened in 2nd, race but I was winning ( and should have won ) letting drivers pass to unlap them selves then WOW what's going on,,,,
Oh dear! I caught you unawares then. I'd assumed you'd got some damage and was limping around to the line. You did win your class though, so that's a victory. 👍

Congratulations to the 1957 Monzanapolis Champion @IfAndOr !!
Can we just do single event meetings from now on. I'm in with a chance then it seems.

I like oval racing, it's quite tactical. You have to play the long game. And not crash, that's quite important. :)

Special mention for those using controllers, it must have been tricky holding a constant line around the banked corners. Nice one.

I've uploaded a highlight video to YouTube from Monday. Unfortunately it's only from my captured perspective, not from the in game replay, although hopefully you can all still have a good laugh at my numerous balls-ups.

I really enjoyed it nevertheless.

Sorry for the bump Rich, was off the throttle but I couldn't get below you quick enough, initially thought I could go over the top of you on the approach and realised too late to adjust!

Well done to all you podium guys, and anyone that made it round in either race (unlike me!).

P.S. So from the PS chat we have Old playing bass, I'm assuming Rich plays guitar. I'm a penis, I mean pianist. Any other potential band mates here?

I think that was me Old, please accept my apologies. There were so many crashes between the races that I can't remember which was which, but I believe I lost the back end on a bump just as I was passing you and wiped you out  Sorry!

I reckon the race might have been less manic with slower or more evenly matched cars. With the oval setup the Aga was hitting 190mph-plus – with no aero!! – and the closing speeds on the Astons were frightening. Huge fun though – maybe again for the Xmas fun race?!

the Aga was hitting 190mph-plus
I've thought about this and I can't actually recall how fast the Aston was going! I must have been to busy just hanging on. I know the Agas were a bit of a blur though.

maybe again for the Xmas fun race?!
Monzanapolis in the snow, now that would be interesting. Perhaps interesting isn't quite the right description. :)

Great shots John. You've captured the thrills without the spills. Tricky to do I expert. :)
You've also captured the extremely steep banking very well.

Any other potential band mates here?
I wouldn't by any stretch of my imagination call myself a pianist but I do like lcd displays and pressing buttons with flashing led's. So me being me and my love of gadgetry amongst it I've got a quite lot of electronic musical equipment.

Yamaha DJX keyboard/sequencer/sampler
Yamaha RM1X sequence remixer
Roland SP-606 sampling workstation
Korg Koas Pad dynamic effect/sampler
Korg Kaossilator dynamic phase synthesiser
Boss 8 track digital studio
Apco mixing desk
Behringer near field monitor speakers
And lots of cables!

There you go, I said I liked my gadgets.

Many many years ago I used to have a few synths, drum machines and tape decks etc. which I used to play (well programme mainly) in a duo and later a band, just for fun. I'd sold most of the stuff but watching YouTube videos of the latest equipment rekindled my interest. So just a few years back, when I had a bit more money than sense, I bought some secondhand stuff off eBay. It sounded good but hasn't been connected up for a couple or so years. Funnily enough I plugged a couple of things in last weekend but now I've got to read the manuals again because I've forgotten what all the buttons do!

We just need Sick on vocals and we're sorted. Band name? 6Crew :P

Hi Rich, just bought the Gretch Jet junior bass .

Nice stuff yourself @richroo.

Two things I've found about cables over the past few days.
1/ You can never find the correct cable, even though you know you've got one.
2/ If you are lucky enough to find it you can guaranty it's tangled up with one you don't want.

How about a Jews Harp
You're in. :)

Nice @Oldbass47 mine plays really nice for a affordable guitar, was played by my band mates dad (Name drop ) paul fox of the ruts and he liked it too ..

Exactly that @IfAndOr lol ..
Always helped our sound guy , but we liked pulling his leg over the elastic bands used as cable ties .. hehe
