I don't think it was excessive speed @Napalm_LT. I'd been practising and found out Daytona is very susceptible to pit lane entry speeds.
What I think it was is that I entered the pits in slightly the wrong place. Because the pit lane has quite a wide entrance I'd misjudged it and gone in a little too far to the left. The AI "grabbed" my car and slid it to the correct position on the right and in doing so it ended up facing the barrier. The AI then took over in auto-drive and drove forward straight into that barrier. It then shuffled the car backwards and forwards into the barrier while it tried to sort out what to do.
Because I'd been practising using manual pitstops* I hadn't encountered that before.
The trouble was, besides loosing time, I'd switched off the repair damage option for that pitstop so it came out damaged. The steering was pulling to the left which was luckily the right way for the track.
Note for future Daytona meetings - enter the pit lane further to the right. And slowly.
*Manual pitstops work well on the Ovals. You really need to pay attention to prevent getting a penalty. In fact manual pitstops are good everywhere. Hint hint.
