Without any V8 Supercars knowledge, I'm going to throw Mercedes and Nissan in the mix with Volvo. They are in the sport now, so they could have been before as well!
Liquid already got the Volvo, but Nissan is correct. They had a couple of immensely unpopular victories in the early '90s

Interesting question, if we are sticking to only the Bathurst 1000 run as part of the ATCC, then it would be the Nissan GTR driven by Mark Skaife and Jim Richards in 1992.

But if we're including the super tourers Bathurst 1000, then it would be a Volvo S40 in 1998 driven by Jim Richards and Rickard Rydel.

Jaguar might have won Bathurst. Possibly Austin or another British Leyland marque as well.

I think you are going of my pre-edited question, but the logic is sound. I had forgotten to account for the super-tourer thing in 1997-98.

Jaguar did indeed win, with an XJ-S, in 1985. You are on the right track with the other.
Jaguar, Nissan and Mini, or Austin, depending on how it was branded
It was officially recorded as a Morris Cooper S, but Mini is a good enough guess for me.
-------

So, we have Volvo (Liquid), Nissan (Pezzarinho17), Jaguar (Liquid) and Austin/Mini/Morris (Liquid/LumpiestFish, depending on how pedantic you want to be on names). One to come.

To keep the Australian theme going..

How many Australians have made starts in NASCAR and who are they? The 3 national series all count, drivers who took part in the Calder Park exhibition races do not.

Come on, antipodeans, help us out here.

Honestly, the only one I know of for certainty is Marcus Ambrose. By "three national series" do you mean the Senior, Junior and Truck series?

I'd guess at 15 or so.

My first instinct is that it is a smaller number than Liquid guessed, maybe around ten? I can't for the life of me think of any names though. Craig Lowndes went overseas for a while to try and make it, but I think he stuck to Europe. There must have been some in the '80s though...

Sprint, Xfinity and Trucks.

Barra is closest so far.

One of them is very well known, every single Australian race fan would know who he is. One of them has a couple of part time drives lined up in the Xfinity series for this season, and another is looking for drives on the road courses in the Xfinity series this season.

Would Moffat count? He's from Canada originally and might have had a brief dalliance in NASCAR.

I'm sure some of the old guard like Peter Brock, Allan Grice or Larry Perkins must have had a race or two.

Dick Johnson, Marcos Ambrose and Owen Kelly... not sure who the fourth driver is, though I do remember seeing an article about them on either Speedcafe or Auto Action recently.

Stiggy has named 3, Liquid got one with Allan Grice. Took part in the Coca Cola 600 in 1986 as well as a couple of others. One of the remaining drivers went over with Grice, although he is lesser known. All of the remaining drivers are lesser known, apart from one currentAly racing.

So someone from that 80s era was with Grice? If it isn't Perkins or Brock it might be John Bowe or Alan Jones.

Yes, someone from the 80s, but not any of the drivers you mentioned.

EDIT: so it turns out that this particular driver is actually from NZ. Oops

Here is a question I don't know the answer to.

In 2017 the formula weight of F1 cars will go up to 722 kg plus tires. When was the last time F1 cars weighed this much?

I do know that between 1934-1937 the European Drivers' Championship had an absolute 750kg maximum weight formula. For 1938 and 1939 the cars could weigh as much as 850kg depending on the engine specifications.

The 1946-1949 Grand Prix era was using the same voiturette formula as before. Alfa Romeo used the pre-war-built 158s and 159s until the end of 1951, which might be in the 750-850kg region. I'm really not sure about after that though.

Even the infamous, 'heavy' 1995 Forti was around 590kg and the 1997 Lola was only around 530-550kg.

I'm finding a weight of 710kg for the 1951 Tipo 159 Alfetta. http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/spec/1106/Alfa-Romeo-159--Alfetta-.html

So the next generation of F1 cars are to be the heaviest since before WWII.

No wonder tire wear and blowouts are such big concerns.

I have researched a relatively successful F1 car which weighed 850kg or even 950kg without fuel according to differing sources, and another (unsuccessful) which tipped the scale at only 350kg. The lightest car I know of which successfully competed in the championship weighed 445kg. Can anyone name them?

The last time a manufacturer competed in the British Touring Car Championship despite that manufacturer not being available in the UK domestic market.

Year / Manufacturer

Good question :) it's got me racking my brains.
