Mustanng's GMC build

GMC and Chevy are the same thing  The only difference is the steering wheel, front grille and a couple electronic features. It's like comparing a 2 door Cherokee to a 4 door Cherokee. Everyone around here is in the "if it ain't diesel, it ain't ****" mindset. So me and my buddies like to mess with them...

I would recommend bedliner for your next modification.

I'm with ya entirely, except that I'll be putting a new bed on this thing or getting dents removed from the current one first. I hate a metal bed floor though. Everything is loud, slides around, etc. Plus it's ugly

It's pretty annoying honestly. Can't even find an OBS 6.9 or 7.3 in decent shape for less than $8k. And then those have 210k on them

Yeah, the prices for OBS Ford's are ridiculous around here too, of course so are the prices for 1st and 2nd Gen Dodges. I had someone offer me $20K for my truck a few months ago, people are paying stupid prices for these things.

I had planned on buying an OBS Ford, ripping the engine out and putting a 12 Valve Cummins in but I can't find anything worth a damn for a remotely reasonable price.

Second "race" test of the GMC. First time I smoked my buddy's 06 Silverado 4.3. Last night, proved it to be faster than a '07 F150 5.4

This is a whole new world... my F150 was one of the slowest things on the road

I'd like to introduce you to my '84 turbo diesel Mercedes.

The only thing I've driven that was slower was a non-turbo diesel Mercedes.

 you got me there!

I did run the Ford once down the track... 20.2@68mph!

1/8th mile? or 1/4?

If that's the 1/4 mile that's not all that bad for a 6 cylinder Ford pickup. They were slow, but man did they have the torque when needed.

That's quarter mile. With a 2.5" lift, 31x10.50s and 3.08 gears... The thing just didn't have any balls around town. 0-35 was good, but after that it crawled!

Not bad at all. My friends stock truck on 31x9.75s with the 6 cyl runs 12's in the 1/8th and it's the same generation yours ran.

You can make those engines fast but the aftermarket is expensive. Not what it is for the V8's and it's much easier just to swap one in anyways.

But then again, those trucks were never meant to be fast anyways.

I wanna say mine did 13.5ish in the 1/8th. I've lost the time slip, but I know I was doing 55mph when I crossed the 1/8th mile

I want to get this GMC down the track.. maybe I'll do that thursday. It's definitely got some balls, that's for sure! Probably low 16s. If it hits 15s I'll be amazed

"Couple bolt ons" :P

My buddies stock 305 2WD GMC ran 10.5's in the 1/8th, I think thats about a 16. You might hit mid 15s.

Well Saturday is street heat down at the track. So before I crack cold ones and watch people break their Hondas, either my bike or my truck is going down that track. Searching out a clutch cable right now for my SV (last cheap POS lasted 1500 miles), and the ole Sierra is ready to ride out as it sits

The ole GMC ran a 17.1 for me! Could barely hook off the line due to the whole one wheel wonder rear end, and after I finished up and started drinking it hit me that I still have 41 psi in the rears from a trailer I pulled the week before. It did great there too. 25 foot tandem axle open car hauler with an engine hoist on it, and then a whole subframe for a fiero in the bed of the truck. Went to go get another fiero for my buddy. 70 miles later, not a single problem, and the truck still did 75 down the interstate with just a little pedal. Got like 9mpg though lol

And I've also began the lift. Got the 4" spindles on the front, new tie rod ends, and aligned it at work yesterday. Still need to find some new lug nuts so I bolt on the wheel adapters, and then got the stock rear leaf spring shackles to bring that back up some too. But I'm starting to get excited

Why does it look like the back is sagging so much? Those tires shouldn't fill the wheel well up that much.

Looks like you need to readjust those mirrors. You obviously can't see the lines for the parking space... :P

You didn't intentionally do the Carolina squat did you?

So that's the term for every lifted truck around here I've seen like that *plus the dual exhausts with blown out glasspacks*? I just thought it was called not knowing how to properly lift a truck (level or slightly higher in the back). 💡 Anyways, nice truck mustangGT and please lift it properly. ;)

No intentional carolina squat, no worries

The rear of this truck still has 2" drop shackles on it. Addressing that with my next pay check. Gonna bring that back to stock, and still leave the nose a little up because I like the cali lean... but the squat is too much right now!

It's also far from practical right now, I've already trimmed the bumper and still hitting the rear of the wheel well on the fender. I'm hoping lifting the back will help that. And if it still is utterly unpractical to turn, I can get a 1.5" leveling kit to toss on up front. But then I'll need some blocks for the rear to go with the leveling kit and this whole thing just starts getting expensive haha

On the plus side, I've only got $640 into the fun stuff. The lift, tires, wheel adapters and new tie rods

Sitting with my buddy's 06 2wd. 5.5" lift up front on this, versus 4" for mine. Both on 33 inch tires. Mine are 12.50 wide, his are 11.50. No wheel adapters for him, so less stance

It would look way cooler if the ass was in the air and the front was down.

Man I miss the aggressive stance of 33x12.5s. Adapters or not.

See, I'm more of a nose up guy. Maybe it's my inner florida boy talking or something, but I like the lean.

Or maybe it's because I want to try something different. My F150 was face down ass up after it sat level. So now I can play with the nose up... I'll figure it out  Until then, still happy with the truck, love looking at it, so life is good!

Went to a bonfire, had 7 people sitting the back of my truck, and had my rear fenders resting on tires

Time to fix that a little bit. And lucky me, the master tech I work with is getting transferred to a store closer to his home, and since he's kind of packrat, and now has to get rid of some stuff, I ended up with a set of 3" lift blocks for free :D

Update to the GMC - She has a name now, and I'm gonna call her Gina.

In other news, I ordered my new muffler today, a Summit Racing brand Race Muffler AKA Flowmaster Super 10 knock off.

And in terms of maintenance, the list is growing:
Idler arm fixed for the 3rd time (Should have bought Moog, but I'm being cheap)
Pitman arm is still good from being replaced back in May
New outer tie rods
Repacked, tightened wheel bearings
New brake calipers
New wiper motor pulse board
Fixed the hose routing for the windshield sprayer so it works
Messed with the sound system and fixed the short in the back speakers
Oil change, engine flush, and full fuel system service 2 days ago. Runs a lot smoother now :)

It's almost time to start looking at cosmetics, only have a few mechanical bits left to address.
- Upper and lower control arm bushings (I'll end up buying MOOG control arms, for $320 I get all new arms, bushings, and ball joints)
- Rear shackles
- Front 2" spring spacer
- Transmission flush

It's starting to come together pretty nicely!

The single chamber muffler is on.. and she sounds nice and beefy! I dig it. No drone either, something I really appreciate after my F150 and it's constant drove at 45mph with the exhaust it had on it.

Made a junkyard run today looking for an AC/Heat control head for the dash. I'm tired of not being able to turn on my heat, or fan, or anything because my control is fried. Found 2 in the junkyard, both originals from '92, and both were in the same shape as mine. So I may have to pony up the $200 for a brand new one. Eww..

But I didn't leave empty handed, of course  Still have some finese to work on the fitment here (aka drilling some holes for the bottom mounts for the grille instead of zip ties, but it's on there at least. Opinions welcome on which grille you guys like better on there.

New grille, from a '95 Sierra

And the original, '92 grille, painted gloss black

Did some research, got the newer style grille installed as right as possible, and it all lines up now.
