NASCAR in GT5!

The only thing I’m really disappointed about…potentially… is the lack of a restrictor plate at Daytona. I think a lot of people that weren’t big fans of NASCAR coming into GT5, would have enjoyed being 2 and 3 wide for laps upon laps… being in last place but only 6 car lengths away from the leader… bump drafting and the strategy that involves getting through a pack of cars when it seems there is no room to work and really no room for error… bump drafting…

It’s early and we could be wrong, but I think this would have been a HUGE success online had RPs come into play at Daytona. Maybe we just haven’t seen GTs way of doing this, but I’ve been in countless races online with other Sims and I can tell you, there is nothing like being up against the wall fighting for the lead with 1 or 2 guys under you and a train of cars pushing you around a Super Speedway – It’s simply AMAZING.

I thought we could trick the system and possibly have “Fixed Setup Races” to give the impression that the car was under power and mimic a Restrictor Plate, but with each livery being labeled as a different car (vs. 1 car with different liveries - which really is correct) I don’t know if the system will understand that the setup needs to be the same for (12/16 cars that really are the same, but are treated like 12/16 different cars?)…

COT Setup Idea (maybe)

How about a Simple Final Drive Ratio Rule , Find a Final Ratio via Testing that keeps the Final speed down to a Realistic Speed

Usually all the Race type Cars in Gran Turismo Have Adjustable Gear Ratio's

No Restrictor Plate is needed then as the Final Drive Ratio will determine the Rev Limit and Speed in Top Gear

All Assists off and only 1 type of tyre allowed

No Engine Mods allowed , But free Choice in Areo and 1 through 4 Gears you can adjust to suit yourself

If I remeber rightly the real Nascar Restrictor Plate Cars have a Final gear Rule at Daytona and Talledaga

That would be way easier to implement and yup 16 Cars Drafting each other would be a lot fun aswell :D

I'm pretty sure a real unrestricted NASCAR would be that fast on super speedways.

Still, a restrictor shouldn't be too difficult to implement.

I believe Bill Elliot was running around one of the speedways at well over 220 in an old thunderbird in the late 80's before restrictor plates and they werent the most aerodynamic things either...my guess is the new ones could hit 230-240 but people (fans and drivers) would die as cars would be going into orbit frequently.

Elliot averaged 212.809 on daytona (AVERAGED!)...this was in 1987! ( I had an 88 tbird and for some reason I couldnt get it to go that fast)

NASCAR mandates transmission ratios and the rear gear choice at tracks. Doubt GT5 went to this extent though.

With the February spec Daytona plates, while testing the new spoiler at Talladega, I believe Dale JR was lapping above 210, as well as commenting on how there was no real difference in feeling, which I understand, because the place is huge. Of course, NASCAR mandated a change to smaller plates for the April race, so we never saw those speeds. Daytona was just too bumpy to actually go that fast. Now that its paved, those speeds are very possible, but after the pre-season test, Nascar will pick a plate to keep them in the same speed bracket they always run. But IMO, Speedweeks is going to be insane.

But, trying to stay relevant, I'm sure we can adjust the car before an online race, so I like the gear idea, or even possibly limit the horsepower to something like 450-475. If we can drop it that low, I know in GT5p, you could only go so far with the power.

After the holidays.. January

I see going to start around the Daytona 500. Plus it well give some people time to get ready. I can help you with linking the pages, I had my own Web Page Design company. I still build pages from time to time.

Did you ever use Joomla?

Yes, my thoughts were to give people time to finish the game. And get back from vacation. We should be starting 2nd or 3rd week of January. [on the qualifier]

Don't forget, we will have tire tests not too long from now.

This call goes out to anyone. But I will need race administrators & moderators

  1. Organize Event for Tier
  2. Record times
  3. Post on website
  4. enforce rules
  5. has extra time before and after races

Again, more information will be revealed as the weeks come. Once we get a Online Racing forum in GT5 forum, I will start posting information about everything.

The update on the GT site states that the advanced (3rd tier) challenge of the JG NASCAR School is "proper Pit Exit".

Some hope for official NASCAR rules\format.

Maybe a speed limiter function?

A few minutes ago i made a track like Pocono (tri-oval), i`ll try later to make it with banking (if i can)
Post a picture of the track you just done please.

Man if we could make banking.... keep us posted on that track. It's up to us to make better tracks. Indy and daytona what a shame....

No cars in NASCAR has speed limiters. Its not allowed.

My Nascar at Laguna Seca video (1st lap S curve I spin out) lol...so fun...such a thrill with the sound cranked

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Crjg5IkHHNw

Geeze hardly any body roll. That's depressing.

Subsonic, I was thinking Martinsville should be doable, even if they take banking option from us. Let us know asap how it went. Wont get to try that until I get my copy after work tonight.

Wow, no noticable body roll at all, despite what the G force meter is showing. They got so caught up drawing the car they forgot to program body roll? Its like driving Hotwheels. No wonder evey one is spinning out. I'll be lowering the suspension to its lowest to test this out, it could just be he had high spring settings, but still, stock cars roll A LOT more than that on tv on road courses

I just saw a video from the GTPlanet news deal with that pit stop. I thought the pit stop looked pretty accurate. Nobody said that Gran Turismo 5 was going to be a through-and-through NASCAR simulation now, right? I think PD should be commended for their work with NASCAR if anything. They could have just stunk up all the NASCAR material to where everything seems completely unauthentic. I think PD did a great job- very decent sounds, great-looking cars, quite decent damage model... I'd give PD an 8 out of 10 (or even an 8.5). This, speaking as a person who has experience with "NASCAR Racing" and "NASCAR Racing: 1999 Edition" for the PC. I know I haven't played "NASCAR Racing 2003 Season," but I think GT5 with NASCAR is very good.

And once again- I don't think you can trust a Japanese developer to capture the absolute essence of the purely American motorsport of NASCAR (or at least, without hissy fits from purists). I say if you're on the bad side of PD for NASCAR, I'd give them some credit from what they were able to put into GT5. And I am just going on videos and the GT5 kiosk demo in saying all of this.

As a NASCAR fan I really like what Jeff Gordon says when you first try out NASCAR. Like he knows NASCAR doesn't get much respect from road guys. So far the handling at daytona seemed very very arcade. Oh well thanks for the effort PD.
