I actually really liked having one Daytona race at exactly 50 laps, as it's the absolute limit of a zero stop strategy for our power-limited cars. Could someone get their tires to last 50 laps without pitting? Could someone run a one stop strategy and run down a car that's trying to go without pitting? I think it would make for a GREAT race on pit strategy alone. In fact, I wouldn't do a single race at Indy or Daytona Oval that was less than 40 laps. Anything less is just too short. The laps just fly by at the oval tracks. We don't have to do 100 laps every time, but we should aim for at least 50-75 laps most of the time, with a couple 40 lap sprints mixed in for variety.
I would extend Daytona Road and Indy Road from 20 laps each to 30 laps each, just so the races aren't too short. One little mistake, and you might not have enough time to make up ground on the leaders.
By that same logic, I would extend High Speed Ring to 45 laps. It's a fairly simple road course, and the lap times will be pretty quick, compared to a track like Laguna Seca.
I think doing away with the All-Star race is fine.
I would keep the Chase format. Having the Chase will allow new drivers to join later on in our regular season, yet still gives them a chance to qualify for the Chase and compete for the Championship. New drivers might be discouraged about joining a league where they are already trailing the points leader by 22 points without any hope for a late-season point reset.
I would also put your other prestige event, the Brickyard 200, in the Chase.
If I could make the schedule myself, here's how I would do it:
NC - Daytona Superspeedway - GTP Shootout (20 Laps) ~RACED~
01 - GTP Daytona 250 @ Daytona Superspeedway (100 laps) ~RACED~
02 - Indianapolis Superspeedway (50 laps)
03 - Monza - No Chicanes (40 laps)
04 - Daytona Superspeedway (50 Laps)
05 - Laguna Seca Raceway (25 Laps)
06 - Indianapolis Superspeedway (40 Laps)
07 - Daytona Road Course (30 Laps)
08 - Daytona Superspeedway (60 laps)
09 - Indianapolis Road Course (30 Laps)
10 - Indianapolis Superspeedway (60 Laps)
-------BEGIN CHASE-------
11 - High Speed Ring (45 Laps) A much more forgiving road course than Laguna Seca, especially as the lead-off event in the Chase.
12 - Daytona Superspeedway (40 laps)
13 - GTP Brickyard 200 - (80 Laps). Our 50% version of the Brickyard 400
14 - Suzuka East (40 laps)
15 - Daytona Superspeedway (75 laps)
This schedule has a good variety of tracks, distances, and never runs the same race track more than once in any consecutive three week period (except for the GTP Shootout and Daytona 250 in the first two weeks) and also never has two consecutive weeks with a road course.
For all the tracks, here are the distances we cover, in laps:
Daytona Oval - 100, 50, 60, 40, 75
Indy Oval - 50, 40, 60, 80
Daytona Road - 30
Indy Road - 30
High Speed Ring - 45
Monza (no chicanes) - 40
Laguna Seca - 25
Suzuka East - 40
