Bobby Hamilton Jr, Team Rensi form new team

Well I'll be damned

Earnhart-Ganassi Shut Down Nationwide team

Somehow I'm not surprised by this but I feel abit for Clauson and think he might get shoved out the door.

JGR expects Coleman to return in 09'

This'll be interesting. Personally, I'd like to see him in a full time ride with Kyle full time in the 18 so that no talented idiot Hamlin doesn't get to have a go

NASCAR stops Formula 1 test for Kyle Busch

This is pathetic and this was so he could accept a Sixth place award? Screw that! I'll take testing an F1 car anytime over accepting a pathetic 6th place award.

Say guys, remember D'hondt Motorsports, the team that raced the #92 Zippo Blu Toyota Kyle Busch drove at Watkins Glen? They are apparently going Full season Racing in ARCA with a driver named Alli Owens. Link here

I still question why he switched from Ford to Dodge this season.

Bobby Jr. is a pretty decent driver, and now that he has a team that can sustain itself in the long run, he can probably be in contention to win more often.

Hamlin's a good driver, and he can run just as well as Shrub, and he has a better attitude IMO.

Boo!

I believe it was part of a deal he had with GEM.

Why though?

He had done quite well in '07 running Fords and probably would've merged with Yates or Wood Bros. because he was running with or out ran those teams consistently last year.

ESPN
AJ Allmendinger is set to replace Elliott Sadler in the No. 19 Dodge in 2009, multiple Gillett Evernham Motorsports team sources told ESPN.com on Saturday.

GEM CEO Tom Reddin told team employees and sponsors the news just before Christmas, causing some sponsors to consider leaving, according to team sources.

Reached for comment Saturday, GEM spokesman Drew Brown chose not to comment.

Sources also said Ray Evernham, who founded the team and sold majority ownership to George Gillett, cleared out all personal possessions from the team's shop, including the 2002 Brickyard 400 trophy he won as owner of Bill Elliott's No. 9 Dodge.

Calls placed to Evernham and Sadler's representation were not immediately returned.

GEM announced earlier this month that it would scale back its Nationwide Series program next season by laying off about 65 employees and having the No. 9 Dodge run a partial schedule in the second-tier NASCAR series.

The team continues to field three Sprint Cup Series teams for Kasey Kahne, Reed Sorenson and now Allmendinger.

GEM lost sponsor Unilever to JR Motorsports at the end of the season and doesn't have enough sponsorship in place to run the full Nationwide schedule.

Allmendinger was released by Red Bull Racing late in the 2008 season.

It's good to see Allmendinger get a ride, he's proven himself to be good in a "trial by fire" manner. Yet at the same time I'm sad to see Sadler out of that ride, he ran OK this season, but bad luck seems to have plagued him again and didn't have the finishes to show for it.

I would like to see Allmendinger do something.I got to meet and talk to him back when he was in Champcar / Cart / whatever you wish to call it. Truly a well rounded human being,he deserves a fair shake at this.

The thing I tend to fall back on is that I think I remember when Casey Mears and Townsend Bell were open-wheelers trying to transition to NASCAR. Same for A.J. Allmendinger. I wish Allmendinger the best with his new ride. Ever think Allmendinger could become a NASCAR champion (doesn't have to be Cup) some day?

He is talented , I wish him the best in his transition to cup cars.

New Nationwide Series car on course for 2010 season
Economy issues may force sport to push debut back

Thanks, nissan tuner. I've actually wanted to try to find such pictures of the Nationwide CoT. I thought the rear wing on Cup CoT's is handsome while also looking more like a proper race car. The Nationwide CoT looks a lot like the classic stock car model, only a bit more boxy, yet still maintaining that general style.

Nice picture find.

restrictor plate or no restictor plate ????

IMO :

I say no restictor plate , reason being , if you un-restrict these cars , the field will branch out farther from each other , thus possibly avoiding a " big one ". Seriously here , you have 40 + cars all running nose to tail , the time between 1st place and last place is only 4 seconds or so at times, there is too much car clutter working there. Un-restrict them , they branch out , and if somebody slips up , or a car cuts a tire , it won't take out half of the field.

Now I see Nascars thoughts as well - they want to slow them down to a degree because they feel that the excessive speed would cause more harm to a driver in case of an accident. I don't know if I agree on this though , the way these cars are built , and the safety walls now-a-days , they can take a pretty darn good lick , and the driver walks away ( for the most part ).

Penske Racing PR
Verizon Wireless To Partner With Penske Racing NASCAR Team
January 19, 2009

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (January 19, 2009) - Penske Racing announced today that it will team with Verizon Wireless to field a full-season entry in the 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series. The No. 12 Verizon Wireless Dodge Charger will be driven by young standout Justin Allgaier, the 2008 ARCA RE/MAX Series champion. Allgaier made four Nationwide Series starts for Penske Racing in 2008 after joining the team in late September. The 22-year-old driver from Riverton, Illinois is looking to lead the team to a breakout season, beginning next month in Daytona.

Penske Racing will also continue its participation in the NASCAR Cup Series with the No. 12 Penske Dodge Charger driven by David Stremme. He will be joined by teammates Kurt Busch in the No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Charger and Sam Hornish Jr., driving the No. 77 Mobil 1 Dodge Charger in the three-car effort. Stremme, the 2003 Nationwide Series Rookie of the Year, also promises to be extremely competitive in the coming season in Cup Series competition. The No. 12 Cup Series team also retains Roy McCauley as its crew chief. The No. 12 Penske Dodge Charger will debut a new paint scheme in 2009, beginning with the Budweiser Shootout on Saturday, February 7.

"Penske Racing enjoyed a productive, winning relationship with Alltel over the last decade," said Roger Penske, Chairman of Penske Racing. "We look forward to building on that solid foundation and in sharing many future successes with our new partner, Verizon Wireless."

"Everyone at Verizon Wireless is very excited to join the Penske Racing team," said Mike Lanman, chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless. "Innovation, reliability and technology are the cornerstones of our business and we know our partners at Penske Racing value those same ideals. We can't wait for the start of the 2009 racing season."

Merger keeps Petty in team name

CONCORD, N.C. -- At the top of Richard Petty's list of deal-breakers when merger talks began between Petty Enterprises and Gillett Evernham Motorsports was to keep his name in the title of the company.

Meet Richard Petty Motorsports. Or "RPM," as some might call it.

The four-car Sprint Cup organization does not have any reference to majority owner George Gillett and keeps basically the same blue-and-red logo that symbolized Petty Enterprises for the past 60 years.

"We come out to let the world know we're still in the racing business and we're going to be bigger and better than we've ever been," Petty said Monday during an unveiling of the new logo on the first day of NASCAR's Media Tour.

Petty's list of demands also included keeping alive the famous No. 43 that he drove to seven Cup titles, as well as the No. 44 that was the second car at Petty Enterprises before Kyle Petty switched to the No. 45 in 2000 in memory of his son, Adam.

The No. 44 will replace the No. 10 as the fourth car that belonged to GEM. AJ Allmendinger, who is close to finalizing a multiyear deal, will drive in the first five races and is slated to run at least seven in the 44.

The Pettys reclaimed the No. 44 from Michael Waltrip Racing, which had it the past three seasons.

Team officials said the hope is to get Allmendinger sponsorship to run a full season -- if not this year, then next.

Petty also demanded that Budweiser, which sponsors Kasey Kahne's No. 9 car and had logos on the other GEM cars prior to the merger, not be on the 43 or 44 to uphold a family tradition of not being associated with alcohol-related sponsors.

"My mother would come back and haunt us home," Petty said of what would happen if Budweiser showed up on either car.

NASCAR's so-dubbed "King" also asked that Dale Inman, his crew chief for all seven titles, longtime public relations representative Brian Moffitt and vice president of race operations Robbie Loomis be guaranteed jobs with RPM.

He said having them as part of the deal gives him more power than he had after last year's merger with Boston Ventures, which has only a small percentage of RPM.

"Any kind of business ventures joining up or buying or selling, then you've got certain criteria that you've got to work around," Petty said. "[I told them] I ain't coming if my people ain't coming.

"If it's just me coming then I'm just an individual and I'm really on the outskirts. When I come and bring Robbie and Brian and Dale, then I've brought the nucleus of Richard Petty. Then I'm involved and they're involved, and what I can't find out they can find out."

But most important was keeping alive the Petty brand. Gillett, who did not change the name or signage of the Montreal Canadiens when he purchased the NHL team several years ago, had no problem with that.

"It was a great honor," said Gillett's son, Foster, who represented the family at the news conference. "We don't come to racing to see our name. We come to win. ... We would have erred greatly had we considered anything else.

"Gillett doesn't stand for much in the sport. We could try, and hopefully 50 years from now the Gillett name might mean something. At this point, we're going to do the best we can to help enhance Richard Petty Motorsports and do all that we can to help us win."

Not among Petty's demands was a place for his son in the company. He said 48-year-old Kyle "split from me" on the racing side the past couple of years when he stepped aside for several races to work as a television analyst for TNT.

But the elder Petty said there is no personal rift between him and his son.

"Maybe as we go along in this deal, maybe we'll be able to get him into a car to race for three or four races," he said. "As far as personal stuff, nothing has changed in the last 48 years."

Tom Reddin, the CEO of Petty Motorsports, said Petty will be an active member of the organization working with the drivers and being at the track most weekends. He said Ray Evernham, who sold majority interest in the organization to Gillett in 2007, would remain a consultant.

"We had a very good brand with Gillett Evernham Motorsports," Reddin said. "It was a respected brand in the industry. But the Petty brand, what is bigger than that?"

Petty believes the merger helps him and the Gilletts close the gap on top organizations, such as Hendrick Motorsports.

"We're the closest we've been since they started doing their thing," he said. "When they first came in we were at the top of the heap. Then we got to running even and then the first thing you know we fall off the hill and they take over.

"By us joining with George and stuff here, this puts us back in. [NASCAR has] four or five real top teams. We're the sixth one now. We're not the 15th or 20th team, which I was before joining up with George."

I don't think you've been on the first row at Daytona. I'll put it this way the "safety" there in place with unrestricted cars running 230-250 mph I would'nt even get in a airplane that went close to that track. Seriously it is a fence just like the wire fence at home depot with 3 thick cables anchored to the ground every hundred or so feet. the cars fit right through the cables, if one of those things spins at those speeds it will jump the fence. Plus it will take the fun out of restrictor plate racing.

After Comcast's recent rate hike, I am thinking about ditching their box and going all Internet. However, the only thing holding me back is NASCAR. I gots to have my NASCAR. Is there any solution for watching NASCAR online?

wrcsti: Your avatar made me smile. 👍

TVUPlayer broadcasts NASCAR usually, but I've seen them miss a cup-race or two, not to mention Nationwides and Trucks.

I hope Jimmie Johnson will be well after having some kind of problem with one of his fingers. You all know the #48 will be one to watch this season. He's the only one other than Cale Yearbrough to three successive titles. Whether or not he makes it four in a row depends on what the other 42 drivers want to do.

It isn't "Boogity, Boogity, Boogity!" on a new season of NASCAR yet, but tonight's the Budweiser Shootout. So it's going to be our first look at some of NASCAR Sprint Cup's stars heading into the new season. I just hope Jeff Gordon can get more wins this season than he had last season. Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards will be two others I'll lovingly try to follow this season. We're closing in on a new season. Time to get excited again once NASCAR blasts down the track to start a new season.

I'm hardly a NASCAR fan but I'm inexplicably excited for the race tonight.. maybe I'm just a fan of Daytona.

Wow, that was an epic crash avoidance driving by Jeff Gordon! Still not liking his new paint scheme though. Something about the yellow orange flames on a black car doesn't look as good as his more traditional orange flames on dark blue.

I dont recall hearing why, but the cars looked VERY twitchy and nervous. I dont recall a Daytona race where the cars were so bouncy. Have they changed the shock ,spring rules?

I've never seen them bounce around that much like that till tonight's race so I have no idea why they were acting like that. Could have been the no track testing rule that has messed everyone up.

Great racing and what a job by some of those guys to hold on to those things for as long as they did. Especially Matt Kenseth as one of them.

Congrats Harvick for another Daytona win. McMurray soo close.
